Foxes Inn

Holy wow. I’ve stayed in a fair number of B&Bs but this one might be my favorite.
We arrived and were immediately greeted and sat down on a couch and offered tea or coffee. They, we were asked about our breakfast preferences. They don’t mess around, the breakfast is an amazing two-​course affair starting with a light first course (scone, fruit, etc) and leading to a full second course, with many choices including bacon, eggs, potatoes, oatmeal, pancakes… they’re quite accommodating on preferences. Best of all, as someone who is not the most social in the morning, they bring it right to your room.
After all that was decided, we were given a brief tour and shown our room. The woman who ran the inn (I wish I remembered her name!) mentioned earlier that she had just pulled cookies out of the oven. About two minutes after we got to our room, she came back with a glass platter full of the most incredible chocolate chip-​chocolate cookies, still warm. OMG! I went straight to cookie heaven, I swear. An awesome start to our stay. We flipped on the fireplace and got comfy.
Which brings me to the next part — the room. SO cute. We stayed in the Fox Den, aka the cheapest room (but I would have picked it anyway, the décor is amazing). It was fully fox-​themed, with foxy wallpaper, pictures, coasters, and even a fox door knocker. Ha. It reminded me of an old-​timey smoking room — leathery chairs, dark wood, cozy fireplace, built-​in bookshelves. I’m considering buying a fake fireplace so I can recreate the look in my own house.
The bed was big and cozy, bathroom up-​to-​date, the shower was nice and hot, and it was spotlessly clean. I have literally zero complaints. As a really picky person (not unreasonably picky, just… high standards) the inn exceeded expectations on every level.
They also have a selections of DVDs and VHS tapes, cable TV, and board games.
Highly recommend!

We’ve stayed at the Foxes several times. Unfortunately the place has taken a noticeable dive with the departure of Wendy, their former manager. It seems like the new management has taken some visible shortcuts which is a turn off. When you serve bacon and eggs for breakfast, don’t serve just ONE slice of bacon. I did notice a small bit of litter during our last stay.

We stayed one night only, will stay longer next time. This was a delightful Inn, one of the nicest we have stayed. The staff, Heather & Rebecca, were a delight and so helpful. The furnishing are beautiful and the foxes scattered about are fun. We stayed in the Anniversary room, although not our anniversary. It was so spacious. We were given option of breakfast served in our room or in the garden. We had the option of time for breakfast made to order. What a treat. We ate in the garden as it was a beautiful morning, paper included. We were truly sorry to leave. However, we headed out to the «connected» winery, Helwig Winery. Very nice, beautiful views, award winning wine. We will certainly be returning.

We stayed here for the first time and will definitely be back. The Victorian room was gorgeous and quite luxurious! The staff was super friendly and the food was great! What can I say? We will be back soon!

Stayed on a Sunday night in March, in the Foxes Den, the lowest cost room if memory serves.
Parking is available at the back of the property – it took a couple of tries to figure out how to get to it, but we weren’t in a hurry.
The gal who checked us in was warm and helpful. The room was very clean and welcoming, with some interesting books to browse on the bookshelves. And there was a mini fridge! Since it’s in the wine country, the room was also stocked with wine glasses and a bottle opener.
Breakfast in the morning was SO GOOD, beautifully presented, and really big enough to cover for lunch as well. As quieter folks, we really appreciated the set up with breakfast served in individual rooms (or the lovely garden) instead of as a large group breakfast with strangers. We really appreciated the hike/​exploration advice as well – we had an amazingly lovely day following our stay, including a free tasting at (the stunning) Helwig winery. The inn is owned by the Helwig family.
The foothills in March is one of my favorite things, but the stay at the Foxes Inn just made it amazing.

My husband and I stayed at the Foxes Inn for his birthday. It was a great time. The rooms are quite large for a B&B and very clean. The breakfast was yummy. The best part about our stay was meeting Wendy and Renie. Very nice people! We would definitely go back.

