The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri:
–operates as an independent, 501©3 non-profit organization licensed by the Missouri Department of Agriculture;
–remains the only «open-admission» Shelter in the area accepting stray or owner-surrendered cats or dogs;
–provides complete medical care and behavioral assistance so surrendered dogs and cats will be wonderful candidates for their adopted forever home;
–provides low cost spay/neuters to those on assistance;
–conducts classes promoting responsible pet ownership;
–cooperates with the Purple Heart Society in the Pets for Vets program;
–offers frequent adoption specials.
History
Established in 1956.
The Humane Society of Southwest Missouri:
–was incorporated on October 19, 1956, as a non-profit organization dedicated to homeless animals;
–was originally called the Greene County Humane Society, Inc., and then changed to the Southwest Missouri Humane Society on December 30, 1978;
–held a 2005 a capital campaign to raise the money necessary to build a state-of-the-art facility;
–opened the new facility in September of 2009, changed the name to the Humane Society of Southwest Missouri.
