Supernova Barber Shop

My boyfriend and I (I was moral support) went to this barbershop a couple a weeks ago. We came in originally and made an appointment and came back like three days later. It was an appointment at 5. We showed up at 4:45. That’s fine. We sat down an waiting. Now, you think with an appointment they would take you at your appointment time. They didn’t. He didn’t get seen till 5:20. They took walk-​ins before him, we even heard a barber talk about how he should not take the walk in because it was so close to the appointment time. Needless to say, my boyfriend finally got seen. He wanted a cut and beard trim/​style. He cut his hair fine, but his beard was a bad cut. He shaped it good, but he didn’t take his time. He was rushed because he «had an appointment.» So he shaved his face in spots but there were spots he missed completely. The whole experience was bad. He thought he finally found a barber that he would like, but we were taken back to square one. If you’re gonna go, you might as well walk in versus making an appointment because you’ll still wait as long, if not longer.

Other hair cut was great but the bear trim was the worst I have ever had when he went to line me up he cut it crooked and trimmed my mustache way to high it almost makes me want to shave it off its so bad

Got an awesome cut and shave (The Works) from Donny. A new and polished look now compared to the usual butchered, uneven cuts on base and other barber shops. This guy’s a perfectionist! A master of his art! Definitely coming back!

TL;DR – Great with kids and consistently awesome!
I went in for «The Works» and brought my 4 year along with me for a fade with a hard part.
While I was having my beard trimmed the ENTIRE staff at the shop played with my son, gave him a treat for being well behaved during his cut and helped him play games on my iPhone.
They did this all so dad (me) could relax. I mean what other business would be so kind and fun with a client’s child? This is literally what you can expect from these guys every time you go in.
Please make time to check them out. All outstanding people to be around.

I’ve been here once before for a beard trim and shape. The barber who did the work no longer worked there, so I had to roll the dice on someone new. This individual had me in the chair for less than 10 minutes. He didn’t touch my neckline, or my mustache. He didn’t stretch the beard out, he just put a comb through it a few times and made a few trim cuts to the outside.
The first time, I left this place feeling like a million bucks. This time, I literally felt like I just tossed $ 20 out the window. If I felt like they’d refund my money, I’d ask for it. I was pretty dissapointed.
That being said, the atmosphere is still cool, the music was good, and the free beer while you wait is always a nice touch. I don’t know the full story behind what happened to Derrick, but that dude knew his shit inside and out. Sorry guys, I won’t be coming back.

Do not go here, go to Buzzerds on 11^th instead. I had been getting hair cuts at supernova for six months. They were pretty good and then they became extremely inconsistent. To add to this Ashley, one of the barbers yelled «what the fuck is wrong with people today» when I turned around in my chair to face the mirror. Another barber called me «crazy» as I was walking out of the shop. Their rude, passive aggressive and unprofessional attitude is exacerbated by the fact that hair cuts are $ 25 and you need to book an appointment multiple weeks I’m advance. As a professor at UW I am going to make sure all my students know how I was disrespected, while simultaneously encouraging them never to go to Supernova. In response to the additional comment below. This shows the lack of respect and in ability for this shop to take responsibility for their own unprofessional actions. Ashley’s haircuts were inconsistent. Derrick never cut my hair at super nova. I’ll keep spreading the word about your poor service.

Easily the best cut I’ve ever had. Expert folks that send you out feeling and looking great. I’ve never had so many people actually stop to compliment my haircut.

I went here for the first time today and I couldn’t have been happier with the haircut Ashley gave me. She made me feel taken care of and she paid attention to detail. I really trusted her and her opinion. The vibe in the shop is awesome and I’ll definitely be a regular customer there now.

I’ve been looking for a good barber for a while, ever since my sister-​in-​law moved out if the state. Supernova has been one of the better places I’ve been to do far. Casual, relaxed environment with good music.
It didn’t necessarily wow me, but the quality and service were both definitely good for the price. I’d go back again.

Stellar. I walked in not knowing it was by appointment. They set me up with their intern and supervised his work. Many thanks to Derrick and the crew for hooking me up. I will most definitely be a loyal customer in the future. I wish it hadn’t taken me two years of living here to finally try them.
Visit number two: first scheduled appointment and I am pleased to say that as long as I live in Tacoma, I am never going anywhere else. Another great experience, another great haircut… they offer military discount but paying full price is worth it, because of the effort they put into their work.

This is a great vibe and the check in guy is always so eager to try to make things comfortable while we wait. However, despite the impressive staff ‘dos, was disappointed by the cut and shave my husband got. The stylist needed to blended more, check his work and also even out some long pieces. Perhaps it depends on who you get because the other stylists seems to always be checking and rechecking their lines.
The shave could’ve been closer since there were some dark patches where the stubble was left a little long.
Overall, the quality depends on the stylist. Not sure if we will go back again w/​o vetting the stylist before.

