Scottsdale Gateway Apartments

Blinded by their cheap rent and personable leasing staff (shout out to Commander — he’s the man), I gave Scottsdale Gateway the benefit of the doubt when signing a 12 month contract with the property in February. One month later, my two bedroom apartment has been broken into and robbed with claims surpassing $ 10,000 between my roommate and myself. And conveniently enough Scottsdale Gateway failed to mention when I signed the lease that their renters insurance does not cover personal property. Yikes. Anyhow, I asked the new manager about any previous criminal activity on the premises as well as the unit specifically and she assured me it had never happened within the Scottsdale Gateway community before. However, upon visiting
it was quite easy to find multiple police reports within even the past year that have happened on the grounds of Scottsdale Gateway. Some happening as close as a .01 mile radius of my apartment. See below:

Note these are all burglaries close in proximity and comparable to the recent violation of my own «home», and all occurring within the past 12 months. The other reports of crime throughout the past year that took place on the Scottsdale Gateway property are equally worrisome:

I understand that such reports are not attractive to present to perspective tenants. However, I would expect the Scottsdale Gateway management to be a) aware and b) honest about the recent activity on their grounds upon request, especially with it being public information.
In other words: Do not move here. It is not safe. It is not well managed. And it is infested with cats. Gross.
Oh, and for when Scottsdale Gateway comments on this — we have already attempted to handle this privately. Let. Us. Move. Out… Please.

I’ve lived here for a year now and decided to renew. I think its a great deal for a student. The location is great! The ASU campus is close as well as Old Town. I’ve had no issues. I read some reviews that people don’t feel safe. I’m not sure what they mean, I’ve come home at all hours of the night and never felt unsafe. I’ve also never had an issue with the office staff. I’ve lived in many apartments and have never even known the names of the office staff. I love the staff here! So if you are looking for a good location at a good price, this is a great place to consider.

Run as fast and as far away as possible from this place, and any other complex managed by Greystar, seriously.
Renting an apartment here was the worst mistake of my life.
Once you move out and have given them your final check, they will «lose» this check (I personally know another renter this has happened to). Then they will harass you for the money, fine I understand, it’s a bill that needs to be paid but you’re the one that lost the check, don’t harass me. So we pay it, have a receipt for it and everything we make sure to ask if this is the FINAL balance of everything, we are told yes it is. Get a call 4 months later «you need to pay the balance or we will send you to collections» UM WHAT?! This has already been paid!
This company is a scam, i swear I am going to be called every 4 – 6 months for the rest of my life saying that I owe them some bullshit that I don’t actually owe them.
YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED! DON’T RENT HERE.

Not sure why all the negative reviews are here but I can’t know everybody’s experience. Mine was quite pleasant. I lived here for 14 months and never had issues with the apartment or the faculty. The faculty is quite pleasant to deal with, and there is a lot of them so you can always get what you need done. The only negative side to living here was a neighbor I had who nobody got along with, but he was gone in a few months anyways. Please ignore reviews that complain about things that the complex cannot control themselves. This is not a neighbor review site, but rather a review for the complex itself. The apartments are nice, a bit small but nice nonetheless. The amenities are really nice (pools, gym, washers, dryers, landscaping, bug control, etc.) Overall I would continue to live here had I not needed to move for personal reasons.
UPDATE: there is a lot of complaining about security deposits not returned. They called me and personally asked if I had received it, turned out I gave them the wrong forwarding address. They actually called me to make sure they could return my money. My guess is that people who reviewed about their deposits not getting returned are butt hurt for trashing their apartment and not get refunded. Its not that hard, clean the apartment, get your money back.

This is by far THE WORST APARTMENT COMPLEX I HAVE EVER LIVED IN. I would give this place no stars if I could. Management is horrible here, if there is any. Very unprofessional office employees who don’t care at all about your mail (they’ve lost mine on several occasions) or even to pick up the phone. Apparently there isn’t an office manager, ever. Paying rent is apparently the most complicated thing ever, seeing how you can’t pay online with using moneygram? Don’t worry there’s a fee for that too. You can also forget about living in a nice complex because the grounds are not updated or even managed. Overpriced rent with a bunch of «fees» that go along with it. Trash and cats everywhere, Literally. But don’t worry again you’ll be charged $ 15 every month to keep the parking lot clean. The only good reviews coming out of here are from the incompetent staff who can’t pick up a phone. If you want an apartment complex who actually cares…

I give this place 1 star just because they do not have a no star selection. I have lived here for 4 years with every possible issue know to man. From incompetent office staff to poor maintenance this place needs serious changes. They have been trying to fix the hot water for two years know. Every summer you wake up to no hot water (staff please use other excuse, this one is getting old). No hot water at 4 a.m. is plain unacceptable. Maybe you want to hire staff that knows how to perform maintenance. Maybe the owners want to spend some of the high priced rent money and repair this place or just demolish it and start from scratch.
The ONLY bright side to the complex R Daisy and Dave. They are the only bright and intelligent staff here. Maybe promote the two individuals and you just might have satisfied residents.
HAPPY MOTHERS DAY to the moms that have hot water today.

