This is really a great course. I lost a lot of balls in the trees, but also had my first birdie ever here! When I was in college, the front and back 9 were reversed. So, my first birdie came on 8(which is 17 now). The flag was on the top of the green where their is a steep hill to separate it from the front. I landed my tee shot on the front and had long put. Miraculously, it went up the hill, broke severely, and went in. I was in shock – what a great day! One of my roommates and I used to get the student pass and we could play as much as we wanted throughout the semester. I went from horrible at golf to slightly-less horrible at my time at MSU. It helped that we have one of the best Professional Golf Management programs in the country. I played with some great golfers because of that major. The challenging part of the course is the length. It has a very long par 5 on 9(used to be 18). I’ve heard that John Daly is the only player to ever reach that green in two shots. There is also a considerable amount of water throughout the course. A few holes are incredibly simple, but others are as challenging as you’ll find anywhere. Old Waverly is not a long drive if you’re in Starkville and want to play a premier course. However, the MSU Golf Course is excellent. The grounds are well-maintained and it is very challenging.

Played this course back in middle of June 2012(Yeah yeah I’m way behind on the writing of my various reviews! Cut me some slack!!) when I was up in Starkville to see my boy at the Mascot Camp he was attending up there at MSU. Took a Saturday morning and decided to play this course cause I had heard it was good. MSU has a degree program in Golf Course Management and I guess the students do their studying here. Everything I had heard was dead on… course was in great shape and the greens were outstanding and fast. Now I play in the mid 80’s to low 90’s but to be honest I quit keeping score after the 7th hole because this damn course is either sneakily evil or evilly sneaky!!! Don’t look that hard standing on the tees but there are a quite few blind landing areas and a few of the tees have alleys off the tee that force a dead straight drive from anywhere from 125 to 150 yards before the fairway opens up, so it messes with you if you typically move your ball left to right or right to left. Those alleys play mind games worse than hitting over water!!! Then you get to a dead straight hole and you start thinking that«OK I’m gonna get me some back» but the freakin’ course is in your head so hard(at least it was mine) that you start looking like Roy McAvoy in Tin Cup when he developed the shanks!!! I don’t play from the tips but usually the tee box right in front of the tips and that’s what I did this day and this course played bitchkitty long… I will play this course when I’m back in Starkville again but next time I’m gonna swallow my pride and move up one tee box!!! If you’re in Starkville and looking for a round the price is damn good for the fees and the course is well worth experiencing!!!
