Unilocal considers 3 stars to be A-OK…that’s a generous rating… I really, really want to love this place… but at best, its inconsistent and at worst, it is mediocre. My rating is just for sandwiches… of which I’ve eaten 3 or 4 different ones and have bought about ½ dozen sandwiches over the past 2 months… I had one amazing sandwich there but went back for the same sandwich the next day and it was just eh… bread is inconsistent. Don’t mind paying $ 11 for a sandwich but it better be worth it as there are plenty of cheaper alternatives that are also mediocre…

A couple regulars took me here for some subs, and I ordered a speck with mozzarella. Normally, I’m all about a lot of meat on my sub, but when it comes to speck, prosciutto, pepperoni, and the like, I only want a thin layer, which I thought was the norm. This place had at least a quarter inch of shaved speck on my sub. In the future, I will order turkey or roast beef, as I have no problem with a thick layer of any of the less seasoned meats. They had an excellent selections of meats, salads, ready cooked dishes, etc… at price below Italian restaurants.

If you know the staff here you are all set. If not. Dont bother. Went in to buy some steaks and sausages and there were 4 employees behind the counter and one customer being served. I waited patiently and made eye contact with eveyone in the store until another customer walked in who was then immediately served. Gotta be a butcher around here who wants my business… Obviously not this one.

The best! Great and especially helpful staff. Selection and quality is outstanding. I’ve never been disappointed when shopping here and greatly appreciate customer service so utterly lacking in the large grocery stores here. I come from the land of Wegman’s and allow me just say that I miss that store more than I can express!!! A&S never disappoints.

I’ve been here twice so far and know I’ll be back many more times. I went in to get a sandwich for lunch both times, but was drooling over the meat case. The sandwiches are a little pricey(typically $ 10 – 11 for a hero, but you can get 2 meals out of it, or I did anyway). The first time, I got a sandwich with prosciutto and fresh mozz, and today I tried a different one, with prosciutto, sopressata, mortadella, provolone, and roasted peppers. Both sandwiches were really good, but I wish they had been packed with a little more meat considering the price. They use Boars Head cold cuts, which I like. Today I caved and got a package of Italian cookies. I want to try some of their sausages and fresh mozz, at least to start-not to mention the steaks and prepared foods. They sell Italian products as well(hello, 5 kg jar of Nutella!). The men are friendly and funny, and I love trading sarcasm with them. This is a great little shop.

Talk about an authentic New York Italian deli experience. From the guys working behind the counter to the meats hanging in the window, this place is like a trip to Arthur ave. The mozzarella is homemade and delicious. The deli sandwiches are generous and filling, especially wedges. And they’re always happy to give you samples if you ask. I’ve never purchased the meat in the case but the quality looks good if you enjoy Italian sausage and such. Bulk olive oil and other hard to find imported Italian goods for sale here. Panetones abound!

This is one of my favorite places. I will go in to purchase a hero(usually chicken cutlet with mozzarella) and recently bought a whole turkey breast for the holidays. There fresh mozzarella is the absolute best of any I have ever purchased including Arthur Avenue. It ain’t cheap but it is fantastic. Top quality throughout the store.

Please read this because I used to love this place ! I’ve lived in Mt. Pleasant for 22 years. Since I was a loyal A&S Yonkers(Tony) customer since I was a kid shopping with my mom, I was thrilled to see brother Angelo here when we moved to town. I never had an issue with anything there. Food and service always excellent. enough that you didn’t mind the high prices. I was always one on those nuts outside an hr before they opened Christmas Eve. Then Angelo sells… and things changed. New owner, Anthony, does not practice basic«good business». Last summer, I placed an order for meat for a party. The meat was tough, poor quality. I was shocked ! No one could chew it and it put a real damper on the party. Even with Anthony’s attitude the food is still good so i figured it was just tough meet and was an isolated thing. I spoke to the owner. first he didn’t believe me, then I open foil wrapped leftovers to show him. There were people, around me so he said the next time I had company, order it again and it will be no charge. Two weeks later I ordered the exact same pinwheels directly from Anthony, reminding him of the credit. I sent the hubby that Sunday morning to pick it up. they charged him !!(yes, I was pissed he paid. That’s another story). I phoned the store immediately, Anthony told me he «doesn’t give food away«. I thought I misunderstood so I asked him to repeat it. He repeated the same. This person who knows me as a weekly customer for years, who have used them to cater numerous parties was totally irrational. I told him that he SAW the meat, it was unchewable… He gave me a credit !! He said«you cooked it wrong». I felt like I got slapped. His last words to me is what I want people to know. «I don’t need you, I got lots of people in this town throwing money at me «. And he hung up. Now I utilized a few of the Italian deli in the area. and if I want something special, I head to my friend Tony, at A&S in Yonkers. There they value and respect customers. Some will look at this and say«well it was a one time thing» …yes but it was handled poorly. If it can happen to me… ITCANHAPPENTOYOU. Not replacing my $ 100 meat order cost him my business and my respect.

