The Feed Store

I went to The Feed Store for the first time last Saturday morning. We were looking for straw for our garden. I was amazed by this place. Not only could you get bales half or whole of straw and hay for $ 11 but the amount of gardening items for half what you would pay at places like Menards or Home Depot. They have all you would need for your own urban farm. Not to mention birds galore, chickens and the pet variety. The people are knowledgeable and very helpful. I am a born and bred apartment dwelling Chicagoian who moved to the burbs 5 years ago. It is the first time in my life I’ve had a back yard and been able to grow a ever expanding garden. Thanks to finding straw at The Feed Store, weeding will be less and the water bill smaller. The Feed Store is now my go to place for half of my gardening supplies.

I visited today to buy some Neatsfoot Oil and noticed instantly that there has been a lot of cleaning and organizing done in the store. It feels much more spacious, especially the area by the horse care items. Keep up the great work!

I do not have pets.
I do, strangely enough, have a need for bales of hay and straw on occasion (what girl in the city doesn’t?). For $ 10 a bale, it’s the closest place I can find to downtown Chicago to fill my farmer needs. In a former life, did have pets — rabbits, horses, dogs. If I still had said pets, this would be my jam — everything you need for any kind of animal.
And I love the smell of a feed store.
Right off of 55, it’s a quick trip from downtown if you can pick a time without Chicago traffic (good luck)

If you own an animal, they have food for it! I go there for food/​treats/​bones for my dog but they have all kinds of specialty feed and supplies and they do sell animals there also (I saw mostly birds). The salespeople are very helpful and knowledgeable. They have been there forever! Definitely worth stopping by.

This place is great. I used to live right down Harlem from here and would get things for the yard.
Their prices are amazing. I have a red bellied parrot that goes through a decent amount of food and is picky. I can customize what food she gets and get about 4lbs of food for less than a small bag at the pet store.
Everyone is super friendly and helpful every time I’ve gone.

I could not wait to get chickens and after a year of research I could not wait another day. A few days after Christmas I started looking for chickens, all the places that usually sell them, but they do not carry them until the warmer months so we stopped at a place my boyfriend heard of many years ago and, YAY, they were still there! The Feed Store was the only place to have baby chicks (that markets well because I was even looking for hatcheries but no luck) and they were so adorable. These chicks were my first and we got 4 of them. I have had them for 8 weeks now and they are great, the only bad thing is that 3 out of the 4 are roosters and we got them for laying eggs SO the roosters have to go. So much for 90% sexing accuracy! Though the employees were nice, they were NOT knowledgeable about were the chickens came from, if they had gotten any shots for different types of diseases BUT our chicks were all bright eyed and active, 2 had dirty vents but we took care of that, and no one had mites or flees. The regular feed they sell is non-​medicated (different from organic) but I can’t find anything like that around me without spending a ton of money. Their food and water trays are about the same in price or a little cheaper than other stores.

Yes, this is how I want to be treated upon walking into ANY retail store. This place is cute!
They have EVERYTHING from potbelly pig feed to bullion sticks to animals. I believe I saw ducks here.
Get your supplies and harnesses, feed, etc! The staff is the friendliest. Always a pleasure.

Wonderful! I love this place. I’m Indiana born and raised — that’s a state where they have something called FARMS and LIVESTOCK and FEED STORES :). Feed stores were a normal everyday thing to me so when I stepped in here I felt like I was right back «home» :) Its funny how you get to miss a simple thing like a Feed Store but let me tell you, you do. I love that it’s a family run business and they talk reeaaalll slow, which always make me feel like I’m not in Chi town anymore and ya gotta love that.
Awesome and excellent. If you have kids you should def take them here so they get a feel of what’s it like to NOT be in Chicago for a bit. They have chickies and rabbits and all kindsa feed here plus very knowledgeable about bird feeders and such. Great people; great store; hope they are always around.

This store has feed for many animals along with birds, chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits and many other things. I buy my dogfood there as it is high quality and priced right. The people there are very knowledgable about everything they sell. Love this place.

We got some chickens from here– the baby chicks were nice, and the adult roo also very nice, but the roo was infested with chicken mites which we unknowingly brought home and infested all the rest of our chickens and our cats and parrot and guinea pigs (All *indoor* animals that wouldn’t be exposed to parasites otherwise). It took our vet a while to figure out the specie and hundreds in treatments to eradicate the infestation. I won’t risk going back there again!

I really want to like this place more because they do have an interesting mix of supplies and the people are friendly and seem to know their stuff, but it seems kind of dark and dirty in the back where the chicks and other birds are.

I love the Feed Store. I dropped in last fall to pick up some pumpkins/​corn stalks/​etc and found so many fun and yummy things for my dogs. They have any feed you need. Premium dog foods — wet and dry, cat too. All sorts of bird feed and any other feed you want in sacks all over the store. As far as dog treats, I get the different types of jerky, pig ears, bones, and assorted treats by the pound. Collars/​leashes/​harnesses galore. They have chickens, pigeons, ducks, and assorted pet birds in the back. All for sale. Rabbits too, all kinds. Always friendly, no-​nonsense service. Competitive pricing. Hard to find items always available. Mom n Pop.
Just off I55 and Harlem, easy in and out.

Amazing experience so close to the city. For anyone with exotic livestock or affinity for birds of all types this is the place. Stepping through the door is akin to stepping into an old country store back in the 70’s somewhere in mid Nebraska. The old wooden building smells of farm feed and supplies and you quickly find yourself sifting through endless bags of various bird feed. Wind your way around to the back room where you can get your hands on chickens, pigeons, rabbits, ducks, turkeys and cockatoo’s. For those interested in trying your hand at urban farming this is your one stop shopping.

If you want a unique place that has EVERY kind animal food there you can think of. Family run for years and the service shows. they are very friendly and greet you right away and get you started on the right path.
Its a little out of the way for some folks, but its def worth the drive, but call first cause their hours can be a bit odd.

I walk in, they guy holding the door for me what I need, and I tell him about how I just moved to OP and have some new feeders and want some better food than what they have at Menards. He says, they can’t get cheaper than Menards, but they were pretty comparable as far as I could tell. And here they even carried the bag out to my car.
The guy was a wealth of knowledge, and helped me pick out a good thistle feeder that the squirrels won’t destroy, hopefully. Only thing was I wish I could have browsed, but I didn’t say I was ‘just browsing.‘
Definitely will be back.

I happened across the feed store after moving into the neighborhood just NE of it (Forest View). Driving down Harlem, The Feed Store is located just south of I55 on the west side of the street. They have their own farm-​y looking parking lot.
Upon entering the feed store I suspect you’ll be cheerfully greeted — as I have been the last three times I was there, by no less than three people all asking if I needed any help, etc.
The feed Store has an amazing amount of animal food & feed! If you have the pet, they have the food (& the pets… more on that later):

Cat Food
…way too much to list!
So far I have bought Bird Food, Wild Bird Seed, and even grass seed to repair my lawn. I think the prices are competitive and I enjoy the information they provide regarding birds and seed. I even had a strapping young man carry my bag to my car for me… nice.
Animals!!!
If you would like to raise some yard egg laying chickens you can find them here very affordably! They seemed to have a couple of different breeds as well as ducks, homeing pigeons, carrier pigeons, dove pairs, parakeets, finches, and bunnies! They will encourage you to ask your municipality if you might have 2 – 3 chickens in your backyard for eggs. (You do not need the rooster for this & Chickens are quiet w/​o the rooster).
If you have a free afternoon stop by the feed store and checkout what they have — you forget how close you are to the city… until one of the young men says: «oh no, the chickens are out on Harlem Avenue again!»
