History

Established in 2014.

This time last year, Norenna, Donia, and I were just three middle-aged women having drinks and discussing what we had wanted to be when we grew up, and where our lives had led us. Just outside my window I could see the old, shuttered bar that my great-grandparents and great-great aunt and uncle once owned, where my grandmother tended bar, and where everybody raised their families. The house I own was hers, and my grandfather built it. After several glasses of wine, we realized the answer was right in front of us – let’s buy the bar! And so we did. Renovating a 90-year-old bar proved to be quite a challenge, but we did it. Good food, good drink, and lots of lively conversation — that’s what you can expect from Amici’s. — Owner Sherry Newquist

Business Owner

Sherry Newquist grew up surrounded by her Italian family – literally. There’s a baby picture of her sitting on her great-grandmother’s kitchen table, surrounded by adoring aunts, uncles, and cousins, to prove it. All that time with the Italian relatives clearly had an impact – there’s nothing Sherry loves more than drinking, laughing, talking, and, of course, eating. In her book, a plate of spaghetti and a glass of wine, preferably accompanied by the laughter of friends and family, can cure anything. A graduate of Marian Catholic High School and a lifelong resident of Chicago’s South Suburbs, Sherry left just long enough to get her BA from Eastern Illinois University, followed by an MBA from the University of Chicago. After 27 years in the financial industry, she decided to pursue her dream of opening a restaurant. Inspired by her family’s passion for life and for food, she hopes that good food, good drink, and lively conversation will be a common bond for everybody who visits Amici’s!
