The Organic Cave is a small bakery located in New Town, St Charles. They specialize in products that are friendly with the Paleo diet, which means their products are all gluten-free, dairy-free, grain-free, and soy-free. I stopped by on a Sunday afternoon and tried out a couple of their options(pics are available on their website). – Green Chili Cheddar Buns: Delicious, especially when warm. Reminded me of Red Lobster cheddar biscuits. – Cake in a Jar(made w/coconut flour): WOW. Didn’t know a gluten-free cake could be this moist and tasty. The dairy-free buttercream icing was amazing and tasted like the real thing. – Banana Nut Muffin(made w/almond flour): Very good. Lots of walnuts, not too sweet with a nice texture. So it seems that the products are great. However there are a couple downsides. The first is that this is a very small operation. There’s not a lot of stuff readily available at any given time, and they don’t maintain regular hours. You should always call beforehand or make an appointment. Secondly, this stuff is PRICEY. That muffin was north of 5 bucks. The Cake-in-a-Jar(essentially a large piece of chocolate cake) was 8 bucks. These are premium artisanal niche products and the prices reflect that. If you’re looking for some good gluten-free/Paleo treats, definitely check this place out.
