History

Established in 1986.

Shear Art Salon & Spa has been servicing the hair and skincare needs of Tampa’s finest since 1986. Joanne Powers, Shear Art’s owner, opened Shear Art at the Village Corners. After spending 11 years in the heart of Carrollwood Village, Shear Art moved to the Village Center in order to accommodate its booming client base. At present, Shear Art provides services for over 15,000 Tampa Bay residents.

Shear Art features the finest hair designers, nail and skincare technicians, hair replacement and extension specialists. Shear Art’s designers have been featured in five international magazines and 2 national television shows since 2002.

In addition to being a community business, Shear Art hosts an annual cut-​a-​thon to benefit local charities. To date, Shear Art has raised over $ 100,000 for local charities.

Joanne Powers, President of Shear Art Salon and Spa selected as a spokesperson for Redken 5th Avenue NYC’s Shades EQ campaign.

Powers participated in a New York based photo shoot and video recording session for the launch of Shades EQ’s 20th anniversary. In addition, she served as a featured speaker in New York City on Thursday, March 20, 2008 for a promotional event.

As a salon owner, Powers’ career is centered-​around making the Tampa community beautiful. Powers has spent over 30 years growing generations of cosmetologists and this honor is indicative of her dedication to the beauty industry.

Shear Art Salon and Spa opened on April 15, 1986 with 450 square feet in the heart of Carrollwood Village. Twenty two years, six expansions, and 5,000 square feet later, Shear Art is a fixture in the Carrollwood community.

This salon is very, very, very expensive. My cut and color was $ 210. The service is very nice and my stylist was plenty talented. However, I nearly fainted at the bill. I’m happy with how I look, but have been happy at other salons as well — ones that charge a fraction of the price.

I’ve been coming to this Salon for several years now and they are consistently great! My hair stylist, Sara Altizer is the BEST and is always up for any changes I request as well as being at the top of her game on any trend! My hair has never looked this good!
I am a singer/​entertainer and need a fabulous look for the stage and videos and Sara has my hair looking glorious!
Each time I leave the salon, I feel like my hair is floating on air! I strongly recommend Sara and Shear Art!

I have been coming to Shear Art Salon for almost 5 years now. My hair stylist, Erin, is the best. She always does a great job and makes me look beautiful every time I leave the salon. The staff here is wonderful and sweet. I would definitely recommend this place to everyone I know!

Absolutely LOVE this place. I was referred here by a friend and haven’t gone anywhere else. My hairdresser is Felicia and she is phenomenal. I get color and cut ever 6 – 8 weeks and each time I leave I feel like a new person! I will and would absolutely recommend this place to anyone!

I went in today for my first facial treatment and was blown away! Tina was amazing, she was professional, personal, funny, sincere and very helpful! Not to mention GREAT at her job!
I actually had a good feeling about this place from the first time I called to ask about their services, the front desk staff was very helpful and polite. I was also pleased that I got a confirmation text for the appointment the day before and then a reminder the day of a few hours beforehand. Some people might not like getting the texts but for me it was a great touch and helpful.
During my time there, everything was great. I did not know what to expect but I was more than happy with Tina’s service. Everyone was friendly, smiled and said hello and we also conversed about silly little things as I was paying. I even asked Tina for additional business cards so that I may give them to my friends.
My face looks and feels amazing, I will 100% go back for another visit!!!

This review is for the massage services. Brooke is very professional and skilled. My husband and I are both clients for the deep tissue massage. We appreciate their soothing as well as pain-​relieving benefits. Brooke is a licensed massage therapist and I highly recommend her. Extra kudos for her assistance with our lower back issues.

Went to Shear Art today for the 1st time! Very nervous about going to a place I know nothing about as I am very picky with my hair! Called there at 5:45 and wanted to make an appt and they fit me right in and I was in the chair getting my hair done by 6:30 (I had a 35 minute drive) I was welcomed by the front desk staff and showed around the salon which I thought was highly professional. My hair dresser was Beanca. I HIGHLY recommend her! From the very beginning she told me exactly what she would do and how much each thing would cost and set my amount and assured me that she would do whatever it took to make sure I walked out of there with exactly what I wanted. I showed her a picture of what I wanted and she nailed it! Very talented and thorough! You can tell she truly cares about her clients. The salon closed at 9 and she stayed a good 30 minutes after closing just to finish my hair and still had a smile on her face.

I’ve only gotten my hair done here, never nail or spa services. The atmosphere is nice, typical semi-​upscale salon, clean facility. They give you the complimentary coffee & wine & all that. The stylists are hit or miss. I’ve had awesome & I’ve had bad. The front desk has a lot to be desired, not a strong emphasis on customer service. It’s an ok place.

I recently moved to the Carrollwood area from South Tampa and needed to find a new nail salon. Shear Art was my 3rd choice since the first two were closed on Mondays. I made an appointment yesterday for 5:15pm. I arrived at 5:10, checked in at the front desk then was told to have a seat in the waiting area and someone would be with me shortly. 5:50 rolls around and I’m still waiting for my appointment. The salon seemed somewhat busy on the hairstylist’s side but I did see 2 or 3 clients walk out with wet heads due to the fact that the person they were working with had moved on to the next client. After waiting close to 40 minutes I couldn’t wait any longer. I walked up to the front desk which was surrounded by employees who were about to leave for the day. The girl behind the counter looked as if i disturbed her and had a mouth full of food. I told her I had been here since 5:10 and she just looked at me like she had no idea what I was talking about. Communication between the front desk and the employees clearly is lacking. She could have apologized or even said that they can see me now, but none of that was done and i left. The salon looked nice so it’s a shame I wont be going back.

