Specialties

Quite possibly the most delicious treats are the Shave It Our Way Combos; these are exquisite blends of flavas with a layer of ice cream on the bottom of the cup. We could live on classic Root Beer Floats (frosted rootbeer ice on vanilla ice cream) but you might like Arctic Cougar (frosted frap-​a-​chica ice on vanilla ice cream) or the X-​Factor (frosted French vanilla ice on Brazilian coffee ice cream). Hey, there are even fat-​free, sugar-​free versions!

History

Established in 2006.

Karen Bain and Lisa Kudirka, with a half-​dozen kids between them and a shared passion for shave ice, decided to make shave ice hip and trendy.

They started small at school fundraisers where their creations were such an overwhelming hit, that it encouraged them to «jump in» and «Go Big or Go Home».

Soon thereafter, the first Shave It store was launched in Southern California. Shave It was an immediate hit with lines out the door that continue to this day. «Going Big» not only meant launching one new concept, it meant two. The Shave It Mobile Ice Van debuted six months later, giving them the unique ability to drive to their customers.

Next on the list came the creation of a charitable foundation, Foster a Miracle, a never-​ending fundraising network that grants wishes to foster children with Shave It store revenue. Somehow knowing that a small portion of your Shave It will go to Foster a Miracle makes that Shave It melt your heart, while it melts in your mouth.

Bain is a former flight attendant who ran an interior design business for 11 years, and Kudirka has started and sold two businesses, a pest control company and more

recently a doll business that she sold to Toys «R» Us.

The women met through school events in 2004 after Kudirka returned from a trip to Hawaii. They got to talking about a shave-​ice treat they’d both had on the islands and couldn’t find in the states.

I’ve been getting shaved ice here for ten years. My daughter has been coming here for five! I’m not really a fan of the ice cream on top but I LOVE the ice. Especially after a hot day. Melona/​Pineapple is the best.

We recently went to Maui and had the most amazing shaved ice (of course it cost $ 8 for their size large, but well worth if for the seriously out-​of-​this-​world deliciousness!) So, fast forward to this past Monday afternoon. We were craving some shaved ice & I had some gift cards from Shaved It that I had forgotten I’d had. We trekked to TO, and ordered a large with two flavors (Tigers Blood & Blue Hawaiian), plus a scoop of chocolate ice cream. I have to say it tasted pretty close to the one we had in Maui! The person who prepped our order (Hillary) was extremely patient & kind when it turned out the gift card I had wasn’t working. Thank you, Hillary, for providing us a yummy reminder of our vacation in Maui!

Suzie Q is our favorite! Basically watermelon icy with vanilla bean ice cream. The small size is enough to feed two people so it’s so worth it! Although simple, quite a brilliant idea to combine icy and ice cream! The combination is excellent, creamy texture from the ice cream and icy texture from well… the icy! Creative dessert. There is a closer shave it located in Camarillo if you leave in Ventura. It’s right next to the 24 fitness there. Talk about rewarding yourself after the gym ;)

I’ve heard a lot about this place recently but had yet to try it until tonight. I could tell a long story about all the things that disappointed me from start to finish, but I’ll summarize:
— poor service (the two boys working had their eyes glued to their phones and barely looked up to greet me)
— misleading menu (if I call and ask if you serve banana splits, do not tell me yes, when in fact, you serve banana flavored ice)
— mediocre ice cream (calling it mediocre is being generous. I can only imagine my huge scoop of ice cream cost only $ 4 because the owners are trying to shovel the flavorless stuff out the door)
— mediocre shaved ice (my boyfriend actually threw out half his order because he could not finish it. And he is a human garbage disposal who is one of the least picky eaters I’ve ever met)
— trying too hard (the theme and the flavors and the décor are so over the top I couldn’t help but laugh when I realized it was two moms who opened the store. It’s like they listened to their sons talk and turned #ThousandOaksThug teenage boy lingo into a storefront)
Needless to say, I’ll be finding another place to satisfy my late night dessert cravings.

I’m so torn about this place. It’s yummy and refreshing but the service is pretty much always awful. Never enough people working. I mean I get it when there’s a random crowd on some random day but when it’s 100+ degrees outside on a weekend day, you would think a place that sells bowls of ice would have someone else come in to help out.

Been seeing this place every weekend I’m out, but the line has always been out the door. So, with temps here in triple digits today, we had to try it no matter the line! No line out the door, but what’s not seen is the line of 5 – 6 just inside the door, which is what it was today. We’re from Hawaii so take shaved ice seriously. It’s for sure a lot cleaner looking and feeling than the shaved ice hole-​in-​the-​walls back home, but the flavor and taste don’t measure up to the almost brilliant and strong tastes on the North Shore or Kapahulu snow cones in flimsy paper with an even smaller scoop of plain vanilla ice cream. Service was an average wait, with the single service line taking in bursts of 4 – 5 at a time. Had the Fancy Pants, banana and pineapple shaved ice on coconut ice cream, and a special Rainbro, banana and cherry and blue vanilla with vanilla ice cream. Both were great!
All in all, this is the best way to beat the heat, and you might even get an ice cream headache. As good as the shaved ice is back home in Honolulu, it’s a great deal right here. I’m seeing that some of the reviewers think the prices are high, but it’s less than a Baskin-​Robbin single scoop and as refreshing or better on a hot day like today. And for those who are bummed that anyone can charge so much for frozen water, I hope you go for the large size, which is twice the size for fifty cents more. I did and it’s worth every ice chip.

So as a UCLA student, I’m often at Diddy Reese, which basically is three times cheaper than Shave It yet just as good.
So whenever I come here, I’m more likely to make comparisons rather than just appreciate.
Anyway, simply speaking on today’s visit, they were slow to take my order due to computer difficulties and had a line building up. Other than that, I did enjoy my Shave It (Vanilla ice cream w/​Cotton Candy flavor).

