Jim The Handyman

I used Jim the Handyman to hang a bedroom door. Luke did a fantastic job. Given that it started out as a plain piece of wood, I was amazed at how careful he was to carve the spots for the hinges in the right place and the door knob hole. From start to finish very professional — door hung perfectly. I will call them for everything from now on. Just wish they did plumbing.

$ 125 to do a slipshod job of caulking our shower stall (all of 10 feet of caulk) — not worth it. We thought they were going to do the entire shower stall, not just the bottom edge.

hired him to hang a door… he hung it crooked. When I complained about it he blamed the frame. He was going to leave it crooked unless I paid to have the frame rebuilt. When i asked him to shim the door, he tried doing it which helped. After that I had to prompt him to deepen the groove for the door jam which he did and which helped.
Had I not been there myself, I would have had a crooked door. I would expect a professional to come up with those solutions by themselves. I will say that he appears honest. I asked him to re-​caulk the bathtub but on inspection he said total re-​caulking wasn’t necessary.

Have used them three times over the last few years. Great work and an affordable, reasonable price. I know who to call to patch holes, paint, install ceiling fans, etc. No matter the project, Jim The Handyman is who I will call first.

Jim did a great job at very low price. He installed new folding closet doors and repaired soem holes in drywall.

I’ve used Jim for a number of jobs over the years … interior & exterior painting, bookshelves, drywall, replacement of rotted wood and other jobs. Absolutely first rate work. Not cheap, but then again you’re not dealing with a work crew of illegals who can’t speak English, have no insurance, etc. This is a local company with local employees who do a great job.

I had high hopes based on this company’s reviews, and they did ok. Not amazing. For one thing they are hard to book. Between scheduling the estimate and work it took over 2 weeks to get someone to my house to do some work. When the guy arrived he didn’t have the J-​channel he needed and said that no Home Depots in the area carried it so he might have to reschedule — AND — it would be a while b/​c the company always takes the last 2 weeks of August off. Whaaaa??? I was not happy since the estimate clearly stated the need for J-​channel and it had been a week since that was written up… seems like they could have come prepared. While he was doing some caulking elsewhere I went online and found J-​channel at not one but two Home Depots within a few miles of my house, but then owner Jim located some and brought it over. So, all worked out ok and so far his repairs seem to be holding. Really not thrilled to be told I might have had to wait another few weeks though… this was, by the way, a time sensitive repair b/​c water was getting in behind a doggy door we’d installed. All in all, probably will look elsewhere next time. The thing that sold me was that they give a project price instead of hourly, but there might be other companies around that do that.

Jim the Handyman has been fixing small things and handling large tile jobs for me for years. Recently one of his employees did a big part of the work needed for remodeling a bathroom: demolition, replacing drywall with water-​proof concrete boards, installing new wall tiles on all three walls around the bathtub, grout, and caulk. I cannot say that the work was inexpensive, but the quality is excellent.

Had my bathtub re-​caulked by Jim the Handyman — did an amazing job, my only issue is that I felt $ 85 dollars for a job that only takes 10 minutes feels a little like robbery.

OK, let’s set the record straight, right up front, before you read the rest of this review (which I hope you will do.) I’m a homeowner who recently moved into a house in Fairfax, VA. I don’t work for this company. I don’t know the owners or workers personally. I don’t have any interest, here, other than to put out a helpful review which can assist people in finding OUTSTANDING companies who hire GOOD PEOPLE at a FAIR PRICE.
It is so difficult to find good help these days, I found it amazing that I happened to come across a small ad for Jim the Handyman, in a local shopper newspaper. Just on a whim, and as I was new to the area having no local knowledge of who’s good and reliable, I gave it a shot and ended up talking to Roz of Jim the Handyman.
For starters, Roz is awesome. She is a no-​nonsense lady with a sense of humor and an uncanny ability to work with you. Her word is her bond. She is always willing to help. But this is just for starters.
I had a crew from Jim the Handyman work on my house for two days. The crew was simply outstanding. Want to know the really cool part? Each of the people on the crew had a very high work ethic! Each of them went the extra mile to do the right thing. They did drywall repairs in two rooms loaded with furniture, and when they were done sanding and painting, there was no dust anywhere. They covered, taped, cleaned up dust bunnies… you name it. They performed at a level of service that, for me, has guaranteed the Jim the Handyman gets ALL my home repairs for the next 8 years I plan to live in Fairfax.
I called Roz upon completion of the crew’s job, and asked, «Where in the world do you still find people like this?» She said, «It isn’t easy. We go through about 40 applicants for each person we decide to hire.» It shows.

Let’s spread the word — there are enough dirtbag home repair and construction companies out there — when we find a company that gives you a great job at a fair price, and hires talented and honest people to do the work, we should reward that company with our business.
One last thing, and this is important, and this should tell you pretty much ALL you need to know about Jim the Handman’s crew. I had 4 – 5 guys and one woman show up in my house over a two day period. Do you know, that NOT ONCE, not ever, did I hear any of them use anything that could be deemed «foul» language. No F-​bombs, no anything. Gentlemen (and one lady) all.

I have had Jim the Handyman do a couple of projects around the house, and have always been happy with their work. I had a stoop that was separating from the house repaired, as well as drywall repair and painting after substantial water damage to my living room and a few other small things. I did not have the same experience as the person with the negative review — each time I’ve had work done, someone has come out, looked at what I needed done, and given me an estimate, with the work scheduled at a later date after I’ve approved the estimate. I’ve found the prices to be reasonable. The only negative is that they don’t do even light electrical or masonry work, so I can’t always get my entire «punch list» done in one fell swoop.

I highly recommend Jim The Handyman. My experience was great from start to finish. His coordinator was very kind and helpful. I called at 7PM and they were at my house at 8:30 the next morning and started the work at 11:30 after THEY went to Home Depot bought the materials. They didn’t want or ask for any down payment. The work cost exactly what they quoted and was done in a professional and timely manner. Jim was very friendly. He hung six new closet doors for me. I asked if he could do a dry wall project in my basement and he recommended I seek a larger contractor with a tram of guys. Jim’s business model is single man small jobs. He’s not cheap but the work was done well and quickly. I would recommend him to anyone.

My husband and I are in the process of turning over our apartment for the first time to tenants after our first (ever) tenants moved out. We needed some random things fixed and because we literally have such limited time to handle things while we’re in the area temporarily — we’ve needed to enlist some help for fix-​it things just to alleviate our long to-​do list. I called Jim the Handyman and spoke to Roz at the front office (she’s great — and even calls with reminders.) Michael visiting my apartment promptly in the window I was given for the repairs. He was quick, efficient and super knowledgeable about repairs (even the ones he couldn’t make himself.) Jim’s services do not include electrical and plumbing (perhaps I didn’t read the website thoroughly enough) — so I have one call to make about a switch. Overall — I was super satisfied with the level of customer service and professionalism of the staff. I did not price compare with other handyman services to know how their rates would compare (due to my lack of time in getting work done) — so I can’t comment on that — but I trusted them to give me a fair price — and I believe they did. Honestly, even if they ended up being more expensive than other places — I’d rather support a local business that’s been around for years with superb customer service absolutely any day.
