Tanya & Matt’s Ice Cream

Very fun place. We stopped here for dessert after eating at Sweet Basil Thai around the corner. They had live music which was unexpected. It’s small but homey place. Our ice cream was good (not the best I’ve ever had, but very tasty and generous scoops) but the mango sorbet I brought home for our son was amazing. Try it!

Living on the North side of Dale Mabry, I pass this place all the time. Since it is small and it usually seems to be full, I put off visiting it until the conditions seemed opportune. Well, I happened to be passing on a rainy Monday afternoon, and figured I would finally stop in… And I’m so glad I did.
Many other reviews I’ve read of this place vary because people visit at different times. I wanted to go in when it was close to empty, to soak in the true atmosphere of the décor, as well as comfortably sit and enjoy my ice cream.
When I went in with my girlfriend Amber, a blonde woman (I’m assuming is one of the owners?) was sitting at a booth crunching numbers with papers sprawled out across the table top. I liked this, to be honest, because she seemed more real, and it added to the small business feel. Even though she came across as kind of cold, I wrote it off as paperwork-​day-​stress and tipped her 5 dollars.
I ordered a float basically (ice cream with club soda, I forget what it was called, but it was essentially a float), and my girlfriend got a cup of Strawberry Cookies and Cream (a rather colorful flavor, being bright pink with specs of black and white cookie).
To be honest my float was mediocre, but then again I’ve never really been a huge float fan. It was basic chocolate ice cream with a club soda that didn’t compliment the ice cream very well. But for a float purist, I would assume it’s classic take on a classic treat. Ambers ice cream however was amazing. Some reviews have said its some the best ice cream they’ve ever tasted and I can agree with that. It was on point.
The decorations have been described by some as childlike; I disagree. I thought they were awesome. I would describe them as authentic and quirky, reminiscent of a distant time (80s?).
There were hanging clouds with paper machete faces (similar to the expressive Moon Man from the poster of the 1902 silent film ‘A Trip to the Moon’. With puffy clouds constructed of cotton. The walls were painted creatively with local news and art hanging near the door. There is also a really cool tree sculpture with it’s tonguesticking out and lights for eyes that stretches from the floor to the ceiling with hanging branches. It was really cool.
The booths seem to be straight out of an old roller rink and the neon and text though out the shop leave every inch visually stimulating to look at. If you go here, I highly recommend sitting and enjoying everything you can.
Overall, I was highly impressed and surprised that there is such a cool spot so close to my home (and in the area in general). I am definitely going back to see the shop in the many different scenarios described in the other reviews, but also to try the many different flavors, treats, and coffee.
I would recommend this place to anyone who enjoys ice cream with a unique and genuine atmosphere.

I really enjoyed the funky selection of flavors. I chose chocolate covered banana and coffee. I love the homemade fresh taste of them both. We will definitely return.

No complaints. I love the décor. Many ice cream flavors to choose from. I stuck to my favorite classic though of Pistachio w/​the almonds topping. An if you don’t like ice cream they also have shakes, smoothies, coffee, & floats.

This place is so classic. It’s been here for years and for good reason. The ice cream is incredible and they offer tons of unique flavors. Everyone here is really friendly and they even have a separate play room for the lil’ ones. Definitely a cool place for all ages.

It was whispered this was some of the best Ice Cream out there. I can NOT dispute this fact. I splurged and got myself a single scoop of Mint Chip. The scoop was HUGE. I mean –HUGE– The flavor was delicious and it was so creamy! It was a delight in my mouth!
I also ordered a large cappuccino. While it wasn’t the perfect cuppa, it was a decent cup of rich java, and that’s just what I wanted with my ice cream. I would reccomend this place to anyone.

Came out of TJ Maxx and saw the people in this ice cream place cleaning up and they were using the floor broom on the counter. That can’t be sanitary.

Extremely dirty place. Food smudges, trash in the floor, roaches, half eaten employee’s Chik Fil A and cigarette lighter sitting on the counter. I can’t believe parents would take kids here. Yuck. Oh yeah and by the way. You don’t get to call your ice cream Oreo Mint if what you actually use is fake store brand chocolate sandwich cookies. I can taste a real Oreo a mile away and this place lies about its ingredients.

Wow! Delicious ice cream! I got the cookies and cream and it was packed with yummy cookies! I got a size small cup and they were huge scoops! My boyfriend got a cone with huge scoops as well! Love this place! They played frank Sinatra music which was such a charm. This will be my go to ice cream place in tampa!

I have been coming here for years, as long as I can remember this ice cream shop has been serving the Northdale area. I love their homemade ice creams and sherbets, my favorite being the SMURF flavor, I don’t know just colored vanilla ice cream is my thing. They have a large and varied assortment of flavors and toppings. I was surprised to see that they have expanded into more ethnic ice creams like green tea and lucuma. I’m excited to go back and try some of their new flavors piled on top of my old standbys.

