Anderson Collection at Stanford University

A wonderful collection that makes you happy!

Attended the Fall Exhibition Debut, and it was pretty informational.
This is a pretty new addition to the Stanford Art Department, it’s a bit more modern than the Cantor next door. Even the architecture of the building was modern, you walk in to this beautiful site of stairs and some installations to your left. Out front you have giant, and quite comfortable, bean bags that are great for a quick read, a meeting, or finishing up some work on your laptop.
Overall, I will probably come back here during a lunch break or for another installation reception.

Judy Rino gives a wonderful tour. She tailored a tour for me, because there were just two of us, and because she really knows the collection. She’s vivacious and interesting, too.
I would vote the Anderson Collection as one of the best collections of postwar art anywhere in the world. Maybe it’s number one, in fact. The works are very attractive and easy to enjoy.

I really needed my modern art fix this year and this place offered me that. The building this collection is housed in is modern compared to the Cantor Center. I loved seeing my favorite abstract expressionists Pollock, Clyfford Still, Mark Rothko, etc. They had a unique display of modern art. They could have some more design or photography.

A cute little museum open to the public, there’s so much to look at and reflect about here. What’s nice about this museum is that photography without flash is welcomed. I also found a random book about the collection left on a bench inside. The book showed how the works of arts in the collection came to be. Namely pictures of the works of arts photographed in their homes.
I was impressed but unfamiliar with the collection, seeing that the exhibit is fairly new.
I would visit this place again in the event of new collections and exhibits.

Good collection of modern art (I believe all post WW II), in a new building, conveniently located next to the Stanford art museum. Helpul and friendly staff. No admission charge. There is also a nice library, with lots of good books on modern art, if you want to sit down and relax. No onsite café, but there is a nice one next door at the Stanford art museum. Parking on weekends is usually pretty easy, and most of the parking is free.

My husband and I took our two young boys to the Anderson Collection at Stanford for the first time and we all loved it. The staff who greeted us at the entrance were very friendly and the boys loved the colorful Robert Hudson sculpture installed right near the front door. There were plenty of other engaging artworks for kids to see in the galleries upstairs, including our boys’ favorite Yosemite Falls, Homage to Watkins, by Mark Tansey. We also had a great time seeing the major Wayne Thiebaud painting and works by other artists they were learning about in their school. I personally loved seeing Susan Rothenberg’s Wishbone and Nathan Oliveira’s Reclining Nude. The collection is beautiful, parking is easy, and admission is free. We highly recommend the Anderson Collection. It’s a wonderful outing for a family!

I absolutely love the Anderson Collection. We have some Anderson Collection pieces in my office, but seeing them in this setting… it’s amazing. I can’t claim to know much about art, but there’s definitely something for everybody here. The docents are really nice, and the Anderson family themselves are so friendly & knowledgeable. Everybody is very willing to talk about their favorite pieces, as well as listen to you ramble about why you like certain pieces. Can’t wait to go back!

I took an art class at Stanford this quarter and we went to the Anderson collection for a field trip. I was never a connoisseur of art, but I guess I did learn to appreciate it at Stanford.
The Anderson collection is of two floors. I had the chance to check out only the first floor. It had awesome art pieces by many bay area modern artists. I could spend hours just staring at the art work. Being a lover of simplicity, I loved the Oboe by Harvey quaytman. I love how the orange stripes give it energy and how there are subtle splashes of color that you can see when you observe closer.
Overall, though I cannot compare the collection with others, I can definitely say it was worth my time.

If you love modern art, you must go check out the Anderson collection. It’s great, free, well-​spaced out. You don’t feel too overwhelmed like at the Tate, or the Louvre, or even the Met. You can stand in front of the art, absorb its greatness, let it inspire you, and leave feeling awesome.

Only a few weeks old, the Anderson Collection is an excellent addition to the Cantor Art Center right next door at Stanford University. Like the Cantor, it is free; just make sure to get a reservation on weekends. Hunk and Moo Anderson have gifted their collection (hence the name) of American art, mostly from the 1950’s and ’60’s. I’m a huge fan of the New York School, and if art by Jackson Pollock and Willem De Kooning is your kind of thing, you’ve come to the right place. Also, many Bay Area Figurative artists are represented. The only possible drawback is the collection’s limited scope: it is a very extensive collection of a very short period of art history. But what a period it was! And right next door just happens to be a broader selection; hit both museums and make a day of it. Isn’t it nice to live in an area where families like the Andersons and the Fishers are willing to share multi-​million dollar art collections?

Checked out the Anderson Collection at Stanford University because it’s FREE and open until 8pm on Thursdays. It’s next door to the Cantor Museum so might as well.
It recently opened not sure when. First time there Thursday 9÷25÷14.
It’s not very big, but it’s spacious and 2 stories. First floor they have a thing on the artists, didn’t have time to watch the video about them. Some artwork in the lobby area and in the back.
Upstairs is more artwork. You can take all the pics you want, just NO FLASH.
