LOVE the woman who works here… she’s very sweet and helpful. Between her good customer service and the massive quantity available of assorted baked goods – it’s enough to make me want to come back …They have GIANT sized rice-krispy treats for heavens sake! I would’ve shared a picture but I already devoured it… Had the chili-con-carne which was okay. small size container. The price for my 2 items(chili and gigantic rice krispy treat), came to just over $ 4. Not bad for around these parts. Also, I asked her for a piece of sliced sourdough bread to accompany my chili since it doesn’t come with anything(i.e. crackers, bread, etc.) and she didn’t charge me for it. They also have a full made-to-order sandwich menu to choose from. The sandwich menu is a bit hidden so peer around a bit to locate it behind the counter on the side of the fridge, I think. Also, they will make any other sandwich you like not on the menu… deli-style, pick what you like, etc. Also, $ 5 minimum on credit/debit card! So, bring cash! Overall, this a little hidden gem of a café catering to us hungry-I-don’t-want-to-go-to-Coupa-Café option! Thanks Cubberley and keep up the solid service!

This is a homey, quiet little place in the Graduate School of Education. They make tuna salad and hard-boiled eggs in-house and have handwritten labels and prices in the fridge, it’s quite charming. Yes, cash-only, but the prices aren’t bad. The owners are friendly and I notice they interact with familiars so there is a nice atmosphere and I am definitely coming back more often. The fact they don’t take Meal Plan Dollars is a minor inconvenience though. Bonus: Extensive(and I mean HUGE) selection of snacks, especially protein bars. Nice! tldr: quiet shop, friendly staff, reasonable prices

2 stars for the friendly service, quiet and secluded ambiance, the wide selection of chips and drinks, and the prepackaged(vegan?) pastries. Phew… that’s a lot to pack into 2 stars! I ordered the Petaluma sandwich(grilled chicken breast with tomatoe, lettuce, and avocado on sliced wheat bread and pickle spears on the side) with chips and a drink. I asked for no cheese and the avocado was extra. Because I really enjoyed the ambiance of the café I am sorry to say that the sandwich experience was like being in a bad relationship where you notice, but ignore all the red flags… the microwaved«grilled» chicken, the nearly $ 11 cost for a full meal, the bland appearance and taste. Halfway through I knew it wasn’t going to get any better, but in a last effort to salvage it(aka not waste food or $) I took out the chicken and had myself a vegetarian sandwich. Needless to say I felt unsatisfied(a little sick too) and robbed. Overall, I would come back to try the pastries/buy something to drink/have a relaxing place to eat, but definitely no sandwiches for me.

Cash only. There, now that I got that off my chest, I can talk about the rest. It’s in a basement. Get over it. Honestly, I don’t see what’s so bad about the basement anyway, no sun in your eyes at least! They make to order sandwiches and have salads in the refrigerators, but most importantly, they have vegan cookies, brownies, scones, bars, and other pastries :)

She makes espresso drinks more to my taste than Coupa and the made-to-order sandwiches have been great* and there is good selection of *other* stuff here so I can get emergency Fritos or Mo’ Beta or ice cream, depending on my needs. There is no T-Mobile reception down there but it’s a nice, quiet quick escape from work when needed. Yay! * Except yesterday she wouldn’t make me a PB&J on dark rye and I couldn’t understand why– was it a philosophical problem or personnel or what? Dunno, but I was sad.

Ugh, had such a drastically different experience here today I had to update my review. They were out of egg salad, so I had tuna instead… It was watery, and bland, and had way too much mayo. It was on stale dutch crunch bread. There was nothing redeeming about this sandwich. Horrible!

If you’re facing the School of Education building, walk around to the left side. About midway, you’ll see an outdoor patio — step into it and take the stairs down to the basement — that’s where you’ll find Cubberley Café. For a small basement café, they stock a good variety of things to eat and drink. If you arrive in the lunch hours, you can get a custom made sammie or other hot meal of the day. There are lots of refrigerated cases with drinks galore and healthier items like yogurt and cheese. Got a sweet tooth? There are tons of pastries and cookies on the counter. There’s a small seating area with a microwave adjacent to the café. On good weather days, sit in the lovely patio outside instead.

Totally solid place to get coffee, quick breakfast, a sandwich, or some other item you forgot to bring to work(or class?). The staff is pleasant, the sandwiches are good, and they have an impressive quantity of items for such a small place.

Still solid. You can also pop in in the morning to pick up cheap and strong coffee, a bagel, a muffin, juice, etc. Not just for lunch! The folks who work here are quite nice too. The only thing that could be improved: I wish they’d spread the mayo/mustard on the sandwich more evenly.

Located underneath Stanford’s School of Education, it would be easy to miss this place if it weren’t for the cutout of the chubby chef perched at the top of the stairs descending into the place.(I have a feeling this same cut out is part of a group shot in many photo albums, just something I’ve witnessed during my visits.) The Cubberly Café makes a terrific and affordable sandwich and does so according to your specifications. They also have a great menu of offerings they’re known for including the Stanford, the Cubberly and others. They make a kick ass chicken salad sandwich, an assortment of desserts and they have a wide array of snacks. Stop by today — friendly service awaits just beyond the silly group enjoying a Kodak moment with the chubby chef cutout with today’s special’s on it!

Best place to get a sandwich on campus(unless you love Subway). Vegetarian sandwich has quite an abundant amount of avocado. Good bread selection, including rye.

I work in Cubberley, right on top of the Café. My coworkers and I don’t really come down here even though it is literally downstairs from us. The sandwhiches are ok, I get the Cubberley or the Stanford once in a while. They’re not anything to write home about(or write on Unilocal about) but keeps the hunger pangs away when busy with work or studying. The chili that they serve weekly is pretty decent, only $ 1.50 per cup. Do not EVER buy salad here. I was starved and they had closed down the sandwhich area(closes at 2pm I believe) so there was nothing to eat so I settled for the salad. The salad is about as large as a side salad at Arby’s or Wendy’s and cost me around $ 6!!! =P not tasty.

I love Cubberly Café! Okay, so it’s totally not scenic downstairs(it’s a basement), but where else on campus can a graduate student not wait 10 hours in line at lunch time? They have a great assortment of home-cooked meals, including sandwiches to go, soups, curry, and during lunch hours, sandwiches made to order. I usually order their turkey sandwich on some kind of fancy and yummy sourdough bread and it’s fairly cheap(under $ 5), which isn’t something I can say about most of the other cafes on campus. Plus, their sandwiches are HUGE so I can save the other half for lunch the next day. Yes, I’m cheap, but I’m a grad student. Plus, all the people who work here are super friendly and nice. They know many grad students and employees by name! If it’s nice outside, there is ample seating on the patio or near Green Library. PS — They only take cash so come prepared!

Located in the basement of the Cubberley Education Building, this café makes sandwiches made to order, along with the premade stuff like sodas, sandwiches, salads etc. But my favorite thing from Cubberley Café is the vegetarian curry – mind you, it’s not the greatest, but it’s different from many offerings available close by.