Fun and quirky ice cream shop. The place seems to be run by kids from the local HS. I used to go here a lot when I went to Gaither. It is the only spot in town I’ve ever been able to find smurf ice cream. Staff is very nice and are helpful, they will give you samples to any ice cream they have on display. They have lots of different flavors so hopefully anyone in your group will be satisfied… Unless you have that one grouch in your bunch that day.

Gotta love the local mom & pop feel & vibe to this place!
they have some interesting and creative flavors such as: Superman, Mississippi Mud, Peppermint Oreo, Mint Oreo, and the misses favorite: Smurf (which tastes a little like cotton candy with marshmallow pieces).
They also do ice sculptures for special occasions so be sure to check out some of their masterpieces! The interior is very playful & colorful which makes for a fun atmosphere! They also have alot of homemade decorations which reminded me of the type of props used in a high school play. Gaither High School is practically next door so you will often see this place frequented by teens looking for a cool place to cool down after a hot day.
Def come check this place out and treat yourself to some great tasting and unique homemade ice cream!

If you like ice cream flavors that are different from the norm, then you need to try this place. During the holidays I had the Eggnog ice cream and it was fabulous. The other night I had Tirumisu and I wasn’t into it. My stepson, however, had the pralines and cream and it was quite tasty and creamy. There are 2 things I don’t like here: 1) the smell when you walk in is very bleachy. I appreciate the owner wanting the place clean, but I really hate the smell of bleach. 2) the musical group playing was MUCH too loud for such a small space! Maybe lower the volume? Not my first choice to go for ice cream but not horrible either.

BEST Ice cream in Tampa (maybe the country!). There is something to be said for things that are still remaining from childhood and this is definitely one. I have been a patron since they first opened the really small shop before the center was rebuilt and the ice cream just continues to improve.
There is just about any flavor you can imagine. If you like chocolate everything, vanilla with sprinkles, or a full fledged banana split, this is the place for you. My personal favorites are peanut butter blast and grasshopper. I don’t even know what the other flavors taste like, but I can tell you everyone in my family has one or two go to flavors and they rave about them like no other.
It definitely decorated a little wacky as you would expect and hope from an Ice cream parlor and if you are lucky enough you can sometimes watch Matt do his ice sculpting on the sidewalk out front while you enjoy your cone!
Bring in your TJ Maxx receipt or be a student and I believe you receive a little discount on your bill too!
My recommendation is to find your two favorite flavors, order one to eat and one to take home for the next day!

Why 3 stars? Good selection on ice cream, free samples and friendly staff. Place could use a good interior remodel. Price a bit high for a mom and pop ice cream parlor, over $ 8 including a 10% discount for 2 single scoop ice cream cones.

Small ice cream shop nestled in a Shopping Center. This is a nice place to stop with kids as it is decorated with a lot of kids like stuff and the night we were there they had live music.
The live music was a gentleman sitting on a stool playing a guitar and singing, and at one point he had a woman with him singing as well. The live music is a nice touch and amused our grandson. I kind of enjoyed the Puff The Magic Dragon set myself.
They have a good variety of ice cream. We each got something different and everything was tasty. Honestly I don’t know if I’ve ever had bad ice cream anywhere.
If you live in the area, or are in the area stop in and treat yourself and stop in.

Great Ica cream… I was looking for a home made flavor on a Sunday evening… and we found it… my daughter had a regular chocolate twist, my son had a vanilla waffle cone, my wife a raisin run sugar cone and I had a regular vainilla twist… the ice creams were thick and delicious… the service and feel is of the regualar mom and pops place… 0 Franchise feel…

I took my nephew here after we finished playing glow golf next door on a Thursday afternoon. The shop is unique with a mixture of scary/​cool decorations. I like the giant paper mâché looking tree as you enter the store. My nephew thought it was creepy.
The menu is vast and there are plenty of ice cream flavors to choose from! I had the tiramisu and the nephew chose cookies & cream. He loved his; although I’m not sure I know of many 9yo’s that wouldn’t love any type of ice cream. Mine was ok. Good but not great. We sat inside at one of the tables. Negative: table was dirty and about to topple over. I think the base pole was broken/​loose.
I’ve visited this place another time a couple of years ago on a Friday night, and I think either the owner or someone they hired was ice sculpting in front of the store. Very entertaining. I think they have entertainment like this every weekend.

Awesome place to get fresh, homemade ice cream. I had some delicious ice cream there. It’s quite rich and flavorful. I love trying to pick fun combos to put together. They have some cool places to sit and friendly staff. I do wish that it was closer to where I live. I love supporting local businesses and would go there a lot more often. Keep in mind that their flavors are always changing, so I wouldn’t keep too closely to what they have on their website.