If you’ve never stayed at a B & B before, don’t read any further. Go to this one– you won’t be disappointed. It’s a lovely B & B with wonderful touches.
I hate to be the first 4 star review, but 4 stars means, «Yay! I’m a fan.» Yes, I’m a fan of this B & B. But, I’m also a picky traveller, and have to give my honest opinion.
We spent 1 night (Sun) in the Blue Room. For $ 199/​night, I thought it was a great price. The Blue room seems to be one of their smaller rooms, but it was ample in size, and much larger than most standard hotel rooms. I would guesstimate that it’s about 400 sq feet. Huge bed with a Victorian canopy, high thread count sheets, duvet, pillow topper, lots of pillows. There’s a small refrigerator in the room with free water and soft drinks, as well as wine glasses and a bottle opener to sample your purchases from a fabulous day in Amador wine country (in my opinion, better than Napa Valley!). All the touches you’d expect and cherish in a great B & B– including 2 large chairs for reading, a small TV, ironing board, Keurig coffee maker, dining table, if you choose to have your breakfast in your room, A/​C…
There’s a large bathroom with an antique claw foot tub, as well as a small shower. The robes on-​line looked like plush white robes. However, they were thin cotton robes, and the blue towels, although plush, were a bit faded. Nonetheless, all the amenities you would need were stocked in the bathroom (hair dryer, vanity mirror, etc).
Note– if you have trouble climbing stairs, I would not recommend the blue room. It’s upstairs. Also, to get onto the bed, you step on a wooden step stool, which my husband tripped on that night going to the bathroom.
Pro’s:
— Beautifully appointed antique pieces in the room.
— Private entrances to most of the rooms– great if you like privacy.
— Location– right on main street. It’s fun to walk around town and enjoy a short stroll to dinner (we ate at Sutter Hotel).
— Wonderful area to browse, wine taste, jog, eat ice cream and cheese (great cheese shop down on Main Street), gardening store, antique stores… love this area (Amador Co)– another must stop– Taste restaurant in Plymouth (about 20 minutes away?), Worth the drive!
— best part– breakfast is made to order and served directly to your room or on the outdoor patio, at the time you specify. Yeah! They have a half dozen or so different breakfast entrees to choose from. The first course is a fresh fruit cup, along w/​juices/​coffee/​tea in real tea cups. The main douse offerings included: french toast, chile relleno (more like a casserole type thing), strawberry crepes, loaded oatmeal, eggs Benedict… served with your choice of breakfast meat (we chose the chicken sausage). Ample, filling and beautifully presented. One of my main gripes in staying in a B &B is having to wake up early to go to a community breakfast during set hours. This option of having breakfast alone, in your room or on the patio, at a time you choose is awesome. One of the best things about this B & B, that distinguishes it from the rest.
— Beautiful little garden with water features and wonderful areas to read and relax, private free covered parking, clean grounds, non-​smoking.
— Super soft toilet paper. Definitely not the Costco stuff. Not sure why this made such an impression, but the softest, plushest TP I’ve used!
Con’s– the Pro’s definitely outweigh the cons, but here are a few suggestions:
— the gal upon check-​in seemed a bit rushed. You could tell she was not the owner. One thing that sets B &B’s apart is the service, maybe a little more welcoming and friendly.
— fresh herbs at breakfast– this is a must for a 4 star establishment (not dried herbs)
— a larger selection of DVDs
— an explanation of the fox theme would be nice, strange to see foxes around, but not know what they represent.
— although clean and well-​maintaned, rooms could use a better dusting. Spotted a few cobwebs.
Overall, a 4 star experience. I have no hesitation in highly recommending this B & B– looked like the best B & B in town, aside from possibly the Hanford Hotel, which seems a bit more modern (haven’t stayed there, so don’t know). If you enjoy antiques and want to choose your breakfast time, this is a wonderful option for a clean, relaxing, pleasant stay. Please support local business and stay here and shop, play and eat in Sutter Creek. Great little trip from the Bay Area, Sac, etc.

The Foxes Inn was outstanding. Stayed there for my pre, day of, and post wedding night this err den, July 18, 2014. Renie made our stay extra special and went over the top to make memories the We will never forget. Thank you sooooo much and we will be back.