Avoid this place!
The management is horrible, they are completely impossible to deal with… If you can even get them to return a phone call! Security is also an issue, there are a lot of homeless people in the area which made my female roommate very uncomfortable at night. Their «invigorating spa» seemed to be out of order more often than not, when it was working there was just one jet in the corner that actually works. They claimed to have a heated pool when we first took a tour, they do not. Save yourself the headache and look elsewhere.

I leased a studio for here for 5 months while my house was under renovation. It was essentially a storage unit with a shower. It was cheap and conveniently located just up the street from my work. Over 5 months, my dog and I spent the night 3 times. I never once turned on the stove or dishwater, and only kept water in the refrigerator. I never touched the thermostat. Over the last 3 months, I only went by on the 1^st to pay rent and grab a load boxes to bring back to the house. My walk thru was scheduled on Monday, March 2^nd although my lease didn’t technically end until the 5^th. On Sunday, we went to clear out the remaining boxes, sweep, and wipe everything down. When we arrived the door was unlocked and the apartment had been ransacked. All of the boxes were ripped open and disheveled. Sadly, the last of the boxes were full of things from my childhood, and some family things. Nothing of any real value, and to be honest I couldn’t really tell if anything was missing. I hadn’t gone thru some of them myself in years. So we decided against calling the police. I did however go down to the office to report it. After having me write down what happened, they told me that TWO of my neighbors had actually called to report hearing activity in the apartment over the weekend. Several of the office personnel knew my situation and that I wasn’t living in the apartment, including the guy I was reporting to. I asked him why he didn’t give me a f-​ing courtesy call and he said «he didn’t want to bug me». I took him back to the apartment and showed him that there were no signs of forced entry and implied that it was someone with access to a key. He was like «that’s weird, because there are only 2 keys: the 1 you have, and the 1 in the office.» Did I mention that the office personnel knew of my living situation? The following day, Monday, I return to do my walk-​thru and turn in my keys. I sat there with my check book and ASKED if I owed anything for those few days into March. I was told NO, any remaining utilities would be deducted from my security deposit which I would receive by mail within 14 days. Fast forward about 6 weeks later, after being redirected and redirected and several unreturned voicemails, I finally got ahold of someone at their office in Seattle. According to him, BOTH my email and forwarding address were incorrect in their records. Long story short, he ended up emailing me a breakdown of where my $ 450 security deposit was going and that I in fact owe them $ 17. Among the deductions were prorated rent thru the 5^th (even though they scheduled my walk-​thru and took my keys on the 2^nd), a $ 50 LATE FEE for not paying said rent on time, a cleaning fee (IF warranted, one would think should be taken out of the $ 200 nonrefundable deposit), the last month’s utilities (fair), and «final» utilities which were 3X the cost of the monthly. We tried tirelessly to fight every line of it, ended up getting redirected to the voicemail of a supervisor up in Seattle, and now it’s May and I still haven’t heard back, let alone seen a penny. At this point I’m just checking my mail everyday for that bill for $ 17 which I imagine I’ll indefinitely end up having to pay so this doesn’t end up in collections and destroying my credit. Such. A. Nightmare. Stay away. They are crooks and clearly in the business of scamming deposits. I wish I would have checked Unilocal beforehand, because I’m clearly not the 1^st person they’ve done this to. Don’t be the next.

If you want mediocracy, then live here!
This place has everything you’re looking for in apartment complex living.
An incompetent staff
Residents who steal (like the guy whole stole my iPhone from the gated pool area)
A stupid system, and stupid leasing agreement.
You’ll be stuck here, and overcharged for all these lovely attributes that make a place feel like home.
My advice, pay a little extra for somewhere actually worth it. Don’t affiliate with them or their sister residences.

