Black Rock Inn

We stayed at the Black Rock Inn this past weekend to celebrate our friend’s upcoming wedding. There were 13 in our party which included 8 adults, 4 kids under 21, and our 17 month old toddler. With such a large party, we practically rented out the entire inn and had it to ourselves. The location of the inn was absolutely breathtaking, where we were surrounded by beautiful trees. The grounds also had a huge amount of black obsidian (hence the name — Black Rock Inn), and Jeff, the innkeeper, let each of the kids take a couple pieces home. The interior décor of the inn was tastefully done. Rooms were clean (and cleaned daily) and beds were comfortable. Jeff also had his own personal wine cave with about 3000 bottles of wine that we could choose from to do personal wine-​tastings at the inn.
Jeff was friendly and accommodating. He made us hot breakfast every morning (scrambled eggs with sausage, potatoes, and fresh banana bread the first morning, and a delicious spinach and cheese quiche, potatoes, and cinnamon/​walnut bread the second morning). Breakfast always included fresh fruit and coffee as well as organic whole milk for our son!
All in all, we had a great experience and would stay here again. While prices at the Black Rock Inn were higher than average, we felt it was well worth it, especially with our large party. Highly recommend!

Given the solid 5 star rating and 5 star price ($ 450/​night for our room, the cheapest offering), I was deeply disappointed with our experience. The Inn’s exterior is charming but the interior is sterile and charmless, the walls paper thin and bare, and the grounds naked & barren. I also felt we were imposing on our host, who often had his arms crossed.
While wandering through St Helena we discovered Jeff is selling the Inn, which may explain the lack of attention to detail and his relatively joyless demeanor, and I suspect –given the Inn was empty on our holiday weekend– the prices are inflated now to minimize traffic.
We were the only guests but not offered an upgraded room, and breakfast was served with paper napkins and looked like refrigerator leftovers (my husband liked it, btw, and in fairness I just wasn’t hungry yet, but the presentation was lacking).
Our favorite Inn, in contrast, is the Cedar Gables Inn in Napa – half the price and a hundred times the hospitality, charm, presentation and taste. Truly a gourmet experience on every level – warm delightful hosts, fresh cookies on arrival, expresso & homemade donuts at breakfast («Suzie’s fat pills»!), wine and cheese & live guitar by a fire in the evening.
We also heard Luxe in Calistoga has similar charm and attention to detail (and for less $$$), and we will try that next time.

My girlfriends and I recently spent three nights at the Black Rock Inn to celebrate our collective 30^th birthdays.
We took over the insanely adorable guest cottage and it couldn’t have been more perfect for us. Equally comfortable, chic and spacious, the cottage had everything you’d want for a luxurious weekend away — cozy beds, beautiful décor and a private patio to die for. We had a private outdoor fireplace, flowers, ivy, heaters, a large community table… the list goes on an on.
In addition to staying at a beautiful home in St. Helena (perfectly located in the Valley), at Black Rock Inn you get your own personal concierge service and chef! Before we even arrived, the owner, Jeff, provided us with tons of local recommendations and went so far to make hard-​to-​get reservations for dinner. Upon arrival, he was very accommodating, generous with his wine, cooked a delicious breakfast each morning, and even confirmed limo and spa appointments on our behalf. At the end of each day, we’d come home to turndown service and a lit fireplace on our private patio — what more could you ask for?

The Home you want away from home!
I wish I could own The Black Rock Inn (BRI) and invite my friends to visit while in Napa. Last weekend we (me, my wife and a small group of friends) spent an extended weekend at BRI because our other friends were getting married in St. Helena. Jeff, the inn owner, provided a wonderful place to stay and made our four night vacation very welcoming and comfortable.
My wife and I stayed in Suite #2. The room was spacious, clean, relaxing and had a big bathroom (a plus for the wife). The suite is located on the second floor with a small balcony to overlook the front of the property. Also, leave your shampoo and conditioner at home. Jeff has stocked the bathroom with products from the Napa Soap Company!
Now what makes BRI the best. The hospitality AND the attention to detail AND the food. Jeff does a great job making sure his guests are comfortable and never hungry. Our group had an action packed weekend ahead so we inquired about having dinner prepared by Jeff on our first night. We agreed to a menu and the cost. Every dish served was tasty and remarkable. That includes every breakfast served in the mornings. It is rare to experience such great hospitality and I am glad we choose BRI for our vacation.