An Extroardinary B&B that I cannot wait to visit again! the entire experience from start to finish was perfection. the Inn is gorgeous and meticulously maintained with some remaining original aspects, such as the original parlor doors and floors. We stayed in the Honeymoon Suite and it was spectacular. It was romantic, cozy, spacious, and the bathroom was just renovated and perfect. Breakfast was excellent and you can schedule it to be delivered at any time in the morning; the staff is extremely accommodating. Every morning we had breakfast on the porch listening to the birds chirping.
the staff is lovely and the «happy hour» is a real joy. This is truly a place that is loved and well-​cared for and the staff is happy and extremely customer-​oriented. And the location? perfect.
You will NOT be disappointed. It was a very romantic and peaceful spot for us and we couldn’t have enjoyed it more.

We stayed in the Blue Room. It was a very special experience. Large room and bathroom. Very comfortable King sized bed with canope, and steps to get into the elegant oversized bed. This B&B has great attention to detail. Gardens were beautiful. Staff was exemplary. The breakfasts, served in our room precisely on time, were truly special. When I got home I even ordered one of their bathrobes from Telegraph Hill Bathrobes in SF. As other posts, location is great to local restaurants and businesses. Downside has nothing to do with this inn. Restaurants in the general area mediocre, and over priced. Be forewarned. Bring prepared meals. Frig in rooms, and microwave in the main house. Full meal set up (plates, utensils, wine glasses, etc.) in each room. Decent pizza place closeby.

My wife and I originally booked a room for three nights at the National Hotel in Jackson, but kept looking on Unilocal and saw the Foxes Inn. Sounded really good so we changed our reservation to the Garden Room at Foxes. Great move.
For starters, the town of Sutter Creek (where Foxes is located) is far, far more interesting than downtown Jackson. Great wine tasting, some fun shops, good food, a fantastic cheese shop (something to go with your wine?), and a cool outdoor equipment shop. Foxes itself is a treasure. The Garden Room is in an «Annex» right next to the main house. Super comfortable Queen bed, great gas fireplace and a great view of the garden from the breakfast table. Breakfast? Oh, yeah, it is excellent, and is served to you in your room.
All the gals in the staff were friendly, helpful and efficient. Fresh brewed coffee in the rooms, fresh baked cookies all afternoon in the main house. Pretty hard to beat for around 200 bucks a night.
Maybe a little spendy for Amador county but considering what you get, well worth it.
If I could give 4.7 stars I would, because the wireless connection basically didn’t work in our room. Works great in the main house, and I shouldn’t really have been trying to keep up with work emails on our weekend away anyway. I could do what I absolutely needed by taking my laptop into the living room in the main house – fresh brewed coffee there also…

Excellent! My hubby and I had a great stay at the Foxes Inn. The staff was very friendly and welcoming. We had a cozy, clean, quiet, room. We stayed in the Foxes Den room. The towels & sheets were amazingly soft. The fireplace was romantic.
We loved the location right on the main street and enjoyed walking right to many wine tasting rooms and restaurants. It was nice we didn’t have to worry about driving while we were there and could enjoy the wine.
The breakfast served in our room was so yummy. So many nice touches! We plan on coming back in the future and making staying at the Foxes Inn a tradition!

We love the Foxes Inn. They think of everything. The rooms are so great you feel at home. At home in a very NICE home.
I can’t think of one thing they haven’t covered. I thought I had when I made a request for ice but there it was, right in the fridge in a silver bucket.
You can walk to anyplace you want to go in town. The locals are so friendly! We meet people we like everytime we go.
For women, there are two great places to shop. For men, wine tasting, interesting little shops, a good used book store a short distance to the next town. Lots of benches in Sutter if you want to wait while your wife is in a shop. My husband takes a book and is happy as can be. Lots of people watching as well from those benches.
But back to Foxes. The breakfasts are cooked by an angel. I can’t explain how she can make scrambled eggs taste so great, but she does it. There are many more exotic choices. It’s a full breakfast, not the usual at B & Bs. ALL the staff are upbeat, act like they love their jobs, helpful, friendly and go out of their way to make sure your stay is perfect. Which ours was many times.
These people know how to do it.

