History
Established in 1920.
The Avenue Inn was opened during prohibition, in 1928, a period of economic prosperity for Stockton. Down Stockton was packed with luxurious hotels, and stores, and a street car system that rivaled San Francisco. Stockton, like many cities also had an underworld that supported brothels, gambling halls and bootlegged liquor.
The Avenue Inn openly violated the laws of prohibition. the Polk’s Stockton City Director of 1928 reads, «Avenue Inn, Cigars, Tobacco and Soft Drinks.» Many former Saloons and bars claimed to serve only soft drinks, while operating full liquor bars open to all. It is well known that local law enforcement and public officials during this period turned a blind eye to illegal alcohol and prospered from the soaring profits.
With the end of prohibition in 1933, the Avenue Inn legally served alcohol, being one of the first establishments to obtain a liquor license, tobacco license and firearm license, a virtual one shop.