I spent the weekend here for my 21^st birthday and rented the guest room and a suite. Every guests in my 10 person party were absolutely delighted by the beauty of the place. Black Rock Inn is quaint, clean, beautiful, full of personally, and of course, the ambiance is suited for a weekend getaway.
Every morning I woke up with breakfast, quiet and calm atmosphere, and beautiful scenery that surrounded the place. I think the cherry on top of this gem though was the host himself. Jeff was very accommodating and attentive to our group which helped made the experience more perfect than it already was. He reorganized my whole itinerary for the weekend with wineries that we all enjoyed.
So to conclude, I’m coming back here for my wedding and bachelorette party :)

I was a bit leery of this place when I saw it on Unilocal.All of the reviews were 5 stars. I decided to stay during harvest weekend and I have to say this place is awesome. I generally prefer the larger, more modern hotels in Napa (Bardessono) and Calistoga (Solage) but this place was a refreshing change. It is well situated right off Silverado Trail and the rooms are nice with very modern appointments an touches. And as others have mentioned, Jeff is awesome.
If you’re looking for a more modern take on a wine country B&B, I definitely recommend this place. One other huge perk is that it is a very short drive to downtown St. Helena, which has some really solid restaurants. You’re also on a more quiet part of Silverado Trail with easy and quick access to everything from the Stag’s Leap District to Calistoga wineries.
And definitely hit Jeff up for some tips on Spring Mountain wineries — he has an encyclopedic knowledge of the region.

LOVE! My (now) fiancé and I stayed at the Black Rock Inn and we couldn’t be more happy with our stay and experience. Staying here really made my birthday weekend complete (which unknown to me when I booked it, became our engagement weekend!). Jeff was so welcoming and accommodating. It truly felt like we headed off to our friend’s house in the Napa Valley for the weekend.
We stayed upstairs in Suite 4. It was beautifully decorated and spacious. We enjoyed hanging out in our room or on the balcony in between wine tasting and dinner. After shuttling ourselves around between wineries and lunch, we came back in the afternoon to enjoy a relaxing glass of wine and some cheese at the Inn with Jeff. He’s so nice and friendly and it was great chatting it up with our (new) friend! There’s a really cool room that leads into a wine cellar/​cave that we hung out in. Check it out. ;) Waking up in the morning we were greeted by the smell of breakfast cooking. We headed downstairs and while Jeff finished whipping up a delicious hot meal for us, we noshed on some yogurt, fresh fruit, OJ, and coffee.
Location on the Silverado Trail was perfect (across the street from Duckhorn). There are so many great wineries along the Trail which is great for keeping you away from the traffic of Hwy 29. Such a great B&B. Definitely recommend and we are going to be repeat visitors.

I stayed at The Black Rock Inn for the first time and had a thoroughly delightful stay. I believe it just opened a few months ago so the owner, Jeff, is still putting some finishing touches on the place. The room I stayed in had been almost completely remodeled and had all new furnishings. Jeff couldn’t have been a better host. From a fantastic breakfast, to a tour of the Inn (which he is clearly very proud of) to providing tour guide tips, he was so pleasant and accomodating. Although I had never met Jeff before he made me feel very welcome. I am actually purchasing a property in St. Helena and he even volunteered to help me review the inspection report on my new home. The Black Rock Inn makes one feel as if they are a guest in St Helena rather than a tourist. I would certainly recommend it.