Just enjoyed our third visit, now some 15 years in all, the staff and facility as good as ever, breakfasts beyond belief, quiet, and of course, close to the great wineries of the Amador area. Best memory is the staff: most helpful and ever ready to assist. We have plans to come back next year and while the wineries change, the Foxes remains the place to stay. Robert F.

The building, the parlor, the rooms, the bed, the amenities, the food, the staff, the location – everything at the Inn is fantastic! I’ve been to many excellent hotels all around the world, and I count The Foxes Inn among the best.

Okay, I’m a bit of a spoiled traveler. I expect good customer service, clean accomodations, all of the amenities you can dream up, and a great rate. This being said, I love The Foxes Inn. My husband and I just returned from FI celebrating our 27^th anniversary. This was our second visit and we loved it even more this time. We even had a carport space to protect the ride. The new owners are The Helwig Family and they didn’t change a thing. The staff are superb! We toured their new winery and cave up in Plymouth, WOW. It is amazing. Of course the cave is the most impressive I’ve seen. We also attended the concert Sat. Night. Again, WOW. The ampitheatre is top of the line.

Loved, loved, LOVED this B&B. (And not just because I’m nuts for foxes :3)
Went there for our first anniversary. First the staff was very friendly and recommended several local places (we hadn’t been to Sutter Creek before). The lady even surprised us with dinner reservations on 2 seperate nights, and we enjoyed both dinners.
Secondly, the room. Big comfy cozy bed, adorable fox-​themed décor, a little fireplace, a cute vintage-​style bathroom, TV with cable. I personally loved the little bedside visitor’s book… there were passages from people who just got married, who were celebrating an anniversary (including silver, gold and diamond!), or who were just passing through and wanted to share some warm thoughts. And, of course, a delightful breakfast served in-​room each morning.
Thirdly, it’s centrally located in ‘downtown’ Sutter Creek, near everything interesting. It also has lovely grounds. I noticed on return trips to Sutter Creek that they decorate the garden and trees for various holidays. Just an absolutely darling place!

This was the first time staying at a bed and breakfast. We were given two nights at the Foxes Inn in Sutter Creek and we will be returning in the future. In fact, our experience where convinced us that we prefer the «B&B» accommodations rather than a hotel. The Inn is absolutely beautiful. The parlor is open during the day and guests are given a key for after hours. The parlor has freshly made cookies and coffee/​tea service all day. There are seven rooms at the inn. We stayed in the Garden Room which was beautiful. The room was nicely furnished and had its own fireplace (which was a treat because it was cold and raining when we visited). The bathroom had a number of nice amenities including nice soap, shampoo, and conditioner, makeup removing towelettes and cotton balls and Q-​tips. Each morning of your stay, you choose a cooked-​to-​order 3-​course breakfast from the kitchen’s menu. The chilie rellano and French eggs were delicious (main dishes) and the fruit cups (course two) beautiful. Breakfast comes beautifully presented, in courses and with a silver coffee/​tea service either in your room or in the garden. The food is great and the accommodations are beautiful and romantic (not to mention very private). The staff is warm, welcoming and friendly and the service is impeccable. This experience definitely changed our minds about whether to stay a hotel versus a bed and breakfast.

The best b&b in Amador County hands down! It’s a four diamond resort and it is exactly that! The attention to detail is amazing!

We thoroughly enjoyed our stay over the Thanksgiving holiday weekend. Our room, the Foxes Den, was nicely appointed and the bed was very comfortable. The two course made-​to-​order breakfasts were delicious (Swiss eggs, yum!) and served in our room. The complimentary cheese and fruit plate, and water and soda are a nice touch. We enjoyed a horse-​drawn carriage ride through town – courtesy of the Inn. Wine tasting at any of the forty wineries near by and exploring the historic towns near by are great ways to spend the day.
