Klub K9 Play Center

Professional professional professional! I am SO impressed by Mike and team. Don’t be fooled by the gruff exterior, but it’s clear he has a heart of gold. He has made some great recommendations and our pup always comes home happy. I like that there is both indoor and outdoor areas. All of the staff is extremely friendly, and I’m really impressed with their efficiency.
My ONLY complaint, barring me from posting 5 stars is that the cameras to view the dogs are extremely outdated. I would love it if they just bought Dropcams or upgraded their cameras. I love watching my puppy have fun! Now, I’ll grant that I would much prefer they have proficiency in doggy daycare over surveillance systems, but Dropcam makes it SO easy!

Truly enjoy seeing my now 4 month old lab puppy play and socialize with other dogs at no cost! Our trainer recommended Mike and his team as they are local and have a very sanitary facility compared to others that we have seen in San Jose. If you plan on taking your puppy here every Sunday from 11-​noon, get ready to have a good time and meet/​connect with puppy owners!

I have been bringing my puppy (a year and half) here for almost a year and I just love this place! I really appreciate that each dog has to pass an evaluation and that the owner, Mike, takes the time to ask questions about your dog. Because he is very thorough I knew that my dog would be in good hands. Penny took a little over 2 weeks to fully adjust to the new daycare (we were previously at the Pooch hotel) but now she runs inside and can’t wait to go play with the other dogs. I love that I can watch her on the webcams and see how much fun she is having.
She comes home so TIRED and literally falls asleep on the way home, which is the best feeling for me to know that she had an awesome day. I also love the staff! They all know me and my dog and make me feel very comfortable leaving her there. We love Klub K9!

At first glance, the owner seems extremely knowledgeable. The place is clean, well staffed, good workflow for services, etc. In my experience, everything ran great for a couple of months.
Then the manipulation starts. In short, the owner wants you to pay for private classes. He won’t tell you this though. I actually wanted private classes, but instead of offering his services, the owner tries to make your life more and more difficult until you somehow read his mind and write him a big check. In my case, my dog began getting banned for ridiculous reasons. First, «dog harnesses cause your dog to become overly protective» and «the way you live with him is the problem». Mind you, he’s never been to my home and has no idea how I live with him. Banned from puppy social. No recommendation on what remedies could be explored. Fine, write him a letter and ASK what we can do to remedy the problem. Now, he finally tells me he wants to do private training. I happen to be going out to town, so I tell him I’ll do it a month later.
In the mean time, I continue doing daycare at Klub K9. Two weeks later, on the same day that I bring a different collar to drop off than I ever did before, «The prong collar causes fearfulness. Banned.» No recourse offered. No recommendations. Just banned. At this point, I’m certain my business is deliberately being discouraged. I used our prong collar that we’ve always used, but had never brought to drop off before. Everything was fine until he found another reason he could use as a ban.
He’s supposed to be the professional, so for all I know the decisions weren’t bad in and of themselves, but the manipulation is unacceptable. Learn how to speak instead of trying to manipulate people. In the end he tried to lie and say he did actually over his services. Why lie? He seems to be inept in communication and then tries to hide the problem. I wouldn’t be surprised if he has some form of Asperger’s combined with insecurity (the lying). Either he has such a disability, or he’s a shady abled business owner, and that’s sad because I had such a high opinion of the place.

When I moved to the bay area from Los Angeles I went from a house to a condo. My dogs are not used to being home alone in the house during the day and I knew that I had two options — day care and dog walking.
We tried the dog walking thing, but my dogs were not overly excited to be left home alone and… to be honest… don’t know how to hold it for more than a few hours at a time. So day care quickly became the only option.
I will say I am a veteran of doggy daycare. My little dog, Molly, went to day care each day in Los Angeles when she was an only child and I lived in an apartment. Her love of day care had no limits and she would cry in the car when we arrived. So, rest assured, I’ve got a handle on what a dog day care should be like.
I searched all over Sunnyvale for a dog daycare that I felt comfortable with before finding Klub K9. Mike is serious about his business, but in the best way possible. I feel safe knowing my dogs are in his staff’s dedicated and knowledgeable care. The simple crying Molly did when we arrived at day care in Los Angeles were NOTHING compared to the literal SCREAMING she does now the second my car goes into park at Klub K9. Molly is a judgey dog who hates the dog park, so I know that Klub K9 is a good place because she has deemed it as such.
Obviously, this is my opinion and mine alone. You should do your own research and find the place that fits best for you and your dog… and your wallet!