Beautiful interior design, extremely clean (well they were only open for 2 months), and the owner is super nice. I’ve never seen such a beautiful victorian home and the property is stunning! The toiletries that come with the room were the best I’ve ever used; they smelled so lovely (I even brought it back, usually I just leave them there). I would definitely come back on a non-​business trip.

Jeff created a B&B that was decorated like my ideal home and filled with people that i would want as a friend. Loved it all, TLC doesn’t begin, and no plain muffin basket for the breakfast part. treats of all kinds with your dietary needs considered.

Non-​witty beware! Jeff was an incredible host with a great sense of humor. We would recommend this inn to anyone coming to St. Helena or the Napa Valley. The location was fantastic and conveniently close to amazing wineries and restaurants. Jeff assisted us with a last minute change in dining plans and generously opened his wine cellar to us paired with amazing cheeses! We felt right at home as soon as we arrived.
My father owns a bed and breakfast in Portland so our standards are pretty high, however, the Black Rock Inn exceeded our expectations. The beds were comfortable and the main house is quaint and well decorated. Breakfast was delicious in the morning and we were lucky to have our first wine tasting of the day come to us at the inn — again thanks to Jeff. A great way to start off the day in Napa!
We will definitely be back to stay at the Black Rock Inn!

The perfest place to experience the Napa Valley. Offers privacy away from the central strip, while remaining close to all the best wineries. Jeff was a wonderful host and spoiled us during our stay! The food and accomodations were top rate, and we will definitely be back again soon.

We just returned from our stay at the guest house at Black Rock Inn, and we were very sad to leave. Our stay was extraordinary! It was our first trip to Napa Valley, and we’ve found the perfect place to stay on our future trips! Jeff was accommodating and cheerful. As a chef, he made us our breakfast in the morning, and offered to make us dinner if we so desired. We had two small children with us so a private dinner at the inn prepared by a professional chef was exquisite and the perfect ending to a busy Saturday. Jeff even pulled out a couple bottles of wine for us to try. When we were super enthusiastic about what he was pouring, he went out of his way to contact the vineyard owner and set up a private tasting the very next morning. I’m certain Jeff has some great contacts in both restaurants and wineries alike. Had we not planned out our entire trip weeks before, we would have been more than happy to have let Jeff do it for us. We greatly enjoyed Jeff’s company and his attention to detail. He is amazing with customer service as we felt like like honored guests and old friends at the same time. Jeff aside, the grounds were beautiful. Black Rock Inn is tucked in along the highway. It’s quiet and dark at night, which gave us the perfect atmosphere to talk and drink our wine on the patio. It’s even quiet during the day, and the perfect place to curl up with a good book or call over a masseuse if you need a break from wine. The guest house and the main house were both beautifully and tastefully remodeled. The bedrooms and kitchen area were spacious and light. The showers were amazing, and my husband really really wanted to steal the super soft towels. My favorite part was the large patio with a table for ten and the little fireplace. We lounged and drank and talked while we enjoyed the beauty of the grounds around us. Luxurious, relaxing, comfortable! This place was amazing and we cannot wait to go back! It comes with our highest recommendations!

My wife and I spent a weekend at the black rock inn and had a wonderful time. It is in a quiet, serene location on the silverado trail but still close to winery’s and restaurant s. Throughout the inn the appointments are first class. The bed was wonderful. We toured the inn and found all spacious rooms to be light and airy. We enjoyed Jeff’s company, wine and breakfast. Cannot reccommed enough…

Black Rock Inn is located in a beautiful location on the Silverado Trail. The Inn has wonderful guest rooms, and the interior design is contemporary but very comfortable and stylish. NOT your typical B&B with shag rug and knotty pine walls! Unique wine cave with access from inside, and nice sitting areas for privacy from other guests. Wine tasting on a veranda, local restaurants near by, nice and quiet and a lovely place to relax. Wonderful stay!
