The City of Sunrise is the first city in South Florida to install Little Free Libraries in its municipality. This one was installed back in February 2013 as part of a service learning project by students in the Sunrise Leadership Academy. The Little Free Library movement started in Wisconsin in 2009. By installing little bookshelves in communities, the«librarians» hope to promote literacy and the love of reading, as well as a sense of neighborhood, by building free book exchanges worldwide. The concept is «Take a Book, Leave a Book.» You are welcome to drop off your gently used books, and to help yourself to anything that catches your fancy. It’s a library with no late fee! This one, built right by the playground in the park, is in a great location. I can imagine parents and children checking out the books, after an energetic hour in the playground. However, there doesn’t seem to be a lot of usage though. Most of the time I pass by the library(repurposed from a newspaper stand) is rather empty. Hopefully more people will discover and use this little gem!
