Specialties
Dr. Cox specializes in psychotherapy with people who are depressed and/or anxious. Many of his patients cluster into 3 groups:
1. One concerns men struggling with the stresses and pressures of daily life, especially mid-life issues. These problems are often worsened by a traditionally masculine approach to dealing with emotions. Intense focus and hard work don’t usually fix emotional problems. Counseling is designed to deal with troubling emotions while improving relationships and decreasing irritability and depression.
2. Another specialty area concerns the high percentage of heart patients who experience depression, which can interfere with rehab and with treatment compliance. A short course of psychotherapy can reduce the symptoms of depression and improve quality of life.
3. Another concern is young adults who experience a «failure to launch.» Focusing on the emotional blocks to moving into adult life, therapy improves self-image and formulates concrete steps into adulthood.
History
Established in 1979.
Dr. Charles Cox has been in private practice of clinical psychology since 1979.
For about 25 years, he did much work with children, adolescents, and families. He consulted with special education programs of area school districts, through psychological evaluations, psychotherapy, and program design.
Dr. Cox has consulted in several programs. He served as a consultant to a pain management program in the Texas Medical Center. He also consulted in an in-patient weight loss program and in an in-patient geriatric psychiatry program. For several years, Dr. Cox served as a clinical supervisor in a psychology intern training program.
Since around 2004, Dr. Cox has restricted his practice to older adolescent and adult patients. This change was necessitated by the vagaries of age and energy level. Content with this change, he finds that many ideas and concepts learned from working with younger people apply developmentally to older folk, too.
