Residence Inn Tempe Downtown/University

I stay at this hotel with my wife two or three times a year. We started staying here because of the perfect location, we keep coming back because the place is just fantastic. The rooms are clean, quiet, and very comfy; I’ve enjoyed every bed I’ve slept in. I’ve had one-​bedroom suites and studio rooms, both styles are well designed. The rooftop pool is sweet, offering beautiful panoramic views of Tempe. The complimentary breakfast is almost always delicious (I’m not a fan of sausage hash, but usually there’s better stuff on offer). We travel with our two small dogs, and this hotel is pet friendly. The staff has consistently been bend-​over-​backwards helpful for us whenever we’ve needed anything. The city parking garage adjacent to the hotel is very easy to use, and is free on weekends, so for a Fri-​Mon stay I only pay $ 10 total. Billing is straightforward, I’ve never had a questionable charge pop up in a dozen or so stays here. The hotel can be pricey sometimes, but I feel like I get what I pay for. I really can’t say enough good things about this hotel; I look forward to my next stay.

Had a great stay! I booked here because the hotel hosting my conference was booked and they suggested this place. For the same price as a standard room at the other hotel, I got a suite here so when the other place contacted me because they had an opening, I declined. I’m glad I did! The room was gorgeous, clean and spacious. I felt like a million bucks the whole time.
On some nights, they have food and spirits in the lobby at no additional charge and while I didn’t eat any, I did see it and it looked like a good little feast!
I had a LONG gap before my flight and spent 5 hours in the lobby. It was comfortable enough, they let me stow my baggage until I needed it, and they took me to the airport (took about 10 or 15 minutes) and the driver was very courteous.

Truly a terrible experience. Hidden fees to include occupancy charges and $ 10 a day for parking after being told it was «complimentary» with my stay. I’m in the military and Three nights in this hotel drained my ENTIRE paycheck and then some! After about $ 100 of hidden fees I owed them $ 800! Even though I didn’t eat or drink anything in the room and I didn’t even have room Service! The employees were not helpful at all. DO NOT stay here, please don’t.The lack of compassion and value here, for a 3 star hotel, is simply unacceptable. They do not care about their customers, they are snakes!

I checked in last Saturday afternoon about 2:30 and was told that the only room that was clean was on the 3^rd floor and it was dark. Mind you I needed to shower for a 4pm wedding so could not wait until another room was ready. Dark was a complete misrepresentation.
I had waited until a week before to make my reservation so was not able to take advantage of the $ 130 room rate and ended up paying $ 209. Also, my Marriot Rewards profile specifically requests a high floor (11 in this hotel).
The bed was very comfortable I have to say and the gym and it’s million dollar view was great. But that still doesn’t make up for the 50 cent view from my room, which I could have tolerated had they given me a discount for the tradesman room and view. Not even a sorry, just… oh well. Shuttle driver was very good. It’s not too late to make amends Marriott.

This is my third time staying at this location. When I am in the Phoenix /​Tempe area it is the only place I will stay. The rooms are modern and most of all, clean and the staff are always friendly, available and efficient. I travel quite a bit so the one thing that I look for is good service and cleanliness. This residence inn covered both quite well.
My son is a freshman at. ASU. This location is all of three blocks from his dorm so it makes it super convenient. We were in town this weekend for parent weekend and the facility was filled to capacity. The staff handled everything so well you didn’t even realize it and everyone seemed happy and comfortable. Those who didn’t feel like braving the heat and heading over to the stadium for the game relaxed in the lobby and watched it on the TV… Including my elderly aunt. She was happy that she got a chance to watch the game with other people.
The location is also two blocks from Mill Street and all of the excitement that happens there even when you’re part of the ‘older crowd’ like us. We ate, drank and partied and were back in the room by 11 PM before the young crowd started to show up.
Not only is this place awesome but the rates are very reasonable as well. The last time we were here we were able to get a two bedroom, two bathroom unit which fit my family perfectly.

The hotel was very clean and well staffed, but the bed was horrible. Very uncomfortable. After three nights there, my back was very stiff. Also the two air conditioning vents were right above the bed and made the bed cold while the rest of the room was just comfortable. Lastly, when I called and booked, I asked if the price included all fees, when I arrived they told me they charged $ 10 a day for parking. I do not like hidden fees, especially when I asked before booking. Not a lot of great places to stay in Tempe, so not a bad choice, but not a 5 star by any stretch.

