We walked in without a reservation but were able to join a food/​wine pairing experience right away. Their wines were pretty good. The tasting experience was phenomenal. The tiny appetizers paired perfectly with each wine and brought out different parts of the wine each time. The owner gave us a history of the winery (only been around less than 2 years!) and did an excellent job walking us through each tasting. We will definitely be back for this experience and to taste their wines in the future!

By far the best tasting experience I’ve had in Fredericksburg. They take the time to educate you on the wine and then pair it with a bite of food so you understand why it works with certain foods. In addition to the awesome education, the wines are fantastic as well. They’re still fairly new and it will be great to see how they grow! Dogs are welcome on their patio if you’re stopping in for a glass to sip on instead of a tasting.

My husband and I made an appointment for a food and wine tasting on a Saturday afternoon. The winery was much quieter and more relaxed than other spots, which meant we had a genuine tasting instead of fighting for a spot at the bar. The gentleman who served us had an expansive knowledge of wine, and entertained us with anecdotes about the vineyard. The wine was delightful, especially the Kankar, and the food pairing was delicious. We will definitely come back and recommend it to anyone who wants a more intimate tasting experience!

Compared to the other wineries in the area, the experience offered by Kuhlman Cellars is simply among the best. Everything from the tasting room to the lounge to the employees attitudes were perfect. I cannot say enough good things about my experience here.
I came here with my partner and her parents and we did the food pairing option as this was a unique offering for the Fredericksburg area. The reservation process was easy and they didn’t rush people into their seats. They took their time walking us through the wine and food pairings which made for a lovely afternoon of tastings. The wine was good, the food was better, and the sommelier was extremely knowledgable and engaging. He knew how to share his time with the group of eight while still creating a unique educational experience that involved the guests. He was a true master at his craft and created a very enjoyable experience.
Overall, I would highly recommend the wine and food tasting that this winery has to offer guests. Compared to many of the wineries in the area, this place had a lower key, family feel to it that was very different from the commercial, get the people in and out mindset that others in the area seem to exhibit. Everything about this winery was pleasant and highly desirable.

Love this place. Been here a couple times, and everyone is very nice and informative. They focus more on the wines, and less on their club, which I really appreciate. The wines are awesome. The food pairing is impressive.

Consistency… can’t say it enough!
I was delighted to read through all the other reviews, verifying that our initial great impression of this team has been echoed by every other reviewer here. While we had previously joined several other local wine clubs, we’d invariably find ourselves dropping the memberships after a decline in quality. That is most definitely not the case here! Their amazing winemaker keeps coming up with new blends and varietals (like a Texas Zinfandel, and Cinsault Rose) to keep us looking forward to our next visit.
While they remain by appointment, they have added an additional building, reserving the original tasting room for their paired tasting experience while making a wine-​only option available for those seeking that.

We had higher expectations for this place. They required a reservation and we made one. When we arrived it was unorganized. There were not many people there but service was lacking. We did our tasting and got out of there. Maybe just a bad day there. We will give it another try.

Lovely tasting room. They pair wine with food. Not a meal but a tasting of food and wine. Great way to enjoy wine. And they can accommodate any dietary requirements if you give them a heads up… vegan, vegetarian, etc. and the wines are really good. Their grapes are still growing on their estate so they use grapes from Sonoma County and blend some delicious wines. Check it out. Sophisticated but not snobby.

Visited Fredericksburg this past weekend for the first time and Kuhlman Cellars was definitely the highlight of the trip. I love Napa and Sonoma and the tasting experience at Kuhlman rivals the great wineries in the California wine country.
Jeremy was our tasting host and he is fantastic! Super knowledgeable, funny, and overall great part of the visit.
The wine was some of my favorite in the area, but the chef tasting that goes with each course of wine is what really sets this place apart from others. The chef is so creative and what he has done for each wine course is so unique and truly an awesome experience for your mouth. Do yourself a favor and book ahead so you can do the chef tasting with the wines!
Bought 4 great bottles of red and two jars of the marcona almonds. Delish!
Will make this a stop anytime we are back in the area and will tell everyone to make this a must-​do on their trips as well.

This was the first winery I stopped at during a wine tour of Fredericksburg and it set a bar so high everyone else looked terrible! Ambience is lovely, the somms actually care about your experience and the wines, the food sampler was INCREDIBLE and the wine was excellent. I can’t wait to return!