I just moved up to the area from San Diego and was in dire need of a new barber shop with competent barbers not just with hair but beards as well. That is exactly what I found here at Super Nova!
In my search I had called and stopped by many barber shops and it seems they all close around 6pm. This was a major conflict with my work schedule and wasn’t sure how I was going to make it happen. The next day I decided to leave work a little early and head to Tacoma. I began at Buzzard’s where they very rudely turned me away, then made my way to a few others down the street and none could cut my hair for one reason or another.
So, after being turned away by many other barber shops in the area I decided to make one last stop by Super nova and see if there was any chance they could fit me in. The time at this point was already 5:45 and I knew my chances were slim. The guys at Super Nova were very welcoming however, it being so close to closing they did not want to cut my hair. After explaining my situation to Derrick he volunteered to stay past his shift and hook me up with a cut.
Words cannot express my gratitude for this man and the others here at Super Nova not to mention my hair cut and beard trim was as close to perfect as it gets. Even though it was my first cut with him he knew exactly the style I wanted and nailed it. You cant trust just anyone when it comes to getting a beard trim/​shape but you can trust Derrick!
If you are new to the area or just looking for a more competent barber, look no further, Super Nova is the place to go.

Went here for a good beer trim and straight razor shave, ended up having to reshave around my beard because i had a close shave afterwards. Too much oils and creams on my beard and skin when I could of used a quick and precise shave.

Awesome place. They know what they’re doing when it comes to men’s haircuts and the price is totally reasonable. I’ve paid a lot more for haircuts that weren’t nearly as good. I’ll definitely be going back

Owners response to sitting in a lobby for over 25 minutes with nobody saying a word after a scheduled appointment was bc every single customer before our scheduled appointment was late.
Other establishments honor their appointment times and if they can’t, they let the customer know right away that they are sorry for the inconvenience. Letting a unscheduled walk in getting taken care of before a scheduled appointment is bad, inattentive business.
Responding with an excuse, rather then an apology shows you how this place is operated.
Appreciate your customers, give them the same respect you expect to have and apologize if you mess up. Don’t make excuses and justify bad customer service.

Make sure you make an appointment, because they are always busy. Cool atmosphere and beer while you wait, cant beat that. Won’t go anywhere else to get my receding hairline cut

$ 20 cuts includes a free beer if you want it. They take their time and cut your hair the way you want. Chill vibe and they do great work. Good and welcoming experience.
My barber Chip moved out but my secondary dude does aight work.

This place had so much promise. I bought a gift certificate for my husband for Christmas for a straight razor head shave. The hot towels they used and service great. They used a feather artist type blade. First of all the end result was NOT smooth. He only shaved with the grain. Everyone knows you have to go against the grain to get a smooth shave. Second of all it cost $ 30. But the shave was bad. It was past a 5 o’clock shadow feel. I want my money back! He is now reshaving his head as we speak.
Do not get a straight razor head shave here.

BEWARE THE BEARDED
They got my hair cut spot on, a clean contour with a nice fade on the sides…
However, that is where the positivity ends… As any man will tell you his beard is his baby and when you state you’re a Barber (variation of the French word for BEARD) one assumes you can get a beard trim and have your lines cleaned up. You EXPECT that the person doing this has done it before and will do it well.
Not the case! When all was said and done my cheeks were uneven forcing me to take them both down further than I liked. My mustache was hacked at with comb and clippers leaving it thin on one side, and my lines were not finished with a straight razor forcing me to have to reshave at home, which didnt end up mattering because it was all uneven and needed to be fixed by myself anyways.
In all honesty I think my biggest problem is that the person that I allowed to take care of my baby decided to hack at it like a hedge instead of tell me that they didn’t have the experience to give me what I wanted.
I appreciate the future attempt to appease me with a free visit to make all well, but before you do please bring proof you have trimmed a long beard and will treat mine with more care than my previous visit! Until that day I pray anyone with a beautiful full beard stay far away from your shop.
Like I said the haircut was good though, my neck got a razor taper and the contour followed my hairline well with a nice fade, had to fix the part a little but I’m very particular on my part that’s not his fault.

As I was sitting in the chair, all that passed through my head was, «what is THIS gonna cost me.»
My husband and I came to Super Nova on a recommendation of an acquaintance. We both left amazed at the experience. Neither one of us have had an experience like that since we were young boys. We both have had our hair cut at anywhere from Supercuts (as I hang my head in shame) to Jean Juarez and everything in between.
My barber Chip, was meticulous. I don’t know the first thing about cutting hair, but as he cut mine, it was as if he was cutting my hair to fit me.
«…And nothing beats being cleaned up with a straight razor.»
The level of customer service is seriously a step above. As stated in another review I was even offered a soda while I waited for Steve to be finished up.
To bring this back around to my opening statement… It was only slightly more than you would pay at the lower end chain barbers like so called «Super» cuts.