Where do I start? First of all, the location is amazing. It’s right across the street from A Mountain (hiking) and in the center of everything you want to be close to while visiting Tempe. The hotel is also pet friendly, and we brought both of our dogs. There are plenty of places to walk your dogs, in fact, I think they got more exercise while we vacationed then while we’re home. Many of the restaurants are also god friendly so you don’t have to leave them in the room while you’re out. Their complimentary breakfast is huge — everything you could possibly want… eggs, sausage, bagels, waffles, yogurt parfaits, fruit, cereal, pastries, rice, it was all there and they keep it stocked and fresh. My favorite part though (besides location) was the rooftop fire pit. First of all, you have this amazing view of Tempe and into Phoenix, but they have this huge fire pit with lounge chairs and couches. We went there every night, brought our own beer and wine and stayed until midnight. Oh — I forgot to mention the rooms also have a little kitchen — full fridge, dishwasher, stove, microwave, coffee maker and toaster. We didn’t use it but it was handy for leftovers and reheating as well as keeping our adult beverages cool. I would 100% recommend this for any type of traveler. It’s one of the best places, overall, that I’ve ever stayed. PS they also have a gym (didn’t use it, I hiked instead) and a pool that my kids used nightly too.

Very clean, comfortable, and friendly hotel. It seems pretty new. The rooms are spacious and nice, and the free breakfast is pretty standard in terms of variety but high quality.
The staff, especially the front desk and shuttle driver, were very helpful and accommodating. Thanks for a great stay!

I stayed 5 nights at this hotel for a business trip. My company paid for the entire stay.
It is not a typical hotel, it is supposed to be more like an apartment. They don’t have a luggage rack in your room, for example. You are supposed to use the closet and drawers. I pushed the 2 kitchen chairs together and made my own luggage rack ;o)
Location
It takes about 15 minutes from the airport by car when there is no rush hour traffic. The hotel is right in the middle of the ASU campus.
Room
I had requested a king room. The room (308) was a nice size. There is a desk/​office chair and table/​desk in the corner that you can use as a desk for your laptop if you need it with a nice table lamp and 4 outlets on the desk to charge devices. There is a dining table an chairs an a sofa.
Bathroom
The bathroom was large, with one sink and plenty of counter area for all of my makeup, hair and toiletry needs. The bathtub is standard size with a shower curtain. The toilet and shower are in one room with a door, the sink its outside the door with a very large closet.
Closet
The closet is not deep, so I wasn’t able to close it when I had things hanging.
Kitchen
Because it’s like an apartment, people cook in their rooms. You have a nice cooktop with 2 burners, various size pots, dishes, mugs and glasses, a coffee pot and toaster. There are utensils and a can opener in the drawer. There is a full sized refrigerator and dishwasher. My dishes had mini dust bunnies hanging off of them an one mug had been put back in the cabinet unwashed, so I doubt anyone had used the dishes in my room for quite some time. I ran everything through the dishwasher when I arrived.
The room has popcorn and water (I believe these are for purchase but I’m not sure, I didn’t use them). The room next to me burned their bag of popcorn at midnight and set off the smoke alarms. Since I couldn’t tell if it was my smoke alarm or theirs, and there was smoke coming from under the door between our rooms, I got dressed and went downstairs. The hallway smelled like burned popcorn all week, my room smelled of burned popcorn for one day and then it was gone. I asked people if my clothes smelled of burned popcorn an they said no. I’m sure people didn’t enjoy me cooking bacon every morning, so I would call this a wash.
I found the bed to be on the lumpy side and not 100% comfortable, but not annoying enough to move. I was able to regulate the room temperature easily. The hvac was not noisy, I put the fan on hi so that I didn’t have to hear the compressor go on and off all night long (but I do sleep with a white noise machine so that does help as well).
There is one large tv in the room.
Check In
Check-​in was easy, no lines mid-​day on Sunday, two front desk personnel on hand every time I went by, day, night an middle of the night (popcorn incident). I received my standard requested items in my Marriott profile. My room was ready even though I arrived before Check-​In.
Hotel Staff
The hotel staff is very friendly. Housekeeping did a good job on the days that I requested service.
Parking
There is a parking garage attached to the hotel. It is $ 10/​day with in and out privileges, you have it added to your room card. You swipe in and out. On your last day, you swipe out and put the card in the drop by next to the swipe machine.
There are parking spots designated on each level for hotel guests, they are closest to the elevators. During busy times (as it was when I was here during Spring Training), people park anywhere, so there may not be a convenient spot to park.
Noise
The inside of the hotel was very quiet at night. The outside is in the middle of ASU, so there is a lot of late night activity (skateboarding at midnight outside the parking garage, and one night a police car/​sirens went by at about 2 am.
Restaurant/​Breakfast
Breakfast comes with the room. Hot eggs an various meat sides changed every day with oatmeal, fruit, yogurt, cereal, breads, coffee and tea. If you are not a picky eater you are fine. If you stick to low carb or protein, you will probably buy your own food and eat in your room as I did all but one day.
Pool/​Fitness Center
I did not have time to use/​visit the pool or use the fitness equipment.
GPS/​Cell Phone/​Internet
My gps worked fine getting around the entire area and got me to the correct location every time. Cell phone service was perfect everywhere in the hotel. Hotel free wifi worked fine for my needs to check email and Facebook. I didn’t upgrade to the paid service for either my room or my meeting.
Overall I enjoyed my stay and would stay here again and recommend it to my co-​workers for future travel.