I am still deciding if this is going to be my boarding solution. My dog seemed to like it, but I’m not so sure I do!
Mike seemed very thorough about his business, which I initially appreciated, but after my experience I wondered if he just likes enforcing rules.
I came in for a temperament evaluation, which is supposed to be free. Instead of passing or failing, my dog got a conditional pass. Mike asked me to come in on a separate day to do one final evaluation with my dog in a group with other dogs.
He did not mention there would be a charge for the «rest of the evaluation.» Miscommunication happens, I accept that. What really got on my nerves was that we went over a 17 page packet with all his rules and rates but there was no mention verbally or in the packet about a situation like mine. I assumed it was a continuation of the evaluation, so it was free, or else it would be mentioned in the 17 page packet we went over.
When I came to pick up my dog, he said he did fine and asked if I wanted to keep him there for a full day and inquired how I wanted to pay. I told him I did not expect to pay. He apologized for my misperception and took my money. It left a bad taste in my mouth.
My thought is if your standard process does not fully evaluate my dog for your services, perhaps it is not thorough enough. In addition, all customers like expectations set and met, so I would want to know my dog is a special case and it will take a daycare day, which is $X, to do the full eval.
The last thing that annoyed me was that I tried hard to be diligent, read the rules, and follow them. Mike was chomping at the bit to find something I missed. Upon taking my dog for the day, he abruptly commented that my dog needed to have his name on his collar. It took him 0.5s to notice that the collar did have a name; he quickly corrected himself but no benefit of the doubt was given :-(

This is a long overdue review. Klub k9 has a very professional and no BS kind of service. Mike knows what he’s doing and my lab Pebbles wouldn’t be so happy to go there if it wasn’t true. I’ve tried the boarding, the day care, the puppy social and even the training. The best part is, he reiterates that the learning process in training isn’t just in the dog but in the owner as well. Be warned though, he is a pretty straight to the point kind of guy, and not everyone can deal with that. But I personally think it’s best that way. After all, Pebbles starts getting jumpy with excitement before we even turn the corner into their lot. Nothing makes him as happy as being with the Klub K9 team. I would recommend to anyone looking for a fun, cage free boarding/​daycare place.

I have been bringing my dog here since April and have been very happy. This was doggie day care number 6 for us and I was almost at the point of giving up on finding a place that made us both happy. I had brought my dog in for the evaluation almost 6 months before starting as I was a little concerned with all the rules and regulations. Since coming I see that all these protocols are in place to ensure that my dog has as successful an experience in his time there as possible. Mike (the owner) and his team are very knowledgeable in caring for dogs and it definitely shows. My dog is a big boy and he has lots of room to run around. He’s also used to going in and out at home and I love that he has that option here. The staff is very good at reading dogs and know when they need to step in to correct a situation before it escalates. None of the other centers my dog attended did this. When he runs to the gate to go inside I know that I’ve chosen the very best center for both him and myself. HIGHLY recommended.

I’ve been bringing my dog Alan here for both boarding and daycare since 2012. I appreciate how the packs are structured and dogs are treated like dogs. Alan is a rescue and can be very nervous at times, but because Mike and his team «speak dog» Alan is able to thrive in their care. It means a lot to me that the staff is well educated in canine behavior, Mike has given me tips which have helped Alan be less nervous. Great establishment.

This is a great, locally owned place to leave your dog when you’re on vacation, etc. They don’t waste anyone’s time with the useless, pricey options found at the national pet stores (e.g. PetCo, Petsmart).
They also offer reasonably priced medicines that you can administer yourself!

Klub K9 is a no-​frills, canine-​focused operation with a lot of heart behind the care provided for your dog. Mike and staff believe strongly in natural canine behavior — so much so, they have their human «pack» trained as well as their canine pack! The rules for boarding and daycare are strict but that’s all for the well-​being of the dogs, who roam free in several play areas amongst similarly-​sized dogs during the day and sleep on individual bath mats at night. (For the elderly, there are raised beds, too.) You can watch your dog on the webcams at any time.
Plan to bring your furry friend in for an evaluation before being allowed to join for daycare or boarding, which ensures that — if your dog IS approved — he or she will be amongst other dogs whose behavior has been vetted as well.
The staff remembers every single dog and welcomes you warmly when you arrive for drop-​off and pick-​up. I’ve been bringing Baylor here for over two years and feel extremely comfortable leaving my little, old dog with Mike and crew. Highly recommended!

We were extremely satisfied with the level of service here. Very spacious and super knowlegble and caring staff, which is all I want when I trust someone with my four-​legged best friends.
The place is secure and the protocols are rigorous — which is what a lot of the negative reviews point out — but it’s all in the name of safety, for both dogs and owners, as well as staff. And again, that’s all that really matters here, not your feelings or how you usually do things at home or when you take your dog to the mall.
Rates are competitive and the location is convenient. Will book again.