Been coming here reluctantly for about a year, I have a daughter so sometimes we make sacrifices. Every time we have come here, the service is generally pretty good, but the prices are OUTRAGEOUS. Ok. They are selling ice, but yet it costs about 6 dollars for a large cup of ice with one scoop of ice cream. The scoop is small. Let that soak in. Six dollars. That isn’t including if you get «frost» or extra flavor, which you may have to do because it’s very lightly flavored, most of the time. Only in Thousand Oaks, and surrounding areas can a business be profitable overcharging for ice. It’s actually hilarious. How much ice cream can you buy for 6 dollars anywhere else? Might want to step into a grocery store, not send your maid or nanny, but go yourself and look at some labels. Find out info about the real world we live in, discover real world prices.
They have messed up our order of ICE, countless times and issued us some «free order» coupons. So we go in and order a large ice cream, not ice, and its a large cup with one scoop of ice cream. HA! So smart, never would have caught onto that quick move.
Another, quick hilarious story about ice. My girlfriend went in there on a separate occasion, and ordered a Large ice cream without coupons, and they charged her 18 dollars. I guess they are a little more careless when you aren’t using a free coupon. She noticed the mistake after walking to the car, then turned around to ask what that was about. OOOOPSSS, so sorry. I wonder how many times a mistake like that happens?
If you are in North County SD, please check out how much shaved ice is at some other places.

. The «big Kahuna» size here is about the size of a gardening hat, the same amount at Shave It, would probably be 30 dollars. I’m positive it’s demographic, but please don’t contribute to the problem of wealth vs brains.

Love shaved ice, mix with some ice cream with tons of different flavors. Their coconut ice cream is bomb, and the actual shaved ice is decent. I must say one thing they’re definitely missing is some azuki red beans.
The reason I gave this place 2 stars is due to their cleanliness, or should I say lack of. I’ve been at this location a few times and everytime I’ve been there tables are always dirty, dried syrup, used caps, used napkins all over the place. One time trash cans were all full, so people are just stacking their used containers on top of the counter, there was a pile of what looked like a whole cup spilled on the floor. It was left there not cleaned up the whole time I was there. This place is disgusting.
If they actually keep it clean and maintain it, I’d consider coming back. But for now, they’ve lost my business.

My summer favorite
Best way to beat the heat, is a quick pitstop at shave it. They have a wide variety of flavors in both organic and regular. They also serve ice cream.
They have in house specials too which appear to be very inviting. I however chose to stick to a refreshing organic watermelon shave ice.

Apparently this is a hot spot in the neighborhood, offering Hawaiian style shaved ice on top of ice cream. Its reputation was proven by how poppin it was even though we went there late at night.
For me it was just okay, I would never imagine myself craving it. Perhaps it gets addicting with more visits? I got the tropical swell combo and while it was pretty good while I was eating it, I actually felt pretty guilty afterwards lol. Perhaps I’m more of a froyo kinda gal because mentally I wanna think that I’m eating more healthy.
Overall, pretty decent dessert if options are running scarce. Unique, as I’ve never had shaved ice and ice cream mixed together, but I kinda wish they had healthier options maybe like froyo rather than ice cream :)

I have came to this shave it location twice now and the first time I came I loved it! Great service and the ice was finely shaved. The second time I came here service was slow, and my shave it ice/​ice cream had chunks in it of ice that wasn’t finely ground. The syrup had seeped to the bottom and overall I was not happy with my service. Will I come back here? I’m not sure.

(+/​-​) Not their fault but the line was soooo long. It was a scorching hot day at the park so this was the perfect time for shaved ice and everyone had the same idea.
(-) Only 4 or 5 flavors available… Root Beer, Blueberry, Cherry and Banana? Might’ve been one more I can’t remember. When we finally got to order I guess I didn’t mind what I got as long as the ice was cold and that it wasn’t banana.
(+) Cherry was pretty good, not too cough syrupy but very sweet. Root beer was fine, tasted like root beer. Cooled off, mission accomplished.
(+/​-​) I’m sure the brick-​and-​mortar location is a lot better with more flavors and options like adding ice cream… still tough to find anything that compares to the portions and quality I’ve found in Hawaii.

I just love Shave it and I’m ALWAYS in there. I have to say, THANK YOU MADELINE for making the visits to Shave It, hands down the most pleasurable and pleasant. Madeline makes the BEST Shaved ice, and is SOOOOOO professional. The owners should feel comfortable knowing a worker like Madeline, is on their team. Every time I go there and she is working, I know, I’ll be getting the very best service. She handles herself, the customers and the establishment, like she really cares!!! I’ve seen this girl under pressure handle herself better than the adults in there at times, and it gets crazy sometimes… The store is great and I can’t say enough about Madeline. I wish I had a business, just so I could offer her a job! Thank you for being a real sweetheart.

Got a large twix! It was amazing. I love this Shave it. It’s so big. If it was in Oxnard i’d be there everyday! It has a great vibe and great music. Today it wasn’t packed at all. I’ve never seen twix at the one in Camarillo but ugh I was so tempted to get more. The cashier was nice (: overall great experience and in love with twix if I haven’t emphasized enough on that haha.

Happened to be in the neighborhood craving a frozen treat. Got the tropical swell and was super happy!!! The island macadamia nut ice cream was amazing.
The menu is totally overwhelming and all the expert level combinations made for too many options. I stuck with my typical snow cone flavor profile. Passion fruit, guava, mango.
The girl gave us a sample of peanut butter ice cream by request. It was also very unique and tasty.
