They are doing an amazing job for the animals and people of Springfield. When I came in to see the animals they were very helpful in describing the personality of each one and after I had decided they informed me I could place a hold I him so that they could check with the apartment to make sure I was able to adopt. The next business day I got a call say that I was clear to adopt (shows that they really do care where the animals are going).
I am now the parent of a fantastic Black Aussie Shepherd, named Chance!

Absolute pathetic joke of a place. We found a stray dog about a year ago. Brought it in to drop off because we thought that what was the responsible and right thing to do. Not in Springfield Missouri. Met by an 18 redheaded girl «manager» with a very serious attitude problem that was on a power trip due to her feelings of being in charge for the first time in her life and not knowing how to handle it. She said we had to have an appointment to drop the dog off… yes we were told we needed to go home and make an appointment and then they would let us bring the dog in. … We told her we had no place to keep the dog at home. She did not care. She was so condescending and arrogant it was amazing. We told her we were on our way out of town for vacation and this was just a dog we found and were trying to do the right thing. She did not care and said again that we needed to go home and call them for an appointment. I told her «well we will just leave the dog outside then». She said she would call the police and have us arrested. Absolutely pathetic and ridiculous that a place like this is run this way and an 18 year old girl is put in charge to make decisions and get her kicks from her perceived power.
Lesson learned; In Springfield Missouri if you try to do the right thing and help a lost animal it is your bad luck and the humane society may have you arrested.
I have lived all over the country and been to many animal shelters. Never saw one run anything like this disaster. If the volunteers and money donors could see what is going on here they would too be astonished and angry.
The real reason this place is such a complete disaster and so dysfunctional is because of the woman that runs it and responds to the Unilocal posts with «oh please just let us give you a tour» LOL. She quite obviously does not get it and is incapable of getting it. She is the same person who puts in place clueless, arrogant teenage managers in charge of the place while she is typing up responses to defend her own incompetency on this site. If it wasn’t so pathetic and tragic it would almost be funny.

I adopted a dog from this shelter a while back. The staff are very friendly and knowledgeable. They really care about the animals and finding them a good home. The building is very clean and has a wonderful layout. It is a bit loud at times but that’s expected with so many dogs.
I even visited with the cats and there is even a room where several cats just hang out all day! It’s fun to walk in there and have six or ten cats all come up to you purring! The adoption process was fairly quick. I did have to show proof that my cat was up to date with her rabies vaccine which was a simple phone call to my vet.
Overall I think this is a great place to find your new best friend!

I gave one star for a number of reasons. First, I have been trying to volunteer for a year. I’ve called, emailed, mailed in the application… No one will respond! So I finally gave up.
Next-​they make it really, really difficult to adopt a pet. The application is very detailed and they have rather high expectations for applicants considering it’s a kill shelter and the alternative is often euthanization. I understand they want the animals to go to good homes… but it’s a little ridiculous. We applied for a dog, and were denied because our two indoor cats don’t have rabies shots. Seriously?! We are willing and able to give this former stray a loving forever home… but you’d rather leave it in a loud crowded shelter with the possibility of euthanization than send it home with my family?
Their staff just seem uninterested and apathetic for the most part. They go out of their way to avoid contact with whoever they can and have this whole «don’t talk to me» vibe. Very unfriendly.
Their website rarely works and I haven’t seen a listing for adoption fees. FYI cats are $ 85 and dogs are $ 110.
So disappointed in our experience with this shelter. There have to be better places in Springfield where they will treat you like an actual human being rather than another annoying applicant.
