History

Established in 1985.

Puget Sound Sailing Institute is an American Sailing Association affiliated sailing school that has been providing outstanding sailing instruction and other activities on the waters of the Puget Sound for over 25 years. From our locations at Tacoma’s Tyee Marina and Seattle’s Bell Harbor we offer classes, excursions, vacations, and a sailing club for people of all skill and confidence levels.

Our owner, Michael Rice has won ASA instructor 6 times and has logged over 90,000 nautical miles! He has instructed over 9,000 students since opening in 1985.

Puget Sound Sailing’s Owner/​Director Michael Rice has been awarded the prestigious American Sailing Association Instructor of the Year award an unprecedented SIX times, in 1997, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2004 and 2005.

The Instructor of the Year is given to 12 outstanding instructors out of over 3000 licensed by the American Sailing Association (ASA). There are 3 instructors honored in each of 4 regions in the United States. The award is based solely on evaluations sent back anonymously to ASA by students who are completing their certification.

Mike has logged over 90,000 nautical miles at sea and has instructed over 9,000 students. He has crewed in the Los Angeles to Tahiti Race. His sailing background also includes two Honolulu Transpac Races, cruises and offshore classes from Hawaii to the West Coast, races to Mexico, plus numerous Southern California and Puget Sound races.
