Baby Sign Language classes for parents that have hearing babies, toddlers, and young children. Our classes will teach you 100% ASL. (no made up signs) We offer sing and sign play classes for older babies and toddlers who know some basic signs. Play classes focus more on music and movement. My Smart Hands Tacoma also offers busy parent and educator workshops. We provide educators with onsite training with groups large or small. Skilled at training child care providers in home settings or daycare centers. Have a busy schedule? We also offer free videoconferencing and can train small groups or individuals online. (must have a web camera) Finally, My Smart Hands Tacoma offers private family tutoring sessions and mommy and me playgroup classes. Check the website for pricing info!

History

Established in 2009.

Ruth starting signing with her daughter, Lily when she was 9 months old. Wanting to know more about the benefits of baby sign language she found Laura Berg, founder of My Smart Hands (www​.mys​marthands​.com). Ruth became a certified MSH instructor and started teaching classes in Olympia, WA. She moved her business headquarters to Tacoma in July of 2009 after Ruth and her husband bought their first home. She loves being a part of this wonderful community and being able to teach parents how to communicate with their babies before they can talk.

Business Owner

Ruth Taylor Briggs has a Bachelor of Science Degree in Psychology from Pacific Lutheran University. She has extensive experience working with children in a variety of settings. In college, she worked for the Boys and Girls Club of South Puget Sound as a Program Specialist. She mentored students as well as helping them with their homework, physical education, and personal enrichment. After college, she worked as a Title 1 paraeducator in grades 1 – 4. Ruth is passionate about being an educator and loves enriching the lives of young children and their families. Children tend be drawn to her caring and energetic personality.

American Sign Language has been a passion of Ruth’s since childhood, when she taught herself the manual alphabet and other signs. She is proud to offer My Smart Hands baby sign language classes to Tacoma and surrounding areas.
