History

Established in 1987.

Replay Records was originally founded in 1977 in Modesto, California by Michael Maxwell; back then, of course, it was all used vinyl lps and some cassettes. Stores soon opened in Manteca, Fresno, Sonora and Stockton. fast forward to 1992. Store manager and local musician Willie Hines buys the Stockton locale just as compact discs have become the new standard. Laserdiscs, then dvds add to the inventory, all the while with the emphasis on records, which remains to this day.

Born and bred in northern California, I am a music afficionado as well as a local musician. I love to help people get reunited with their favorite music and maybe turn them on to something new every now and then. Variety is indeed the spice of life, and at Replay we go from Abba to Zappa in six seconds. Music is life!

Great record store, the only record store in Stockton now really. Willie has been providing a great service to the music lovers in Stockton. I am so happy Replay was around in my formative years as I was introduced to a lot of bands then that I still continue to love. The staff at Replay has always been friendly, informative and their suggestions are always spot on.

Replay Records is a staple in the Stockton area. If it hadn’t have been for Willie’s establishment I would have remained unaware of the wonders of vinyl records. When you walk into Replay Records you are not treated as a customer, but as a friend. The service is wonderful, the selection is amazing & the prices are extremely reasonable. I have learned a lot about music from my perusals in Replay & would suggest ANYbody with a love of music to visit & enjoy the greatness that is Replay Records.

I’ve been going here since the 8th grade (1991) Even though the location has changed a bit through the years, the bottom line is the same – this is truly a record store «for the people». Freindly and invinting, with everything laid out well. Knowledgeable staff, who aren’t pretentious. No corporate ad-​bombardment like you get in the big stores. It is a smaller space but filled with goodies! They will pay you FAIR prices, !!!RASPUTIN WILL PAY YOU PENNIES ON THE DOLLAR FOR RARE VINYL!!! Boo, Hiss!!! I have bought and sold here throughout my life but now I live in the Bay Area and truly miss this gem. Keep up the good work REPLAY and I will visit when I can.

I take my Floridian son here when he’s in town. He too is an urban musicologist. We enjoy looking thru the R & B, East Bay funk, and EW&F cd’s. Sometimes we find a cool jazz CD. This guy has everything folks and if he doesn’t have it, he’ll call you when it comes in… great place to renew & recycle your old music for new stuff. I have a friend that deals in old vinyl and Cd’s and he loves talking music with the owner. Hearkens back to Freitas Records downtown on S. San Joaquin St… if you remember that place your old like me. That’s where many quarters from my allowance savings ended up to pay for my 45 addiction.

my favorite record store in northern california. i know you’re supposed to keep hush hush about out of the way spots if you’re an avid collector, but i’d rather a few more people know about them and they stay in business. willie is a great dude, with great prices, and an amazing selection. shit that would be twice as much at amoeba and wouldn’t last there for a day.

Replay Records is an oasis in the wasteland of Stockton. Though not the biggest selection, the music available reflects quality over quantity. Willie Hines has forgotten more about music than 98% of us will ever know. His knowledge is encyclopedic. I’ve passed more hours than I can count talking about music with Willie. If he doesn’t have what you’re looking for, he will get it for you. Replay and Willie are needed in Stockton — SUPPORT THEM WITH YOUR PATRONAGE! Small business is the backbone of America. Down with the corporate running dog carpetbaggers in Lincoln Center.
Visit Replay, enjoy a chat with Willie, and find that tune that’s been running around inside your brain. It’s there … waiting for you.

Oh man. This place was incredibly small, but it made my drive through Stockton a little more pleasant. The selection of records is pretty small, but there honestly is something for everyone if they look hard enough. I looked through the small crates of seven inch records at the register and found a lot of obscure emo stuff for less than five bucks. I purchased a lot of it for my own collection, but I also sold a bunch of other stuff on eBay for a whole lot more after I realized the bands weren’t that great. This will definitely be one of my stops when driving through the area.

Whenever I happen to be visiting the post office next door, I make it a point to stop here at Replay Records. There is always something in the DVD section dying to come home with me. Unless I’m looking for something totally unusual, sometimes they will have it. I actually found a fresh pressed Kraftwerk vinyl here. Maybe not a big deal to a lot of you but I about wet my pants when I saw it.
You can sell your stuff here too. They even still have cassettes here too! Tons of vinyl… visit Replay records! It’s been a gem of Stockton’s for a very long time!