Lived here for a year and saw so many break ins. delt with a creepy security guard who would follow me to my house and I hated him knowing where I lived. When I talked to the office about it, they took no action and made excuses for him. I have never made contact with the security guard but felt he was always watching. Super uncomfortable.
Secondly things here are always getting broken into. Multiple cars were stolen when I lived there. Security does not do their job so don’t rely on them. Further more if you have an emergency security is a third party so you have to get transfered a whole bunch of times or leave a msg. So safe if someone is breaking into my house. I’ll just «leave a msg»

Lastly the office staff besides the commander I believe his name is. The whole move out process was a DISASTAR first of all I did the walk through with the property manager. He said there shouldn’t be any charges. A week later I get the bill with of course deductions from my security deposit
So begins the long process of dealing with management rude management I submitted receipts which they say are fake now great… Wish me luck Unilocalers!

I’ve lived here for 6 months now. I have sewer roaches in my apartment and have been dealing with them since I moved in. The exterminator comes and sprays but still they keep coming. Because they barely take care of it. I found 17 roaches in my apartment in one day. And they are NOT babies. When they needed to take more extreme measures they offered to bug bomb my apartment which required me to take everything out of my cabinets, closets, pantries etc… with nowhere to put all of those items. I was not able to get a bug bomb. And for the last 6 months I find usually 1 – 3 roaches a week at the very least.

I have been living here about 7 months now and I love it! I live in one of the medium sized one bedroom apartments with a beautiful, spacious backyard. The surrounding complex is very pretty and I enjoy walking through it in the morning. My cat and I know we have it good here. The laundry facilities are superb, especially now that locks have been added, the fitness center is open 24 hours (good for me since I’m nocturnal), and there is a security guard around at night to keep things relatively safe.
There are occasionally shady people who don’t even seem to live here walking around, but they are few and far between. Just don’t invite them in.

So in working with the district office I was able to recover my full security deposit, but it took a lot more effort than it should have. I hope in the future they follow the laws and make this process much more transparent and painless.

DO NOT LIVE HERE!!! As you can see from the last reviewer, a new management company (Riverstone) took over the complex. Because of this, we were unable to read any accurate reviews when researching prior to move-​in and decided to roll the dice. BIG MISTAKE.
First, we were given inaccurate information by Christine when we asked for itemized costs of living here on our tour. She also told us that our unit would be «just like» the tour unit. On the day we went to sign our lease and move in, additional costs were piled on in our lease (almost $ 50 per month over the numbers she had given us), and the huge storage closet that we had seen on our first-​floor unit tour was entirely taken up by a ventilation system on the second floor, so the storage we had counted on was gone! We had out stuff packed up and out of the former apartment and had no choice but to move forward with the move-​in.
When it came time to move out, we rented a steamer for the carpets and deep cleaned the whole apartment, to make it move-​in ready. We then received a bill stating that they were keeping our security deposit and charging us an extra $ 150 dollars for «deep cleaning.» It seemed that they had taken advantage of the fact that our out-​of-​state move made it impossible for us to be there for the walk-​through. I couldn’t even get a call back to discuss the charges! Every other apartment I have lived in expects to pay for normal wear and tear after a tenant moves out, but even though we had patched and repainted all holes and steamed the carpets, they wanted even more money, stating that it «wasn’t their responsibility» to make our apartment ready for the next tenant. It was another example of apartments near campus taking advantage of young renters.