What I was really stunned by was the crap pedicure. I got a spa pedicure that was listed at roughly 45, with prices subject to change (sure, it’s a website), but I was charged 60 or 65. I can’t even remember. It was all too unbelievable. I was also kept waiting nearly 20 minutes (the woman was late AND just kept we sitting there). There was very little that was relaxing and spa like about the experience; it was all so basic. I will never waste my money on this nice façade of a «spa» again.
I’ve had my hair cut here a couple of times and each time was quite forgettable. I had to think hard about the stylists name, Cathy. The first time, some how she left tons of cut hair in, and after she was done, I went outside flipping and playing with my new hair cut and I pulled clumps and clumps of hair out. So gross.

My girlfriends & I decided to have a girls day out. Pedis & manis, well I will never get another mani from this place again. The manicurist made 3 of my cuticles bleed & was incredibly rough. She never even stopped when I was bleeding! Who does that? I had to tell her to stop. She acted put out when I told her to stop.

I had an EXCELLENT experience with Beanca the other day! I went in to have my new color lightened with hi-​lights. I tried to explain to her what I wanted, and she just took my vision and ran with it! The results were amazing! Beanca is a very focused and driven stylist who knows where she’s headed! And, it SHOWS! Amazing job, and I WILL go back!

Ask anyone who knows me, I’m obsessed with getting hair cuts.
And I’m a firm believer that finding a good stylist is as important as finding a good lover — although, let’s hope you have more interaction with the latter… and that you’re not paying them.
Here’s my match, and you’ll be lucky to have her as yours, too!
— Go see Sara Altizer (formerly Sara P.). She’s the one with awesome style and occasionally fashions her sexy tool belt fitted with every hair gadget needed to transform or update your look.
— Come well rested or risk falling asleep in their amazingly cushioned and reclined hair-​wash chairs.
— Know what you want or ask for suggestions. Sara is great at advising what would best fit your lifestyle and facial features, or just delivering exactly what you’re looking for.
— Always, always, always get a blow dry. The extra $ 10 is the key to learning how to style your new look once you leave the salon and not having to struggle with showering daily and then dreading styling your own hair… or maybe that’s just me.
So, forget «Great Craps» or «Fantastic Shiz» — schedule your next appointment with Sara @ Shear Art!

to be fair, let me make it clear up front that i’ve only seen two stylists at this salon. other stylists may not be present the same issues.
first stylist — saw her about 6 years ago. went to her for about 6 months before leaving. asked for some strawberry blonde color/​highlights mixed in with my usual blonde highlights. she spent about 15 minutes trying to figure out just the right shade of red to use, commenting that, because i’m fair skinned i wouldn’t want to go as dark as her (she was very dark auburn). fast forward a few hours: my hair was all one color (red) and it was darker than hers. she didn’t even acknowledged it — acted like this is what we were aiming for from the start.
it was after 9, they were closed already and i just wanted to go home after being there for over 4 hours. it was one month before my wedding and it took several salon visits (at a different salon, of course) to fix her mistake.
last year i decided to give the place a try again but this time with a different stylist. loved the stylist personally and she usually did a pretty decent job with the cut and just highlights, but then i told her i wanted chin length bangs (she gave me eyebrow length bangs) and that i wanted to bring out the red tones in my hair (she turned my hair a very dark burgundy/​wine color). again, she acted like this was all what i asked for at the start.
clearly, red is an issue — either with my hair or with this salon. either way, the fact that both stylists behaved as if there was nothing amiss about my hair led me to the realization that A LOT was amiss with this salon.
i won’t be back.

My friend was getting her hair cut and instead of just waiting, I asked if they had any pedi appointments available. It was a last minute request, so I was fine if they didn’t. Well, they said they did and started to take me back to the pedi area. Somewhere along the way, someone who either runs the place or has a lot of clout pulled the person who was going to do it and switched me to another person. Again, not a huge deal. However, when she did this, I overheard her say, «Just get whoever — it doesn’t matter — it’s just a glorified polish change.»
WHAT?! I should have pulled the plug right then and there. The «glorified polish change» she was referring to cost twenty-​nine dollars! I’m used to a full pedi for that price. I was left sitting in the chair for a good 10 minutes waiting for someone. The girl finally showed up and, the other woman was right. Glorified polish change. I got to soak my feet, had some lotion rubbed on my legs and she changed my nail polish. There was some shaping of the toe nails, but no scrubbing of the heels!
The polish job was terrible, I left with red paint on my skin. Worst pedicure of my life. Not only because it was less service than I expected, but the polish change wasn’t even good!
There was also a strong undercurrent of really catty women — — it just didn’t have that «nice» feel you expect at a salon.
On a positive note, the front desk girl was incredibly nice and friendly.
Save your money.

Ask for Valerie. She does amazing color and cuts. She’s fast, conscientious and knowledgeable. I wouldn’t trust my hair with anyone else.
A little pricey, but totally worth it.