Very clean, a new hotel with a modern atmosphere. The rooms are very comfortable and the roof top pool/​Jacuzzi/​fire pit is awesome! A great view of the mountains and at night the fire pit is great to have a couple friends hang out and drink some «dranks» lol
The staff is very friendly and accommodating.

Newer beautiful hotel! Amazing suites with full kitchen (full size refrigerator, stove, microwave and all plates/​silverware etc!). Free continental breakfast with eggs, oatmeal, breakfast sandwiches, fruit, juices and more! Free happy hour snacks– tonight was spaghetti and meatballs, veggies and desserts! Free shuttle to and from airport! Walking distance to Mill Ave and ALL the restaurants and bars. Great location. Awesome hotel! Highly recommend!!!

Couldn’t book an overlapping week a year in advance. I was told I would need to call back at MN every night to advance my reservation by one day. Thanks Marriott, you made booking my reservation to The Hyatt Place a lot easier!

You can’t complain about this location, right next to the ASU stadium and Mill Ave. Price for the room was good, and it was a big room. Everything is pretty much brand new. Pool on the rooftop has a great view of the stadium and A-​mountain. Free breakfast too! And it has real food like eggs and toast, not just cereal.

typically I find hotels to nearly be the same all around the world. However, the Residence Inn Tempe has comfortable rooms with plenty of outlets for electronic devices — and easy to reach and access.
The front desk staff and hotel service is the best experience. Everyone is ultra friendly. There is paid parking connected to the hotel which is connected to your room key. The hotel is adjacent to Mill Avenue with plenty of restaurants within walking distance.
There is a pool, gym and whirlpool on the 11^th floor. It has an amazing view and had towels by the pool so your don’t have to lug around towels from your room. There is laundry on the 2^nd floor with state of the art washers/​dryers. My room had a full kitchenette and full size refrigerator. You could not ask for more.
Prices are a bit high compared to other locations, but perhaps worth the cost if you want a nicely kept property and convenience of nearby attractions.

Stayed here for 1 week to help my daughter get settled @ ASU.
Lobby and rooms were clean and well maintained everyday and you can’t beat the location: I walked everywhere ! But the 5-​star rating is mostly regarding the staff (EBONI, TASHA, ISABELA and CAMERON). Most Hotels are clean (I’m a WESTIN kinda girl) and comfortable but for me It’s ALL about the Customer Service and this crew was «Top Notch»: Professional, Polite and Friendly.
. Remebered my name and spoke to me everyday (How’s your stay? Anything I can help you with? Have you been to the pool? Have a good night !) It was like «home away from home» (did I forget to mention the rate was about $ 150 – 200 less than what I usually pay @ my favorite hotel? No roomservice but a great delivery menu that they give each guest-lot’s of choices).
Well done Marriott for hiring a staff that will keep me coming back when visiting Tempe, AZ/​ASU.

