Specialties
The Virginia Academy of Fencing provides top level instruction in the art of Fencing. Whether you are 4 years old or 94, and whether you have never held a sword before or an international competitor, VAF has a program for you.
VAF provides instruction in both the Olympic Sport of Fencing (the modern day style, as seen in the Olympics) as well as Historical Swordsmanship (a Historical European Martial Art, or HEMA, where students learn medieval and Renaissance forms of fencing). Instruction is available through group classes, private lessons and day camps.
New to fencing? Our programs begin at the bare-bones-basic levels, and we provide equipment rentals so that you don’t have to invest in everything all at once.
History
Established in 1991.
Founded in 1991 by Russian Fencing Master Alexandre Ryjik, The Virginia Academy of Fencing (VAF) has introduced fencing to thousands of adults and children in the Washington metropolitan area. In 2005, we moved to our 13,000 sq. ft. location, one of the largest fencing venues in the U.S. VAF coaches teach all aspects of Olympic sport fencing (including foil, sabre, and épée) as well as Historical Swordsmanship (a Historical European Martial Art, or HEMA, where students learn medieval and Renaissance fencing). A new program in theatrical stage combat is being introduced.
Providing high quality fencing instruction is only part of our philosophy. Respect, honor, and good sportsmanship are an integral part of our disciplined approach to achieving athletic and personal growth. VAF offers more comprehensive historical and Olympic sport fencing programs than any other school in the U.S.
