Shaw Orchards

Had the loveliest time this past weekend. I’ve explored a lot of different farms in MD/​PA/​VA the last few years, and this is by far my favorite. We came specifically to pick raspberries, but we already can’t wait to return in the fall. The staff was so down to earth and friendly, the orchards were lush (and yes, the raspberries are amazing), and I just liked the overall attitude — rules aren’t posted everywhere and they do a thorough, non-​chalant job of helping their visitors. I guess b/​c they aren’t overrun with visitors, they can exist this way. As a decent citizen, it is nice (and increasingly rare) to go somewhere where you are left alone b/​c it is assumed you’ll do the right thing. I frolicked up in the apple orchards and by the beautiful sunflowers after picking raspberries (oh the variety! oh the different tastes!) and could easily hop on the tractor trolley back to pay for my raspberries and shop the rest of the market. Thank you, Shaw. You gave us a memorable Saturday!

What an absolute gem and don’t let the PA address fool you! This is a Maryland farm through and through — they support the Real Food Farm in Baltimore, they sell at the Govans Farmers Market and they supply fruit for state meetings upon request!!!
The staff is so super friendly and beyond helpful! Jana, the owner, is the biggest peach you will meet (and yes pun intended!) She goes above and beyond for her customers and that means a ton!
Overall, it is so important to eat seasonal, local fruits and vegetable not only because you are supporting a local farmer but because the money stays in the community and the produce is sweeter, juicier and more delicious!!!

10 stars!!! Shaw’s is wonderful. I’ve been there with my kids, my boyfriend, myself, a few field trips tours. They do it right here. Friendly knowledgable staff and fresh reasonably priced produce. I love to take my kids picking for berries.

My boyfriend and I went here last year to do PYO apples. We were pleasantly surprised by the set-​up. There’s a cute country market at the entrance with all kinds of food (and lots of fresh produce) to buy. For apple-​picking, they provide you with baskets (not every place does this so make sure to check before you go). After a short tractor-​pulled wagon ride, you’re left to roam the fields of apple trees. There were a ton of apple trees and when we went last year (mid-​September), there were plenty of apples on most of the trees. Returning wagon rides back to the main lot ran periodically, maybe every 10 minutes or so. We had a great time and ended up with approximately 30 lbs of apples– way more than we could handle so many were shared with friends and family! The check-​out process was quick and service was very friendly.
Additionally, there was a small pit beef stand next door that had sandwiches for about $ 6. They were very large and tasty!

Lovely small farm. Friendly people. For my wife and I this was the best place to pick blueberries this summer in the MD area. We look forward to going back next year.

This review is specifically for their pick your own blueberries. I guess I had high hopes going in because practically every year growing up we’d go blueberry picking and leave with overflowing containers of obnoxiously fat and sweet blueberries. I still make the hours long drive back home to do so. It was not only fun but easy — the branches would be overgrown with the purple goodness that they’d hang down in your face begging you to pick them off and relieve them of the berries weighing them down.
I did my research ahead of time and checked Shaw Orchard’s «Ripeline» which stated «Our Blueberry picking is still going strong. The last variety (on the top row) is now ripening with the largest berries in the field.» Excited about my prospects, I made the 55 min drive up to the PA line to get started right at 8AM when they opened. Well, I call bull about what their Ripeline says. When I arrived, I instantly knew I had been mislead about the state of their crops. Even the lady who greeted me said the blueberries were very picked over. Not off to a good start.
Fast forward 2+ hours later and I finally decide to call it quits. I made it out with maybe 5 lbs. of blueberries for a whopping $ 3/​lbs. Woah. A bit pricier that I expected, but fine — it is what it is. The real kicker to all this is now that I’ve begun baking with them, I’m finding out just how un-​sweet they are. *sigh* Way to kick someone when they’re down.
