Sadie’s Gourmet Waffles & Bakery

Disappointed. That one word sums up my experience here for dine-​in lunch on a Friday.
I tried the «Gourmet Waffle», which is topped with «strawberry, banana, and apple compote, topped with brown sugar butter sauce». On their site’s menu it lists at $ 5.50, but the menu at the store showed $ 6-​something (6.50?). I got this waffle and a Nantucket Nectar juice bottle, yet my bill was over $ 10. For the price, these waffles and the servings are way too small. Just not worth it.
My review is only based on this and my dine-​in experience at the shop, as I have no idea (yet) how their bakery items or other lunch items are…
The bananas were good, but the strawberries were from a frozen package (mushy) and the «apple compote» was really just apple pie filling from a jar.
The waffle itself was indeed crispy on the outside, with some notes of butter, but unfortunately it was a little chewy overall instead of light and fluffy on the inside. That would be fine with me, as the waffle itself is an interesting European take on them to make it crispy, but the problem was how it was prepared. My waffle was coating in little, charred bits of whatever from the past waffles made in the same iron. They didn’t clean the iron at all. That’s unacceptable. And I couldn’t pick out these pieces of char because it numerous and cooked into the waffle’s crust. So I just ate it anyways. The fruit covered up most of its charred taste, but still not the waffle advertised on their site nor in the images here.
The Gourmet Waffle was ultimately a poor choice, but since this place has waffles in its name, I figured it would have been a good choice.
I really want this place to succeed, but I’m not sure it’s going to unless it changes. The people in the dining area with me seem to use the place to work on their laptop and drink coffee (ie: like a Starbucks), and I have a feeling they bought the coffee somewhere else. Because due to the shop’s layout, it’s easy to walk in, never make visual contact with the staff, and camp out.
What needs to change…
1.) Ditch the paper plates and plastic utensils. These are waffles, dammit, not country fair funnel cakes. I don’t enjoy cutting my waffle with a plastic fork on top of a paper plate to eat. Going through all of these disposable items is sure to be more expensive. Not only that, if you’re trying to appeal to the students and hipsters (of which I am neither), they’re all about conservation and going green. So I’m sure they’d see disposable plates and utensils as a big waste.
2.) Get rid of half of the high stools and tables, and put some real dining tables in here. While I love modern looks, and understand that this place was going more hipster than anything else, they missed the mark. They went form over function. Everything is uncomfortable to sit in for too long, and even the lowest of those tables and chairs is an awkwardly high height. They do have one low table, but it’s accompanied by lounging chairs instead of dining chairs. For this one reason I don’t ever want to dine in here again.
3.) Educate your staff on how to properly clean and maintain the waffle irons. Charred bits all over my waffle is a sad fate for waffles that could be so much more. You got the nice caramelization there, so don’t ruin that flavor with bitter char.
4.) All of the fruit overpowered the flavor of the waffle. It wouldn’t be overpowering if you went with fresh fruit instead of frozen/​canned and full of sugar. You already have a ton of sweetness with the brown sugar butter sauce and any syrup customers add, so you don’t need that with your fruit toppings. For fresh fruit, I’d stick to sliced bananas, sliced strawberries, blueberries, and raspberries. Dump the frozen strawberries and canned/​jarred apples. And as it stands, you only have one waffle menu item with more than one fruit.
I’d give this place one star as a result of my experience, but since I really want this place to try harder and succeed, I’m being generous with 2 stars. I hope Sadie’s can take what is a good idea and these European style waffles and improve upon their failed execution.

Absolutely fantastic service! The place is super light and warm and welcoming. The staff are some of the nicest I’ve encountered. I can’t even begin on the food. It’s so great. Also they have a «Namesake» club where if you’re name is Sadie they will put your photo on the wall. Definitely my new go to spot.

Would recommend ordering the wraps or waffles. The waffle portions are small but they do have nice choices of fun fruit toppings and the gourmet waffle I had was enjoyable.
Was disappointed in my breakfast sandwich as it was overly greasy and couldn’t taste the avocado. The coffee is not the best and would expect espresso in order to compete with today’s breakfast places.