I’m from Brooklyn and I moved to this neighborhood a couple years ago. One thing I truly miss from home is the food. I wandered into this little deli by accident, can’t believe I didn’t know about it for so long! Finally a place to get some yummy fresh olives, nice oil/vinegar selection and other yummy treats. Although they carry a lot of meat they were very friendly and enthusiastic about helping to find me some yummy vegetarian treats to buy. This is why I am giving them 5 stars — they have authentic, fresh, delicious food but they are also very helpful to the customer! The red pepper spread was especially tasty. My only complaint is that(like many businesses in the area) They close pretty early so it is hard for me to stop by after work.

This is hands down the best deli there is. I have become a weekly visitor here. It doesn’t matter if your looking for a sandwhich, a prepared dinner, or the finest quality raw meats you can get it all here. The problem is never leaving without what you need its leaving with way more than you planned on. I walk in here and start salivating. They have constantly changing freshly prepared dishes on display that are always delicious. Lately one of my favorites has been the Bean and Escerole. There sandwhiches beat any where else. The meats are outrageous, you cant find steaks any where else with this quality. I often come here to make antipasta plates because there olives, breads, meats, are all of the most outrageous flavors. Not to mention that the men behind the counter are beyond helpful and friendly. You cant leave without a friendly conversation. And they are not short of reccomendations for you, which more often than not gets me in trouble buying more than I need!

The food at A&S is fresh and delicious. The owner, Anthony aims to please and is wonderfully helpful and accommodating. The basics like homemade pasta are always great but there are also new offerings that provide just the right variety. The fresh mozzarella is better than any I have ever eaten… including Arthur avenue, little Italy and yes Rome, Florence, Venice too! There are other versions of A&S but none compare to the Thornwood store. We are truly fortunate to have them in our backyard!!!

By far the best Italian deli I have been to. When you walk through the doors you are taken back by the aroma of the fresh hot food that was made that day which immediately sparks your appetite. To list the amount of food A&S serves up on this post would take up too much space as they pack more food into the deli than one could imagine. No matter where you look, there is food. Sausages and cheeses hanging from the ceilings, hot food atop the counters and fresh meats and chops in the glass cases. I can go on all day about A&S but words will do them no justice. It is a place you really need to experience to appreciate. Go there hungry!

When the guy behind the deli counter knows what you want before you can even finish the order, and not because he’s ever seen you before in his life, you know you’ve stumbled upon a gem. We went to A & S because the deli we were originally aiming for was closed, and I needed a prosciutto sandwich.(Yes, yes, I said«needed.» Don’t mock me.) The guy behind the counter made me a ridiculously good concoction made of thin-sliced prosciutto, roasted red pepper, thick-sliced Mozz, and pesto sauce. Perfect. Also, he called me «young lady.» Three times. They were busy at an off-hour on a sunny Saturday afternoon, but they were impeccably polite and efficient. Their meat case was an absolute glory: home made sausages and house-cured meats filled it, and it wasn’t until I wandered back to look for chips to go with my ‘wich that I noticed the glass-walled station in the back where they slice, cure and otherwise prepare their meat, and make up the various other sides and entrees that go with a good meal. In the refrigerated case opposite the counter you’ll find drinks and home made soups and fresh pasta. Lovely. This place is an absolute find, and quite reasonably priced for the quality. Our two sandwiches and bottled drinks came to $ 17.

I am amazed no one has reviewed this place yet! A&S is a family owned business and is one of the best deli’s i have ever been to – growing up my family placed a HUGE emphasis on high quality fresh foods and this is one of the very few places my father will go to get meats and other supplies — this says A LOT considering he used to be a Chef and ventures weekly to the city to buy most of his stuff. A&S has a huge selection of basic cold cuts, delicious homemade sides(their marinated Boccaccini’s are a MUST have) and any type of meat you desire — steak, poultry and pork. They also have a small selection of local produce and even sell their homemade sauces(vodka, bolognese, marinara, etc.) and pastas. They do not skimp out on quality which unfortunately means most of their prices are pretty steep. If you can’t afford to frequent A&S, it is at least a great place to treat yourself every once and a while; places exemplifying this level of quality are a dying breed One last thing — visiting during peak times(lunch hours mostly) will probably involve waiting on a super long line. The line does move pretty fast, but as with most things, if you can avoid it – avoid it.