Our rescue dog has some separation/​kennel anxiety, so it’s wonderful to find a place that is cage-​free and supervised ²⁴⁄₇. We’ve been using Klub K9 for daycare/​boarding services since we adopted her (late 2013). She has stayed here long-​term while we went out of the country twice last year (April & December, ~11 nights each time), and it’s reassuring to be able to spy on your dog via webcam even though you are thousands of miles away ;).
During her first long-​term stay she did drop quite a few pounds, probably because she is a picky eater, was in a new environment, went from getting 1 hour of exercise a day to 12 hours of running around, etc. The second time, we provided some wet food to mix (+ upped amount per meal) and she came out just fine. I think they bathed her as well because she smelled remarkably good for having mingled with dozens of other dogs for over a week.
The staff have always been professional, friendly & responsive, and seem knowledgeable about doggie behavior. Also, major props for not being weird/​discriminatory about bully breeds unlike most of the other places I’ve called.
My dog seems to have a good time and is always super excited to enter the facility. She’s never been dog-​aggressive, but does seem better socialized as well (as we notice when we take her to the dog park).
As this is a cage-​free facility, accidents can happen — our dog injured her hind leg while playing one weekend and we narrowly escaped a $ 5,000 surgery. The staff was attentive however and separated her from the main pack, and let us know what had happened when we picked her up.
We’ve moved from Sunnyvale to the east bay so it’s a further drive, but we are still long-​term boarding at Klub K9 since we haven’t found anything quite as good in the area :).

I brought my beagle here for 11 days and as far as I can tell she loved it. My boyfriend and I really enjoyed being able to watch her play around with the other dogs on the webcams — gave us peace of mind and put to rest any worries that she wasn’t in good hands.
Only downside would be that it seems she may have a cold, but being around so many dogs, I can’t get mad about that. She may just be super exhausted. She’s old and used to a pretty lazy day :)
Regarding the comments about the owner being rude, I can’t personally agree with that. I thought he was always very kind and friendly. He loved my dog and she loved him.
Overall, I’d recommend Klub K9.

I have a rescue pup who I spent everyday/​all day with the first 6 weeks I had her. Once I started going into the office again, I spent time choosing daycare. My dog has issues with other dogs, and would squeal and run in the opposite direction or yip and cower in between my legs. I told all day cares that she was bad with other dogs, but she still passed their temperament exams so they allowed her in. Other places threw her right into the mix, and in some cases muzzled her so it worsened her problem. Klub K9 has a puppy program, where she spent the first part of the day with a German Shepherd who is good with this kind of thing, and the dog spend 40 minutes patiently waiting for my dog to get over her fears. I saw a video of them playing together which is the first time I’d seen her do that. They then ease her into a play group with other smaller dogs.
The free puppy social on Sunday’s is great too. The owner and a mediator are in the room as well as the German Shepherd mentioned above to supervise.
There are strict rules about the pick off/​drop off times but given how I saw other places with riled up dogs, their nap time system seems to work really well. I am paying for them to keep my dog safe, so I prefer the strict rules.
There are a lot of negative comments about the owner and how he is rude. I have yet to feel that anyone there is rude to me. I think that if you have high expectations about customer service with a smile and the mindset that the customer is always right even when the customer is being difficult /​incompetent, you may be unhappy. If you want a place that tells what you they are going to do, do what they say, and tell you what they did, no BS then Klub K9 is a great place.

I’ve dropped my dog off here a couple times:
I left my fixed female trained labradoodle (poodle/​labrador mix) here for a week. We took her to kennel and explicitly told them and paid EXTRA for them to brush our dog. She had a full body fleece coat at the time and it was essential she was brushed or she would matt too severely and she would end up with rashes and it becomes painful causing her to chew at herself. She came back with such awful matting that we had to shave all but her ears and she had noticeable hot spots where the mats had been tight and pulling at her skin. Why didn’t they try harder to brush her though? I would have paid extra just to know they put in the extra effort.
We took her back a while later and we thought it might be okay because she was basically entirely shaved. She only had some fluffy ears and so I forgot to explicitly tell them to blush her fleece coat ears. As a result, she matted so badly from them allowing other dogs to bite and hump her that we had to cut out giant clumps of fur. It matted so close to the skin that it’s cruel to know they never tried calling us while we were away to ask if the extra money to brush her was okay. The fact that they didn’t do anything for her is just wrong. I can’t believe they found this acceptable, she had what looked like feces also stuck in her matts along with likely sperm from other dogs. I’ll never ever return here. They don’t care about my dog here. I’ll take my dog to the nicer pet hotel down the street when I go on vacation…

I am very disappointed with this visit, not because my dog didn’t pass their interview, but the people’s attitude there. Well, our dog didn’t like him and was barking at him. That’s normal, dogs have personality, and it happens. We brought our dog to dog parks and groomings all the time, and he was friendly to people and dogs all the time
This guy was behaving like he is the boss and all the dogs must like him. He was not even try to be friendly to our dog, and even put his foot towards our dog’s face. Very bad experience!

