We carry a wide range of subjects including military history, first edition children’s and illustrated classics, modern first editions, leather bound sets, with more than 30,000 books in stock. All our books are «bearly read» used, antiquarian, rare or hard-​to-​find.

History

Established in 1990.

Betty Ann Sharp and Jim Ellis took over ownership and operation of Bearly Read Books in 2007. They bring with them a diverse background in literature, education, technology, entrepreneurship, and writing. They will happily assist customers in finding any books they may be looking for. If they don’t have it they will happily add your book to their list of books to watch for.

Business Owner

Betty Ann’s fascination with collecting began at the age of 10. My first book that I bought with my own money was a Mother Goose book illustrated by Eulalie Banks. I’d always been fascinated with Mother Goose rhymes, memorizing as many as I could. But what intrigued me was the different interpretations of the rhymes by the different illustrators. Since then, I’ve added some real gems including first editions illustrated by Jessie Willcox Smith and Kate Greenaway.

Jim and Betty Ann run their open shop together, although Jim also has another full-​time job. They enjoy helping people find just the right book. Customers have taken photos of themselves with books they’ve purchased at the store that have been just the right book for that special gift.

Betty Ann and Jim also have a great respect for the collector. It doesn’t matter the subject. They have folks that collect books on aviation, specific campaigns in WWII, anything to do with the 1970’s and pop-​up books. There are so many people