Newer, beautiful, modern hotel with very clean spacious suites conveniently located near ASU and downtown Tempe. The front desk staff was very sweet and helpful. The rooftop pool and firepit had gorgeous views. Kudos to the management and staff for keeping up the appearance and cleanliness.
A few minor things of note:
Breakfast was pretty good, although the staff seemed to struggle to keep up with demand. The small eating area was crowded the entire time we were there around 8:15 on a Sunday morning so get there early. The small pool was also crowded with a lot of drinking and smoking well into the night. I would be remiss if I didn’t mention the inconvenient parking. The lot fills up quickly, and you have to take an elevator to the hotel, then another elevator up to your room.
We would stay here again if we were ever in the area.

Nice building & friendly staff (for the most part), just a little pricey! It’s a convenient location though. It takes less than 10 minutes to reach Mill Ave. by walking. Although I liked the hotel I don’t think I will be coming back, I went to Mill Ave. to checkout the nightlife & was not impressed! Too hot, drunks & homeless walking around, & cockroaches crawling around the sidewalks. Ew!

Stayed there during May long weekend. Were four so got suite on 4^th floor. Room was not with view, so didn’t like that part but I guess that was the only available at that time. Hotel was newly renovated so everything was modern with two LCD TVS’; auto light shutdown and well maintained kitchen and washrooms. 11^th floor Full Gym, hot tub and pool was very relaxing and romantic. Every thing, night life, dinning and river walk was with in walking distance. I would love to go back there gain.

This is my third trip that I stayed at this place. I love the fact that it’s new, just open in October 2013. First time I stayed on the 8^th floor, 2^nd time was on the 9^th and this time was on the 7^th. I like my 9^th floor room the best. Great view, low noise level. Maybe because of spring training the hotel seems a lot noisier this time. Lots of kids running around late at night.
The hotel is decorated with modern contemporary which fits my decorating style. I rather pay more for something than cheap on poor quality. The pool, gym, and patio lounge is on the 10^th floor. Roof top offers fantastic view of surrounding ASU campus. Breakfast is on the 1^st floor in the morning, around the corner from the elevators. Don’t eat the scramble eggs. I don’t know how most people eat scramble eggs but I don’t like scramble eggs to taste like watery rubber. I usually get some yogurt, some fresh fruit (if it looks fresh), cup of OJ, and a piece of toast.
I will definitely stay here again until this place starts to deteriorate. With ASU campus around the corner, the late night drunk college kids regurgitating their evening drinks is a common scene. The plus side is the eye candy around the ASU campus. Food around this area is geared towards college lifestyle. Have to travel north towards Scottsdale for quality food.

We stayed here this past weekend as it was super conveniently located to the start and finish lines of the Rock and Roll Half Marathon. We checked in late in the day on Saturday after driving out from LA and having spent the evening getting our race packets in Phoenix and drinking beer at Four Peaks. The guy at check in (I think his name was Dan) was extremely friendly, energetic and efficient.
We were pleasantly surprised by how modern, clean and well appointed our room was. It had an actual full kitchen (pots and pans, dishes, dishwasher, full size fridge), a little couch, a queen sized bed and a tiny balcony with a view of nothing. Literally, my only complaints about the room were that I wished it had a king bed rather than a queen but I know that I’m being picky and a queen bed is totally sufficient and that the climate control was easier to figure out because I totally had a fight with that thing. The control panel has 3 buttons — a red arrow up, a blue arrow down and a fan button. I could not for the life of me figure out how to switch it to JUST fan so the AC or heat wouldn’t cycle on and off every 10 minutes. Then the unit started making a weird bomb like ticking sound, so we just gave up and switched off the power to it in the breaker box so then it was a little stuffy, but we dealt.
We missed breakfast the next morning because we overslept and were rushing to get to the run on time, but we did swing by on our second morning there and it’s a standard free breakfast — weak coffee, plentiful carbs (bagels, oatmeal, cereal, muffins) and a few hot choices (scrambled eggs, potatoes and potato/​sausage mix) but it was enough to keep us from being starving for the earlier part of our drive.
What is really special was that the pool, spa and firepit that are on the roof are open 24 hours. We didn’t take advantage of any of that because there were some college girls gathered chatting around the firepit drinking wine and we were so tired all we wanted was quiet, but so many hotels I’ve stayed at close the pool at 7 which is WAY too early.
I don’t forsee a reason to go back to Tempe in the future, but I would absolutely recommend this hotel as a solid option if you’re looking for something clean and convenient in the area.