The only place we found that not only walks you though the knowledge of each wine, but pairs each wine with food. Amazing and intuitive. Jeremy was friendly and brilliant. The BEST in Fredericksburg! Kuhlman Cellars puts the other wineries here to absolute shame. The facility is gorgeous, the wines are superb and the food pairing creates a synergy that raises the bar to a level that spoils anyone who walks through the door.

Kuhlman Cellars is everything you could want in a Texas winery: a lovely view, great wine, and knowledgeable staff. The tasting is a bit more than other wineries ($ 20 per person) but worth every penny. The food pairings, a fun and much needed addition to the central Texas wine scene, are designed by a Houston chef to complement the wine and turn the tasting into an even more delightful experience. We made a reservation but I learned while there that you can walk-​in and taste the wine (sans the food pairings) whenever they are open. I would gladly go back.

Kuhlman Cellars opened their Stonewall location last fall so they are new to the Fredericksburg wine scene. Their location is designed for couples and small groups of people. I think only 10 people can do the food paring at a time. There is a seperate area if you select wine tasting only. The outdoor seating is covered and overlooks their newly planted vines which will start producting grapes for wine production next year. All thier wines come from various locations within Texas.
You have the option of only doing a wine tasting or you can do a wine tasting with food pairing for $ 20. If you buy a bottle, I bought 2, you get $ 5 off your entire purchase. The food pairing will take about 45 minutes and features food created by high end chef out of San Antonio.
You will learn everythning about Kuhlman Cellars during the food pairing. Soil make up, the French woman who is the wine master at Kuhlman Cellars, wine growing locations, care of the grapes and the different wines and foods are just some of the things you will cover.
Kuhlman Cellars had 3 white wines and 2 red wines when I visited. They will make 5 different wines per a growing season. The actual types of wines will depend on the growing season so each year will produce diffent verieties of wine. Their red wines are produced in French oak barrels while their whites are made in steel vats.

I was a bit skeptical at first, as I like drinking wine more than hearing someone drone on about tannins and notes of blackberry. However, I’m glad I took a chance because our guide was knowledgeable and down to earth — even talking about which wines pair with potato chips.
The hors d’oeuvres were outstanding, including a lychee nut and a strawberry rhubarb tartlet. See picture.
There was a sign by the door mentioning reservations, which was a turnoff for me, as I prefer a more free-​roaming experience. However, the manager told me that it’s very seldom anyone is turned away — if a tasting is full, guests are typically seated on the patio.

A new tasting room located just outside of Fredericksburg. While the tasting room is a new addition to the winery tour the vineyard has actually been around since 2012. They coop’ed with Pedernales Cellars. They opened a beautiful tasting room last October and have taken wine tasting to a whole new level. Each tasting is done by small groups and each wine is paired with a type of dish prepared by a executive chef. Dont worry, you’re still going to want dinner. They not only review each wine in depth but they explain the paring process with a bite size food item. The tasting will last approximately 30 to 45 minutes. I recommend you have an appointment during peek season. Parents, we all love small children but I encourage you to find a sitter.

