Codella Brazilian Jiu Jitsu Academy is a Martial Arts Academy owned and operated by Mike Codella, a long time friend, student, and training partner of World Champion Renzo Gracie. We specialize in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu, Thai Boxing, wrestling and MMA/​Mixed Martial Arts. We have a tremendous children and teen program, where kids actually focus, train, and get more proficient at self defense!

History

Established in 2004.

Mike Codella’s Academy is an affiliate of Renzo Gracie’s Academy. With Renzo’s encouragement, Mike opened his first Academy in 2004 in an effort to spread Renzo’s Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and MMA throughout Staten Island.

Mike Codella, a long time student, friend, and now Second Degree Black Belt under World Champion and legend Renzo Gracie, Mike teaches this cutting edge method of proven fighting/​self defense, the way he practiced, and learned it from Renzo Gracie for so many years. We also offer Muay Thai, American boxing, and MMA right here in Staten Island, New York. All levels are invited to train at Codella Academy. From the beginner to the advanced all will benefit from our training and fighting methods.

I have been training at this academy for years, The instruction is as technical and detailed as if Renzo Gracie himself was teaching. Mike has been training under him for over 20 years and has kept the same class structure that has brought him through the ranks. Convenient class schedules and even has Muy Thai instruction. Women, Teens, and Kid classes as well. This place is my second home!

They are very friendly here. My husband and my 4 year old take bjj classes and they love it! They are veteran friendly. Both my husband and I are veterans and they have been very nice and willing to work with us if we needed.

I must first preface this by saying I haven’t attended a class there and don’t plan on it. I was lied and told that they are very veteran friendly when in fact it’s the exact opposite. I was lied to and told that I could be on a month to month contract when I expressed interest in classes. Shortly after signing up and having a work schedule change I called to inform them that I would no longer be able to attend classes and that I would appreciate a call back. I called on three separate occasions that week without a single call back. On literally the 31st day after signing my contract which again I thought was a month to month I was kindly contacted by the academy’s collection company, I had been put into collections ! After explaining to them that I had not attended any classes and that I was on a monthly and that I would gladly pay for that month I was informed that I had signed a yearly contract and was on the hook for all of it. This place is the farthest thing from friendly and accommodating let alone vet friendly. I wouldnt recommend this place to even my enemies let alone any of my friends. Stay away for sure !
