The Butcher & The Baker

We wandered into town on a Sunday morning during the bluegrass festival; most of the town was still asleep, but we saw a small crowd outside The Butcher & The Baker, so we hung out to see what it was about.
As soon as it opened, the line for ordering was almost out the door! We snagged a couple seats at the bar, where they had already laid out the breakfast menu. The waitress handed us tall mugs of coffee (which was much tastier than what we bought at the Coffee Cowboy) and took our orders. We chatted with our neighbors while we waited – the atmosphere was fast-​paced, but without the stress, which was pretty cool.
The chorizo and egg plate was delicious and I loved the addition of lettuce and fruit! It was the complete package. We also got the french toast, and we have never seen bigger slices of amazing bread than what we received here! They were perfectly fried, and the fresh berries harmonized tastily with the syrup and toast.
It’s small, but we also enjoyed the casual presentation of the checks – the waitress placed the bill in a small glass and set it on the bar for whenever we were ready.

My wife and I had breakfast here on the first morning of the Bluegrass Festival in June 2016. We ordered oatmeal, toast, lox and bagels, and OJ. The orange juice was fresh squeezed and super delicious. The smoked salmon was super fresh — the best we ever had. The oatmeal was very good. Our breakfast tab including coffee and juice was $ 25. Instead of waiters/​waitresses, you walk up and place your order, and then they call your name when the food is ready, and you take the food to your table. The food is wonderful and healthy, prices are not too high, and the place is very popular. I recommend this place! It’s good!

We stopped in for a quick cinnamon bun, oatmeal and cappuccino. Everything was delicious, filling, and the cappuccino was one of the best we had in Telluride. I love their outdoor seating, as well!

Stopped in for a pre-​hike breakfast and coffee on a recent trip to Telluride. This was the weekend between the film festival and the bluegrass festival, so the town was a little slower (and lines a little shorter) than what you’d probably find on a busy weekend. The interior was adorable, but crowded — like they’d tried to put too many tables into a small and narrow space. An order-​at-​the-​counter style place, with the deli and pastry case to the side for you to drool over while you’re waiting in line.
My boyfriend and I both decided on the house coffee and the breakfast burrito. The prices were great, although I didn’t find anything in Telluride to be as spendy as some other ski towns in Colorado. The coffee was piping hot, absolutely delicious, and served in a mug so tall that I didn’t even need a refill! Our food came out fast, literally handed to me before I had even made it to my table with our coffees. The burrito was so fresh and hot that I had to wait a couple of minutes for it to cool off, but the wait was so worth it! Creamy sweet potatoes melded supremely well with the savory sausage and other heavenly ingredients, all wrapped up inside a delicious tortilla! Yum!
If you find yourself in Telluride, you absolutely must check this place out!

Recently visited Telluride during off season– not to many places open so we were excited to find a place that seemed good– a bunch of employees/​owners all over the place but we were lost on how to eat here– after few min we figured out u order at counter– we ordered breakfast burro and bacon and eggs (apparently they don’t have sausage or potatoes)
My 2 egg breakfast was ok– toast was grilled tons of butter not toasted — breakfast burro they forgot but When we asked they grabbed one premade and nuked it!
I think a little more effort this place could be great! ! They r taking some short cuts that I think will be the demise of this place if not corrected! Your a bakery and butchery place! Serve fresh burritos and sausage– and when u have 5 employees at venue take orders at table!

I was pretty happy with this place. I had the Chilaques and a latte, and they were delicious. The Chilaques was basically a vegetarian breakfast nachos dish, and was more than filling. I feel the price was a little high, but we are talking about a ski town away from any major metropolis. The real reason why can’t give them a perfect score is because they did initially forget my order. It was very busy so I understand for the most part, but definitely had to mark them down a little.
The atmosphere was nice, and the staff was pretty friendly despite the chaos. I would definitely go again. I would probably try the Bagel & Lox next time as I saw a lot of people eating it.