A warm welcome to a top quality winery in Texas! Owners Chris and Jennifer Cobb have staked out their claim on the growing Texas wine industry with focus on quality and experience. And trust us, after you’ve visited this place you’ll be talking about it to your friends, family, neighbors, third and fourth cousins as well as your uncle that only drinks beer. Chris and Jennifer got their start by experimenting at home with grape vines. They also have a test plot of one acre vines just north of Fredericksburg. Long story short, their experiment has now grown into their own winery and soon to be planted vineyard estate in the beautiful Texas Hill Country. The fifteen acre estate is located in Stonewall and is named after the Kuhlman Creek, which runs nearby and has a great view of LBJ State Park. Pedernales Cellars has been helping them with the initial batches of wine production. The focus on quality not only comes from the owners but by the winemaker, Bénédicte Rhyne, as well. For Kuhlman Cellars, Bénédicte focuses on French style wines. And from what we can tell, she takes the ‘Q’ in quality quite serious. If there aren’t available grapes for what she wants to make or the grapes aren’t up to high standards, then the wine won’t be made. No sense in making something unless the fruit meets the criteria. You’ll notice the persistent focus on quality in the wines you taste here. Everything from the whites to the reds is just excellent! The experience really kicks it up with the chef prepared food pairings that have been carefully created and hand crafted for each wine. The right food with the right wine during the right season makes all the difference in the world in wine tasting. This just isn’t a cheese and cracker plate pairing, but carefully selected items from a professional Chef such as strawberry with goat cheese, pumpkin mousse with a cranberry sea salt, and smoked salmon with cucumber just to name a few. The food pairings puts the ‘B’ and ‘C’ in balance and compliment. It likewise helps individuals realize the accessibility in how to potentially work with the wines to pair them with dishes and allows you to really see the difference when tasting a wine and then pairing it with the accompanying item to see how it showcases and enhances the experience. During your wine tasting session, your Sommelier will talk with you about each wine’s character and food pairing. This kind of wine tasting really is an exceptional way to enjoy the wines. For whites, the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc is strongly aromatic with lovely apple notes. The 2013 Calcaria is a blend of Chenin Blanc, Semillon, and Sauvignon Blanc. It has a honey-​suckle aroma with a bit of a mint flavor. The 2012 Roussanne has a great golden color, apricot notes, and just taste really, really good! For reds, you’ll enjoy the 2012 Alluve. Sourced from Sonoma, it’s a blend of 59% Carignan, 22% Petite Sirah, and 19% Grenache. The Carignan was sourced from 100 year old vines… yes 100 years old! This is one of those quality dry reds with good depth and a fine velvety finish that puts that big smile on your face. Last, is the 2012 Texas Red. It is a blend of five grapes, with most being Merlot (49%). Tart, rose petals, floral, and earthy… just to name a few sensory notes you’ll get from this wine that you just have to come and taste. These wines are definitely a cut above the rest! Everything is enjoyable and nothing will be discarded. You’ll notice as you drive up to the winery that they have a trellis system in place on the estate. The property is divided into five blocks for planting with about seven acres all together. Plans are to plant Mourvedre, Aglianico, Carignan, Roussanne and Marsanne. There are additional wines currently in the barrels and new releases planned for 2015, with four being Barranca, Kankar (Malbec/​Perire Sirah blend), Merlot, and a Zinfandel. We got to try the Barranca and it shows great promise as a superb red and can hardly wait for that to be released. Wine releases may change a bit, so stay tuned to their website for updates. A newbie to the scene, Kuhlman Cellars offers a unique intimate Texan wine experience that you won’t find elsewhere along the 290 wine road.
It all started in Chris and Jennifer Cobb’s small family estate vineyard with 9 rows, a different varietal per row (Viognier, Vermentino, Tempranillo, Mourvèdre, Aglianico, Alicante Bouschet, Syrah, Tannat, & Carignan). The winery is named after the creek that starts at the base of the estate. In 2012, old world French winemaker of Ravenswood fame, Bénédicte Rhyne, joined the team. They focus on utilizing Texas sourced fruit for the majority of their wine, and utilize French Oak barrels for their reds, and stainless steel tanks for their whites. They produce five proprietary blends each year. They decided to build their production and tasting room facility in Stonewall, along with plantings of Roussanne and Marsanne. In Oct 2014, they opened their doors, and we are now able to experience and taste the journey with them.
The wine tasting room is open Friday, Saturday and Sunday, and reservations are suggested. This is not the typical frenzied, loud, crowded, and unknowledgeable tasting room. For $ 20 per person (you can share your tasting with another), you are able to taste five wines accompanied by a chef prepared food pairing (changes seasonally). You are led through the tasting by a knowledgeable and friendly sommelier, this taste journey typically takes 40 to 60 minutes. All the serving staff are sommeliers, or the owners themselves. They will drop $ 5 per bottle purchased from the tasting fee.
My husband and I had the delight of being able to squeeze in without a reservation at the end of the day and be served by the owner at the tasting table in the production room. I noticed immediately that this place was different, it’s set up to encourage 1:1 conversation with your server, but without any pretentious wine snobs. It was interesting how the white wines highlighted the food, but the food highlighted aspects of the red wines. All five wines were above the typical past Texan standard wine. They were dry, not the typical sweet/​fruity sensation, full bodied, well balanced tannins, and complex. My favorites were the 2013 Sauvignon Blanc, 2012 Roussanne, and the recently bottled Barranca (takes the Alluve to the next level). The 2012 Texas Red is also delightful, and the fruit is sourced from Pheasant Ridge (Bobbie Cox’s vineyard). The bottle prices are inline with other Texas boutique wineries. After tasting the wine, meeting the great people, and learning about their labor of love, I couldn’t help but want more great moments with them, and joined the wine club without hesitation. The highlights of the wine club is that you can select what you receive in your shipment, the typical discounts, and great member events. If you cannot make the drive out to Stonewall, you can find their wine in Austin at Dai Due, and once you sip the magic, you will be planning a trip to go visit.
Tip: they sell their handmade Herb de’ Provence Spiced Marcona Almonds by the jar, and you can take the empty jar back to get it refilled for a lower price. Like a nut growler.