After a couple months of unemployment and spending every single day with my newly rescued pup Jackson, when it came time to go back to work and choose a Doggie Daycare, I did a lot of research on where to send him. This place came as a recommendation from a friend who has been sending his dog to Mike’s place for the last 5 or 6 years. After reading some of the more negative reviews here I was definitely a little nervous, but I figured there was no harm in at least setting up a temperament visit so I would have the option if I wanted to (especially since the place is less than 2 miles from my new office).
The day of the temperament visit arrived and off we went. Mike was excellent about explaining what the visit would entail, what they were looking for in terms of my pup’s behavior, etc. He then outlined the daycare rules, guidelines, etc. Now, I know a number of people have made comments about how Mike is a bit rough around the edges, however I appreciate that he is honest and upfront about his expectations, and he is a no nonsense kind of guy (which being from the North East Coast, I relate with immensely). He definitely runs a tight ship, but I respect that as dogs work best with structure and schedules. After the visit, which my little guy passed with flying colors, I immediately knew that was going to be the best place for him. He started daycare the following day.
Almost two weeks later and it has now gotten to the point where the minute we pull into the parking lot and get out of the car, it is like I don’t even exist. Jackson runs to the door, impatiently waits for me to open it, and then he practically pulls my shoulder out of it’s socket as he runs to be let into the play area. Then he forgets about me except for a brief 3 minutes when I pick him up and he is so excited to see me, before he promptly passes out from exhaustion on our drive home, only waking up for some dinner, before passing out for the rest of the night.
Every time I pick him up/​drop him off Mike and his staff are pleasant and welcoming. Plus less than a couple days there and they had already given Jackson the nickname of Little J, which I just found endearing.
The pricing of services, if you do the Membership Packages, is quite fair. I take my dude in 4 days a week (one day he gets to come to work with me), and I bought a package of 20 visits for $ 500. Its certainly not cheap, by any means, but compared to some of the places in the area, and especially those in the city, its practically a steal (especially since it means you dont have to worry about the dog chewing up priceless items at home).
All in all, it is GLORIOUS and Jackson will be coming here for years to come.

They are very strict about the rules here. It can be quite challenging in that regard, especially with the pickup and drop off times for the dogs. However, that being said, the reason they do that is to make sure the dogs are not disturbed while they socialize each other and to give them a routine, all things which are very necessary for the well being of some dogs, especially mine.
The only other daycare I’ve taken my pup to is Spots in Santa Clara, which is the polar opposite of this place — you can drop off and pick up 24 hours a day, without prior reservation or warning. While that is extremely convenient for me, I really see a difference in my dog’s behavior now that he ‘s going to Klub K9. He and his roommate dog (my roommate’s dog) are both very happy and eager to go to day care and I believe when they come back they are more well adjusted. Mine in particular has always been friendly with other dogs, but shy (the run away shy kind, not the aggressive shy kind). After taking him to KK9, puppy is more confident around other dogs and is not upset about leaving me to go to daycare. I love the webcams too — it’s great being able to spy on my buddy while he’s hanging out with his crew.
My roommate and I had been considering asking Mike to come in for some lifestyle balancing training with our dogs, and Mike was understanding and accommodating about us taking a while to make the decision. Looking forward to updating this review after our upcoming lifestyle balancing training session later this month.

Prices on supplies are pretty good on a lot of items. Not so good on others.
I went in to check this place out– got ignored by staff. That’s fine, I didn’t need any help but you’d think most businesses at least acknowledge people.
I walked outside to the parking lot, to look around. This place is in the back lot for some other places – looks like an industrial plumbing shop and some other light industrial/​manufacturing shops.
I was standing well away from the wooden fence beyond the parking stalls and near what looks like fire risers – I’d say about 30′ from the fence. One of their employees pops up over the 7′ tall or so fence and says I’m too close to the fence and I’m making the dogs upset. I said I’m nowhere near the fence and the girl says «oh really guy?» in a sarcastic voice.
Lousy attitude. But reading the other comments about the owner, it’s no longer a surprise.