We went there for breakfast and wow it was great. The cinnamon buns were the best and the coffee was very smooth. We also had dinner there one night and it was a totally different experience. The waiter was not familiar with the menu and my Salmon/​Horchata was awful. Just smoked on a bed of ice cold flavorless white stuff. No starch at all. No veggies. The dishes and the cups were downright scary. They were shabby chic enameled metal in which a lot of the enamel was worn away. I could see rust through my water as I was drinking from the cup. I think this is not okay with the health department!!! This cheap dinnerware needs to be thrown out. It is absolutely unsafe. It is so surprising that the owner allows such horrible dinnerware.

I have been coming to Telluride for 15+ years, and spend the majority of my life on the road eating in restaurants. The food in this establishment is absolutely the best I’ve eaten in Telluride, and surpasses anything else I’ve eaten in recent memory. The bartender, Sebastian, was amazing. His preparation of drinks, attentive service and knowledge of the food, made both visits this week top notch. If you don’t eat here you’re missing out on an incredible meal.

Cappuccino is decent but overpriced at$ 5.00. Skip the bagels, just undercooked dough (although I requested extra dark). Sort of self serve. No napkins or extras you would expect for the price. Overall okay. Telluride needs a Starbucks!

Worst service EVER!!. I was actually there on Monday with my boyfriend, we HD just some coffee and a pastry after walking around town and wanted something quick. The cashier wasn’t so friendly and bit stand off-​ish but it’s okay. I understand it’s busy lunch time, my latte was good and it was a quick stop for snack.
Tonight (Thursday night), the six of us showed up at the restaurant again for dinner (because Brown dog pizza wait list was an hour long), after walking up and down the Main Street, we saw the restaurant was pretty empty. Unlike other Unilocalers who left the reviews for this restaurant, we had dinner and not just your casual brunch or breakfast. I understand that during lunch hour, a café such as this, you don’t expect much service.
Well, dinner tonight was a big disappointment. The menu items seems very creative and reasonable price, and our the waitress was knowledgeable of menu items, she was not attentive least a bit. There were one couple in the restaurant and 4 people at the bar, until we arrived. We waited a long time for the cocktails to arrive and for her to take our orders. Not ONCE, after the appt nor entrée were delivered, she asked any one of my party if we needed anything else, it’s like we have to catch her at the right moment to ask for something. If you have been to the restaurant, you will see that the interior is small and you can see everything, she was busy cleaning some cups behind the bar and then making the cooks some coffee (with whipped cream– yup I saw it all). The manger (man) was just walking back and forth and didn’t notice our water cup were empty. The six of us all agreed that we didn’t receive the best service.
I see why this restaurant was empty while other restaurants were so full, you need to retrain your wait staff.
If I ever come back here, I will not be visiting your store.

Delicious! Absolutely delicious! Went for breakfast this morning with my best girl, and what a treat! Design is hip and casual, with lots to look at and inform. Full bar, and a menu ready for hungry (maybe hung-​over) foodies.
She had eggs and bacon, I had a breakfast sandwich on english muffin. Both were straightforward and perfect for the early morning cravings. Not too greasy and served up with greens… I’m a BIG fan of breakfast salad.
We had sides of sesame garlic kale (Goddam), and asparagus parmesan salad (totally stealing that idea for my own kitchen!). Went very well with the bacon and eggs we had. Not overly seasoned, just enough to celebrate the natural flavor of the vegetables. Too often this subtlety is overlooked or under-​appreciated, so good work, guys!
Iced americano with cinnamon was perfect, and if I lived here, they’d know me by name in no time!
Had a late night? Want to break-​feast but not feel like a sack of shit after? This is your place. Nice people, cool setup, and interesting looking bar menu (maybe next time, B&B!)

