History

Established in 1908.

The Sunnyvale Public Library got its start as a Reading Room organized by the Women’s Christian Temperance Union on September 14, 1908. On May 7, 1914, residents of Sunnyvale presented a petition calling for the creation of a public library and bearing the signatures of 177 residents (¼th of the electorate at that time) to the town’s Board of Trustees. The Board of Trustees approved the request, and the Women’s Christian Temperance Union formally turned over the 1,100 books in the collection to Sunnyvale on December 14, 1914. In November 1917, the Sunnyvale Board of Trustees voted to participate in the Santa Clara Free County Library system. In 1956, Sunnyvale voters passed a bond issue to build a new library. In October 1960, the City of Sunnyvale ended its contract with the County Library, and in November 1960, moved into the current location on Olive Avenue, sharing the facility with City Council. Subsequent building expansions occurred in 1970 and 1985.
