Staten Island Zoo

Came here for idnyc. was really surprised how much this zoo has to offer. I saw leopards and surprised they were there for such a small place… saw farm animals. horses goats and pigs. and a whole slew of snakes the place is packed up with some great exhibits. def will be back when the weather is warmer.

The zoo is small, but has a nice assortment of animals. In fact, for people with small kids (like myself) the size of the zoo is not a problem (kids would get tired going through a large zoo with tons of ground to cover). The animals are nicely kept and pleasant to look at. Kids had fun!

many fun things for kids in addition to looking at the animals. The variety of zoo inhabitants is pretty large for such a small zoo. Animals and cages are all clean and look well kept. Peacocks and other birds that freely roam the park add to the fun of walking about.

Took a day trip to Staten Island recently to visit some landmark food places we heard about from friends, and on the way in we saw a sign for the zoo and took a quick detour. I’m happy we did. This is a cute little zoo that is well-​kept, animals look healthy and taken are of, lots of space in their manmade habitats and cages, and the variety of animals and exhibits is quite nice for a fairly small zoo. There was a little kid’s birthday party going on next to the gift shop, which is basically just a counter of items in the very small food court. I wouldn’t say this is a zoo to go way out of your way to visit, but it’s a nice neighborhood and borough zoo for families and adults alike if you’re in the area or know of a specific event/​exhibit they’re offering.

, because the SI Zoo itself is pretty weak.

Chaperoned my daughter’s class trip today, I’m so glad the rain came pouring in last night to cut through the humidity. It was pretty quiet, we were the only school visiting the zoo today. Not a whole lot to see, but enough for these preschoolers to go crazy for a couple of hours.
We were able to see a bunch of peacocks roaming around freely throughout the zoo, some farm animals, small exhibits including monkeys, a leopard, and a variety of reptiles, surprisingly the snakes were the kids’ favorite? There were adorable props and sculptures for photos along the way, which we stayed forever and ever trying to get a perfect shot of all the classmates looking (almost had it…).
Nice picnic area for lunch or a break, restrooms were conveniently there wherever we went. The zoo itself looked very clean, too bad we didn’t really see any staff walking around/​inside exhibits, the kids had lots of questions us parents did not know how to answer.

The only nice guy is a old guy who was in the ticket counter, my husband and i wanted to buy a ice cream from machine but we couldn’t use the dollar so we tried to ask to people who works there, even we were standing front of them they’re keep talking and talking, minutes later finally they stop talking and sees us we asked them why it’s not working they answered us «oh i don’t work here» that’s it. if you don’t work here then why don’t you go back home. i was irritated with them. the point is animals are cute but people who works there sucks.

I held my daughters 1^st birthday party there. Good place to throw a party for the little ones. Comes with a free carousel ride 3 animals to touch pizza and juice box for max of 20 kids. Highly recommended if looking for a venue to host a kids party. Staff was excellent in providing things neede

It offers a very good exhibition for a cheap price.
It will take around 2 hours to see everything, so you’ll get an idea of how small the zoo is. However, it has cool exhibitions, though I sincerely expected more on the Galapagos Tortoises.
The savannah exhibition was closed too.

Wow, I rarely give bad ratings, but I’m going to be honest: it’s a little ratchet. Maybe it’s because I went on Wednesday (when it’s free) and there were screaming kids everywhere, but I wouldn’t pay $ 8 for a zoo that takes 30 minutes to walk around.
If you like foxes, leopards, eagles, and farm animals (like I do), you’ll at least enjoy the animals!

Small Zoo for a small island… its cool though. Put it on your «something to do» list.

Tiny little zoo that takes less than an hour to go through. It’s ok nothing special. Nice to go maybe just once.

I recently visited the Staten Island Zoo for an awareness day for 22Q.
I arrived at the zoo at about 11:30 AM, and the parking lot was full. I ended up parking in the neighborhood across the street from the zoo.
Entrance to the zoo was very cheap– only $ 8 for adults, kids receive a discounted price. There was a big map located at the entrance. Sadly, this zoo does not have any map brochures for you to take, luckily the zoo is small and easy to navigate. Even though the parking lot was full, the zoo was not very crowded, which made for a good experience.
There is a central building that has a variety of animals, birds, monkeys, snakes, fish, and so on. It surprised me how many reptiles they had. When I was there some of the zoo keepers were walking around with animals you could pet. This building is where the bathrooms are as well. A few peacocks wonder the grounds, and you can get pretty close to them.
They also have a small petting zoo for children. You can pet lamas, sheep, goats, and cows. You can buy animal feed for $ 0.50 a handful.
The leopard exhibit was really cool, the highlight of my trip. You are able to walk all around the exhibit and get pretty close to the animals.
I would suggest bringing your own food. They do have a small food place here– but it didn’t seem super clean. They have a few good seating areas that would be perfect for a picnic lunch.
The zoo wasn’t huge, but there was plenty to look at. It took me about 2 hours to see everything, I did take my time. Great for half a day trip if you are in the area.