Let me start off this review by stating that I had high hopes for this place. I was craving a delicious breakfast with some excellent coffee, and I was definitely underwhelmed. Before attending breakfast, I read a ton of reviews — especially recent ones. Things sounded good, so we decided to give it a try. My wife ordered the scramble and I had their special, 3 egg tacos with bacon, avocado, cheese and a side of potatoes. We also had a mocha and chia latte.
The scramble: Decent, but lacked in seasoning.
The special: The eggs were completely under-​seasoned and lacked all signs of salt and pepper. The potatoes had BARELY touched the frying pan and were completely white, also completely void of any salt or pepper.
The drinks: Decent coffee, but nothing to write home about.
Take away: I honestly don’t think I’ll return. The chef may be young (according to a few reviews) but he has a lot to learn. Salt and pepper are essential to ANY dish. If you can’t season properly, you’ll never have great flavors. That’s a huge must. Maybe the food will be better later down the road once the chef has more experience under his belt.

We live in New York and all we do is eat. We eat, we work, we exercise, we eat, we drink, and then we eat. We have been around the block when it comes to food — and I must say, I was really impressed with the Butcher and the Baker.
We spent a couple months in Telluride this past season and we ate at every restaurant. Quite honestly, I really don’t understand why people love Cosmopolitan, Chop
House and 221 Oak so much? Menus are trite and they have the same old, same old on them. Sushi at Cosmopolitan is so dumbed down that it appears to appeal to people who really don’t want to eat raw fish. I digress, but I just wanted to note that we are always looking for things that are unique versus pedestrian, trite food that is pawned off as gourmet, when it really isn’t. Yep, I said it.
Anyway, the menu is inventive and they really can execute the proteins. This guy does not over cook anything. And he understands subtle flavor and how to impart flavor in dishes without being «too much in your face.» The chef is young, and he has a lot of talent. He’s just going to continue to grow and really stretch his wings.
I can’t comment as much about the baked items because I only had a few. I did not love the cookies, to be honest. The ginger cookie needed more umph and salt. And the Cinda-​roll cinnamon bun really lacked flavor. It did not have much cinnamon, and it pretty much tasted like a yeast dinner roll with a lot of cloying sweet icing. That’s just not how I roll, when it comes to cinnamon rolls. And I really think given that this restaurant promotes itself as a baker, they really need to offer bread service. That’s also a good way to sell more baked goods to take home.
The cocktail program is pretty good — but I think they need to do some more training with the crew to make sure everyone knows how to make the specific drinks, if the lead bartender is not available. The wine list is definitely lackluster, but it appears that no one really drinks wine there! A couple of times I ordered bottles, and they were not cold — the wines by the glass were really crappy ones, so I had to order a bottle.
We ate a number of savory dishes, but my husband loved the oyster Po boy. I won’t get into all of the dishes, but most everything was pretty solid, not overly sauced or dressed, which seems to be very popular in Telluride. They honor the food. They honor the ingredients. Oh, and I don’t eat french fries, but I have to get a special gold star for those fries.
One slight gripe — I don’t understand why ownership allows folks to park at tables with their computers, order one glass of tea and stay there for hours. This isn’t Starbucks. There are customers like we who want to sit down at the table and actually order food. I understand you want to appeal to all folks, but is it really cool to let someone nurse one drink for hours, taking up tables that hungry patrons need. I noted this at least on three occasions, but mostly during lunch.
Overall, I definitely give this restaurant a thumbs up and recommended it over the same old touristy shit in Telluride. it’s very very good.

This place is so great. Excellent for any meal, with solid, healthy menu options. The kitchen obviously takes quality ingredients and execution both seriously.
The service has always been top notch.
It’s my wish that one day they’ll open one in Durango… a town with a need for a restaurant/​café just like this! Butcher and Baker would crush it in Durango as well.

This place has a great breakfast, but best & with the largest selection during Brunch on Sundays. Really good eggs and pancakes. The bacon was a bit too salty for my taste. Really good selection of what looks like delicious desserts too, but I didn’t try them.