I have to be honest, when I first moved it, it seemed amazing… but isn’t it always when you first move in?! Let me begin with I was given the information incorrectly and very fast. But, they are salesmen, so who was I kidding.
First of all, they told me I had the OPTION of paying the utilities on my own or through a bundle package, that ranges from «$ 30−70» a month, what a steal right? Since I’m in one of the studio’s, I figured I’d be on the low aspect, around $ 40…NOPE, just got my bill and it was $ 70. Let me remind you my apartment is the size of a shoe box (but I’ll get to that later). When I called about that, she said «OH NO THAT’S NOT CORRECT, NOT SURE WHY SHE TOLD YOU THAT» YEAHHHHH ME EITHER!!! If I would of known that, I would of rethought my decision, except now I can’t because I was told the wrong information, POOR MANAGEMENT. Anyone considering moving in, please make sure you get a second opinion on the utility bills lol, because clearly the staff isn’t on the same page.
Also, your whole entire lease will have the monthly rent, BUT you won’t know until your first bill that they tack on 2%!!! It raised my rent by $ 40 soooo that also would of been a red flag to maybe not move-​in.
OHHHH and must I remind you that EVERY complex get’s charged a $ 15 fee for upkeep of the apartments, which is RIDICULOUS! I mean it’s kept decently, but can you imagine what $ 15 times ALL these apartments are, UMMMM more than what they pay the lawn mowers for BARELY ANY GRASS and who the random people to clean up trash, RIDICULOUS! That pisses me off the most I think.
It keeps going though, then we HAVE TO, don’t have a choice, to pay «renter’s insurance every month». In case something happens to our apartment, insurance will need to cover it, UMMM cant they just buy insurance for the property that covers it, ISN’T THAT WHAT OVER COMPLEXES DO? I think they are taking some of the profit, because at you notice, it’s paid with your rent, not to the company. TRICKY TRICKY, not so much.
Okay and THEN, yeah I’m NOT DONE!!! I’ve heard reviewers say that the plus is that it’s quiet because of the concrete walls, HMMM not so much. Oh my walls are QUIET, but it’s my ceiling that I can hear EVERYTHING! I can hear the guy’s phone vibrate, and I DOUBT it’s on the floor, it’s absolutely horrible! If you’re going to make concrete walls for the noise, put it in the goddamn ceiling too! And yes the concrete walls are quiet, BUT for all the women or the guys who like to hang things… YOU CAN’T HANG ANYTHING. You definitely can’t put a nail in, and when I called them about that, they said use the sticky things, hmm maybe for a .5lb picture, but what about my metal art!!! I hung that with stickies, the strongest ones they had, and all fell within 2 – 5 minutes! You got to be kidding me! So on top of everything else, I CAN’T HANG ANYTHING? I’M A GIRL, COME ON! Sooo I then asked if I can drill, because lets be honest, what are my options? And they said no, okay so now I’m going to look at this overly expensive, supposed to be quite blank ass apartment for a year, GREAT!
The two things I do like are the pool and gym. The Laundry room isn’t bad, but if you do your laundry on the weekend (which most people do) they are mostly full and busy.
Also, if you move out early for your lease, it’s 2 times your rent, hmm cheap, NOT! Oh and instead of at the end of your lease, letting them know the month before, you have to let them know 3 months before! Okay because anyone really knows that early. You can’t get another apartment, and be like, but I can’t move in for 3 months! So ridiculous.
I know I seem mad, but wouldn’t you? I’m just trying to make it, and being tricked into little stupid charges makes life real difficult, this will be the last time I go into an apartment complex, next will be just from a landlord.

As other reviewers have noted, the management is generally incompetent. When you have to deal with them it’s quite a headache. However, new management recently took over and I can only hope they are better.
I never received my deposit back or a bill for damages when I moved out. I never questioned it because I thought I would have to owe money because of the pet stains on the carpet and uncleaned oven. It is, however, a violation of state law to not provide a tenant with an itemized receipt of the deposit upon move out. I’m not complaining though, I lived there 2 years and I think my deposit was only a few hundred dollars.
Overall, the complex is nice. I liked living there and I loved the interior of my apartment. It’s very quiet and with the solid concrete walls you hardly hear your neighbors at all. The location is convenient to Scottsdale and ASU. The biggest complaint I have, besides the management, was the fact that there was always dog poop all over my area of the complex. It was pretty gross and I complained to management about it twice. It’s not their fault that there were irresponsible pet owners, however.
The rent got to be too expensive for me to afford on my own, and they raised it every year. I would recommend the complex but I would also advise to shop around and see if you can find something more reasonably priced.

I decided to change me previous review of this Apartment complex mainly because of my experience with their new management team. Ericka N. and L.C. both have great points. The air conditioning sucks, and more importantly, my utilities also went up under the new management.
I’m not one to ever write a negative review, but with my moving out experience from this apartment, they’ve forced my hand. In previous rental experiences, most properties treat you fairly and courteous during the move out process. Not at Scottsdale Gateway. I’m not going to go into how moving out requires a two months notice before you vacate, or how breaking the lease is akin to half a years worth of rent. I’m going to go directly to their poor treatment of those moving out.
1^st: The new management doesn’t know the name of the paint color used on their property. And said paint color is only obtainable at the nearby Sherman Williams in sizes no smaller than a gallon. COST $ 20. Ok. That’s not too bad! But, the old management used to provide you with some paint with a little notice.
2^nd: Inspection. I made an appointment for a final walk through almost a month ago. They will only allow an appointment with a FOUR HOUR window. Either 9-​Noon or 1−5pm. I’m sure this is easy to keep with anyone’s schedule: sarcasm: On the day of the appointment I confirmed it with them in person before 9am, then went to wait in my empty apartment. Till 12:15. Then I had to go remind them that they missed their small four hour window. COST: 4 Hours I could have been at work or $ 80.
3^rd: Carpets and Pets. Under the new management they require you to arrange for a «proffesional» carpet cleaning yourself before you move out. Ok. Fine. Done. COST $ 90. OOPS they forgot to tell me that since I had a pet, that they’ll also charge me $ 175 dollars if their «carpet guy» thinks the carpet needs to get «pet treated.» Umm but I just got it proffesionally cleaned and I have the reciept. Too bad. I’m at the whim of their redundant «carpet guy.» What about the $ 200 pet deposit I payed that was supposed to cover such costs according to the last management group? Too bad. Non refundable. What about the fact that our pet was a short haired cat that left virtually no hair? Too bad. COST: $ 465
There’s a ton of other problems that have gotten to me about my move out experience, but these are the ones bothering me the most.
Total cost of moving out? $ 565 Dollars. So glad I have that security deposit! Oh… You’re taking that to cover the cost of utilities that L.C. Brought up? Ok. Thanks for the kindness.
Don’t move into this place unless you want to develop stockholm syndrome and still throw money at them after you’ve left.