As I child is was always excited to visit this zoo. Even now as an adult. They are making many changes and adding more and more animals every year. There are now kangaroos, huge turtles, and soon a carousel. There is a café where you can grab a bite to eat with many kid friendly foods. Beware though, in the same café is a mini gift shop. You will be suckered in by your precious child’s eyes asking for a gift. The zoo is a very adorable day. The kids under 3 are free. I have high hopes for this zoo with the changes they are making. It’s an excellent place.

This cute little zoo is a the perfect compliment to the Zoos that we have in every borough of NYC. While this is the smallest, it has enough to engage kids and adults for a couple of hours.
The first pleasant surprise is free parking. The next surprise is not as pleasant; if you are a member of the NYC Zoos in the other boroughs, you still have to pay. The Staten Island Zoo is not part of the system, but independent. The cost is not high though.
There is a very nice petting zoo, some small exhibits and a relatively new aquarium and reptile exhibit. With a little food and a nice day to walk around, it definately a good way to enjoy a couple of hours in Staten Island.

Been living in staten island for about four years and finally i got to check out the staten island zoo lol. This is such a cute little zoo. The people that work there are extremely nice and kind. There is a lot of indoor stuff. And there going to make a new exhibit later on. not telling… if you want to know go see for yourself lol. Eight bucks to get in. The animal feeding area is slinky… so I didn’t really feed the animals… one dollar to feed them… The gift shop was really tacky. The reason I say this is because when I walked in the hotdog stand was bigger then the gift shop… which was kinda disappointing… The animals were hideing .I’m guessing animals can be Shy… I love the huge blow fish it was all cute and big… for some reason it looked funny to me lol… that was my fav part of the zoo… Glad I finally came and check this place out!

«The Biggest Little Zoo.» — Staten Island Zoo’s motto and I couldn’t have described it any better myself.
A bus from the Ferry landing took us almost directly to the doorstep of the zoo. (A short walk of 0.3 miles from the bus stop). The inexpensive admission ($ 8 for an adult) and the relaxed, non-​crowded atmosphere makes it a super cute and wonderful stop for a few hours in an relaxing afternoon on the island.
This zoo is small and many of the animals are common farm animals — sheepies, goose, duckies, rabbits, llamas, horses, and alpacas. There is a petting zoo with an admission cost of $ 1, where you get to interact with much of the furry animals for as long as you like. They are rather friendly and let you hug or pet them without much complaint. There are also some less common animals like playful otters, foxes, red pandas, family of meerkats, peacocks and jaguars. The reptile collection and small aquarium has many species of rattle snakes and pouty pufferfish. The animals here also adopted a casual routine, seemingly unstressed by the presence of less people. The relaxing atmosphere also lets you wander around and hang in each area for as long as your heart desires, without being rushed or pressured away by people behind you. The staff is also super friendly and helpful.
What a sweet little zoo!

Not bad. I actually had really low expectation for this place because of many rumors about it being not worth it. Admission isn’t that bad for the stuff inside.
Staffs were really nice, always someone mopping the floor of the bathroom also. They have a lot of animals there, really amazing.
They have pony ride, which I think you pay $ 5 for and the staff will help you get on the pony and walk around in two circles. Great if it was for you kids but probably not a thing for adults.
I love how they have an area where for 50cents I think, you get some food and can feed some animals, very cute and exciting to be able to have close contact with the animals.
I would come back to revisit in the far future.

This was a regular childhood trip spot for me on school trips and family/​church weekend excursions.
This zoo is pretty decent. It’s not humongous, but it’s definitely enough to see a little bit of everything. I remember loving the pony rides as a kid. I also have this vague memory of my classmates eating the feed meant for animals that you can get from gumball machines for a quarter. I was always too scared to try.
The Staten Island Zoo is a great place to take your kids if you live in Staten Island.

This zoo is the perfect size for little ones. Not too big to be overwhelming and just enough space for them to see everything and not be too tired for the trek back home.
Walking around the zoo feels more like a stroll through a family farm. The grounds are beautiful with blossoming flowers everywhere and tree canopies providing shade throughout. I actually felt more relaxed leaving the zoo than when I arrived.
Admission is $ 8 for adults, $ 5 for children and Wednesdays are donation admission days. Pony rides are $ 5 dollars and a stack of feeding crackers for the petting zoo is $ 2. We packed lunch and snacks so I didn’t notice the price of food in the café, but the lunch pavilion is clean and spacious for a picnic.
If you don’t live in Staten Island don’t let the location deter you from a visit. From the city, we took the ferry then S48 to the zoo and the trip took about an hour and a half. Leaving the zoo, the S53 picks up right outside the zoo gates and ends its route at the R line 86^th Street Station and I was back in Midtown in just minutes over an hour.