Took a chance on this place and it was definitely yummy!
I wasn’t sure if The Butcher & The Baker was going to be worth the walk from the hotel in the freezing cold but thank goodness it came through: D This is definitely a local’s hangout: people were chatting with each other about their health, people they knew, stuff happening around town, it was pretty cool! My mom and I ordered two sandwiches to split: the steak sandwich and the grilled chicken with bacon.
Glad we got a seat because a huge crowd turned up after we sat down! A server brought our food to us and we dug in. I enjoyed both sandwiches because they had different flavors; the steak with the roasted peppers and onions had great flavor, but I was a bit bummed it wasn’t warm. The chicken was tender and tasted awesome with the bacon and avocado. The addition of pickled jalapeños kicked it up a notch :)
I saw a lot of people ordering from the deli too so maybe that’ll be something to try next time around. The desserts looked amazing too!

Very excited about this place. Food was fantastic, home cooked organic feel. Décor really cool. Salsa omelet was awesome!

Had Sunday brunch here and wish I’d come for a weekday lunch or dinner or drink instead! The cocktail menu looks awesome. The breakfast/​brunch menu was way overpriced – the French toast that the guy next to me was eating, for example, looked delicious, but it didn’t look like it was worth $ 13! I can get cheaper French toast (with a side of eggs or bacon, to boot) in New York City’s trendy brunch spots.
Instead of spending $ 12-​$ 15 for one of the meals I really wanted (everything coming out of the kitchen looked so good!), I ordered a breakfast burrito for $ 7.75…if I had known that this was the one item on the menu that is pre-​made, I wouldn’t have ordered it. It was so disappointing to watch all the other patrons get yummy-​looking eggs and pancakes and stuff while my plate just had an aluminum foil-​wrapped burrito and a sad-​looking side of salsa. All that said, the burrito wasn’t bad. And the ambience at this restaurant is definitely charming.

This place is awesome! I have been here for both dinner and breakfast.
They have 5 or 6 beers on draft and a small selection of bottled beers and wine. For dinner we had appetizers, and beers, at the bar.
For breakfast, we had chicken chilaquiles, lox, and the brunch special. Good coffee as well.

Very good breakfast. It was suggested by a local and seems to be mostly frequented by locals. The staff was friendly and helpful to a first time visiter and and ham, cheese and spinach scrabbled eggs were terrific. I will be back.
I was puzzled by the relatively low rating and wanted to give them a well deserved bump.

I’m surprised to see that this place only has 3.5 stars. This place was recommended by one of the bartenders at There, where we ate the night before. We went for breakfast the next morning and ordered the bacon, egg and cheese sandwich and the bagel with lox. Both far surpassed our expectations given the other Unilocal reviews.
The bacon was perfectly crispy and tasted like it was perhaps peppered or seasoned. The english muffins are homemade, and way larger than your standard muffins. Lastly, the egg… I ordered the egg well done with no yolk, and I still can’t figure out how they made this egg so perfect. When I cook them well done at home they get pretty dry, but this egg was fully cooked and still extremely moist and flavorful. I’m going to have to do some googling to find out how they do this!
The lox bagel comes with a ton of lox — not just a slathered cream cheese bagel with some thinly sliced salmon. I really didn’t think my husband was going to be able to eat all of it, but he was up to the challenge and succeeded. His only complaint was that he had to do all the assembly himself and there were no capers, but the quality of the lox made up for that.
The prices are a little high for breakfast sandwiches (~$ 10), but you do get a lot of food for the $. We ate breakfast around 10/10:30 and weren’t hungry again until dinner.
Lastly, I had checked others’ reviews for this note and couldn’t find it: there is a small section of outdoor seating (bench with table) under each window. Each bench can probably hold about 4 people and it is dog friendly. Great views from there, too.

