History
Established in 1989.
Founded by Susan Hunter Silverman, originally as a flea market based business, S & A Beads opened its first shop in 1990. After Susan’s death in 2006, her family took over the management of the shop. S & A Beads is famous for the variety of its offering, everything from children’s kits to ancient and highly collectible beads and ornaments; for its service; and for the outstanding level of craftsmanship and bead lore of its staff. In years past S & A had shops in Rehoboth Beach, DE and in Georgetown in DC. Today the business is centered in Takoma Park, MD, a charming and off-beat close-in suburb of DC. Our large web site at www.beadstore.com complements our brick and mortar location. S & A has embraced social media, spreading the gospel of ornamentation through Facebook, Instagram, FourSquare and other sites. In addition to a world class collection of beads and beaded jewelry, S & A offers classes and jewelry repair services.
Meet the Business Owner
Larry S.
Business Owner
S & A Beads was founded by Susan Hunter Silverman in 1988, with help from her then 12 year old son, Abraham. When Susan passed in 2006, her husband, Larry took the reins. Larry, when he is not running the shop and web site is an environmental attorney and activist and part-time professor. The General Manager, Emily Silverman, is Susan and Larry’s daughter, and an accomplished artist. She does almost all the buying and staff development. Abe, while not engaged in a day to day affairs of the business — he’s a very successful energy attorney — is still keenly interested in the business, and is particularly focused on the web site, beadstore.com, that he started many years ago. S & A has six incredibly talented, knowledgeable, and customer friendly employees, Great service and a large and unique collection of beads and gifts are the lodestars of our enterprise. We are a center for classes, jewelry repair, design advice, and fabulous beads. We also take consignments from great artists.