Sadies service is fast, the waffles are delicious and filling and the location is an easy walk from campus or downtown.
Their waffles are different than most other places, they’re made from a dough rather than a batter and are denser and have a nice balance of sweet and savory. They have a multitude of toppings, but they aren’t necessary, the waffles are delicious on their own.
They also have a verity of baked goods for sale. From monkey bread to cookies to scones and all are of the same quality as their waffles.
Highly recommend if you’re looking for a quick place to grab a delicious breakfast.

Best. Waffles. Ever. Tasty little local place, small portions perfect for snack or small lunch (or eating 3 waffles, whichever). The berry cobbler and cinnamon roll are my favorites!

Waffles are delicious here and very reasonably priced. At first glance your waffle looks small, but all you need is one!
Ordering was a bit chaotic and there is very minimal seating. Staff is friendly and orders come up quickly once you make your way through the chaos

Fantastic breakfast gem. Had the bacon, egg and cheese croissant and was not disappointed and had a great price. The coffee could be better, but it was hot and caffeinated and did the job.
I have yet to have their waffles our their lunch menu but I am excited to try them.

We’ll be back! Sweet little shop conveniently located on Pugh Street, we had the Peanut Butter with Chocolate and Cinnamon Roll waffles. Both very tasty and there was a good amount of peanut butter on my wife’s waffle. Mine really gave me the impression of a cinnamon roll on a hot fresh authentic Belgian waffle (different than anything I’ve had before). Can’t wait to try the actual cinnamon roll, scones and other treats. Maybe we’ll be back for lunch soon!

Heard this new place was open and was curious to try it out.
Had the «Sweet & Salty» waffle (maple syrup, vanilla butter, and bacon) and it was excellent… everything I hoped it would be. It was not super big, size wise, but I was totally okay with that. I can, however, see the American affinity for serving sizes to be a possible point of contention for others.
Also enjoyed one of the croissant sandwiches, which was quite tasty. It was flaky, buttery goodness. That said, if Weis bakery is your yard stick for what a «crescent» should be, then I feel badly for you… you should broaden your horizons and this wouldn’t be a bad place to start.
Topped it all off with an iced cinnamon roll which was generously sized and really good.
Quality of food was great, pricing seemed reasonable, portion sizing was fair.
Not sure if they expect a lot of take out/​delivery business, but with the exception of 1 low table, all the seating was hi-​top tables with 2 seats, so the space did not seem ideally suited to parties of 4 or more or groups with small children. That would be my only «knock» on the place.
All-​in-​all I would recommend Sadie’s and would certainly go back.

I went to Sadie’s the second Saturday it opened, and it was busy. I didn’t find that a bad thing at all. I went with my boyfriend between 11AM-​12PM, and luckily we went at that time because it seemed that we were two of last people to get waffles because they ran out shortly after us. We found this understandable (granted we did get waffles) because it is a new business that was perhaps still figuring out the amount of waffles to prepare and the average amount of customers in a day. My boyfriend got the waffle of the month, which was the Crème de la Crème (waffle topped with peanut butter and chocolate sauce), while I got the classic with whipped cream. Both were delicious! We also decided to get a cinnamon bun because coffee becomes $ 1 with any baked good purchases. It was all very filling and satisfying.
The next weekend we went back. This time around, we both got croissant sandwiches (bacon, egg, and cheese), as well as another Crème de la Crème waffle (which as the waffle of the month, was $ 0.50 off) and one of Sadie’s Waffle (options: maple cream, chocolate sauce, nutella, cookie butter or peanut butter) with cookie butter and caramel added. We also each got stamp cards where five waffle purchases gets you a free waffle. The croissant sandwiches were delicious; the croissant was nice and flaky but kept together and the egg was fluffy. We each still enjoyed our waffles.
The prices are very decent with the most expensive waffle item being $ 5.50 (we didn’t get that) and the cheapest waffle item (the classic, which I got the first time) being $ 2.95.
I’ve been having such great times at Sadie’s that I am thinking of making it a weekly routine to go.
Other notes: All of the employees are very nice. The seating may not be ideal for some people, but the business does have a variety of options: a low table that seems kid-​friendly, high tables with mixed chairs/​stools (some have backs, most don’t).