Came for a late lunch after hiking – love this place!
Had the turkey chili soup of the day; it had a ton of flavor! Husband had the veggie panini, which had a lot of veggies and was nice and crisp. I had the peppered tofu salad, to which I added grilled salmon – soooo good! I gave the tofu to my husband since he loves it, and he said it was peppery and cooked perfectly. The sesame dressing on the salad was yummy, and just the right amount – too many places overdress their salads. The grilled salmon was about 4 – 5 oz, and moist and flavorful.
They have a sign at the counter asking you to please bus your own dishes; when I did so, the cashier came up behind me and said «Thanks, lovey!». This is indicative of the super friendly, appreciative service in Telluride – everyone seems truly happy to be here, doing what they’re doing. I love that!
We went back for breakfast this morning; sat at the counter and ordered the oatmeal, a blueberry muffin, and the breakfast sandwich with spinach and tomatoes. Husband’s muffin and oatmeal came within 5 minutes, but my sandwich was sitting up in the kitchen counter for over 10 minutes until we asked for it… our server got distracted and forgot it.
The food was, again, delicious! Lots of spinach on my Sammie, which was on a large, crisp English muffin. Oatmeal was hot and had cranberries and almonds for toppings. The muffin had lots of blueberries and was moist.
You have to try this place if you are in Telluride!

I liked this place so much I visited twice while in Telluride recently. They have pretty awesome sandwiches and a lot of lovely salads and veggie plates. It’s a nice option to get 1 – 2 veggie sides on a plate and have that for lunch, or go for a bigger sandwich. I tried their signature roast beef with caramelized onions and swiss and it was very good. I liked the roast turkey one better. And do not miss their cookies for dessert — they made a ginger molasses one that was awesome.

What a tasty treat! I met friends in the little park across the street, and they had acquired all sorts of delectable goods from this fantastic store. I consumed a swath flavors: cauliflower curry; seaweed salad; sesame garlic kale; and feta watermelon. Each little dish was magical on a slightly-​too-​hot afternoon during the Bluegrass Festival.
So, vegetarians, don’t be fooled by this oddly-​named café. There are fantastic veggie-​friendly dishes to be had within!

Waitress was not a happy camper.
Chai latte was nice. Not very spicy, but it was good. Get your own water.
Had a cindabun to start. They didn’t even warm it up. Not strong in cinnamon flavor, and no gooey glaze. Not bad, but not really good either.
I had a bacon and cheese breakfast sandwich. Basic, but nothing else really caught my eye. None of their dishes come with any sides, so I was worried about being hungry later. It came out with spinach and tomato… but no cheese. I alerted the not friendly waitress, and she took it back to add a slice of cheese. My husband was half way through his breakfast by the time I got my sandwich back. I was afraid they’d made me another one, which wasn’t necessary, but no, it just took them that long to put a slice of cheese on it. I also thought the menu said 2 eggs (which I didn’t need), but it definitely only had one. That may have been a misread on my part though; I can’t swear to it.
Hubs had the GF blueberry pancakes, which were the most expensive item on the menu. Three slightly larger than silver dollar pancakes came out, and that was it. Nothing «wowed» about them, and he was starving again well before lunch.
The place was cute. Very Pinterest-​y. We were there in shoulder season, so they were almost full, but not busy enough that we had to wait.

Woooah, this place is wonderful! Like, so good that we came two mornings in a row. And we were only in town for two days… That’s gotta say something.
You place your order at one station & then pay at another. You’re given a table marker that you’re supposed to place on your table if you order something that has to be prepared in the back. The seating can be a little scarce if you come at a super busy time. But we didn’t have any trouble finding a table. Also, you bus your own table & everything is pretty much self serve. I’m a fan of this system. You can also grab your own water. And they don’t put out those typical flimsy plastic cups. They have actual cups. The interior is super duper cute.
There are delicious pastries displayed near the ordering station. They’re so tempting, we had to try them. We got a chocolate croissant our first trip & a cindabun the second. Both were just great! So great that my boyfriend & I had trouble sharing them with one another. Our first trip, we got breakfast burritos. They were so tasty! Pretty unusual combination of flavors but it worked! Just know that they are pre-​made so you can’t make any adjustments to the ingredients. We didn’t have any issue with this. I actually think it would be pretty handy if you’re in a rush or on your way to work. Skip the wait & order a burrito. On our second trip, we ordered breakfast sandwiches on English muffins. The eggs were over medium, which I didn’t even know I liked until having them on this trip. The sandwiches were amazing. And huge! You will not be disappointed.