HORRIBLE PLACE TO LIVE! I would give a zero star if possible.
Worst management ever!!! Cars and apartments being broken into. People letting their dogs run free off of leashes in front of management and nothing being done. A/​C not always working or breaking constantly. The management tries to sneak in extra fees and changing words in the lease. We never received a copy of our lease. It took awhile for us to actually get it. We asked for our lease today and it took them half an hour to find it. We can only get Cox Internet which is expensive. They left my us homeless for a week because the day before we were going to move in, they told us it would be another week for the apartment to get ready. We had to stay in a hotel for that week and they did not pay or help out with the costs.
Bottom line: don’t stay here, all they care about is money and they could and do care less about you.

Pros:
1. The apartments themselves are pretty nice for the area and have HUGE patios! Like large enough for me to have a small veggie garden and still enough room for my two large dogs to play in real dirt. This was definitely the selling point for us.
2. The ceilings and walls are concrete so I don’t have to hear all the college parties going on upstairs and they can’t here me:)
3. Lots of parking, both covered and uncovered, very close to my apartment.
4. I’ve thankfully only had to place one maintenance request but they were quick about it. They came the next day and fixed one of the lightbulbs.
5. Wood flooring and really cool light fixtures!
Cons:
1. The first week I found a roach the size of a mouse. However, I haven’t seen any since and we’ve been living here for 3 months now.
2. Management sucks! They never answer the phone even before I moved in and they switched our apartment, and the rent, on us the day before we got our keys. There is no communication between them and even the manager has no idea what’s going on.
3. They have no ceiling fans. This is Arizona so I can’t believe they could be this stupid but not one of the apartments I’ve been in here has a ceiling fan.
Bottom Line:
Honestly, I moved in for the patio so my dogs wouldn’t hate me for making them live in an apartment. I’m happy with what I got and as long as the management doesn’t screw something up I think I’ll continue to be happy. As far as recommending it to a friend I’m not sure yet but I might for someone who wants an apartment with a (kinda) yard.

Not a great neighborhood or great management.
I moved in liking the general accessibility of the area, close to downtown Tempe, Scottsdale and Phoenix. When I reviewed the complex, I liked that the units had recently been remodeled and my unit model had new faux hardwood floors. I moved in and started having issues.
First, the central air made a disturbing banging noise when it turned on – like someone hitting the air ducts with a hammer. When I brought it to the management’s attention their only recommendation was to change out the air filter (which, for some reason, hadn’t been done before I moved in). That solution worked for about 4 days but the air pressure buckling the old air ducts then kicked back in. There was no way to keep up with the issue, so the only practicable solution was to run the air fan nonstop to avoid the wake-​you-​up loudness of the banging. Not as big an issue during the summer when the AC would run most of the day anyway, but I was paying for it in the fall when running the fan made it harder to keep the apartment warm.
Then there’s the security. The complex isn’t gated, and I had my catalytic converter cut out of my truck not once, but *twice* in a 4-​month period. I left messages with the office to give them an FYI of the security issue, and never received a call back. Not even a courtesy call to say «Sorry to hear about that.» It’s a bad neighborhood and there’s no security in place to safeguard your vehicles. Even with insurance living here cost me an extra $ 1000 in deductibles.
Short of the problems above, it’s a serviceable complex for a decent price, but if you have the means at all, please opt for any of the nearby complexes with gates and better amenities. You can get the same accessibility to metro centers and Papago park without worrying about the security of your belongings.
