Apparently this market is under new management. This was the first time I had been there. We called the market around 6 to see if they would have crabs available when we arrived around 6:30pm. They said that they were closed, but would wait for us. We were confused when we arrived, because they appeared completely open(not just waiting for us). That part didn’t matter though. We were able to get our dozen crabs. We saw that they were live and were able to watch the owner cook them. He even asked each customer how they wanted theirs seasoned(light, heavy, extra heavy, etc.) The crabs were delicious! I had a couple that were a little mushy, but most of them were perfect. Only issue we had was they said it would take 6 – 10 minutes. The owner seemed to be distracted with other customers and it definitely took longer than 10 minutes(which is why I think a few came out mushy). The owner is very friendly and made it into more of an experience than just walking up and buying crabs.

I had baby back ribs, collard greens, fried chicken wings, macaroni & cheese, green beans w/onions, and mashed potatoes. The ribs just came off the smoker and were so juicy and full of smokey flavor that I regretted eating most of the above by the time I got to it. The collard greens already had a little kick to it so I didn’t use any hot sauce; it wasn’t greasy like most I’ve had. The fried wings were lightly battered and so crispy and the sauce that went with it was tart and just the right amount of sweet. I was dunking my wings in it. They make the sauce from scratch there. The mac & cheese was cheesy as I liked and green beans crispy. The mashed potatoes were creamy and obviously made from fresh potatoes. For a modest stop on the road, I can tell a lot of diligence and labor goes into thr flavorful foods prepared. I highly recommend the place! Can’t wait to go again!

A hidden gem. Since new management took over this place a month ago, it’s becoming everything that’s much needed in the area. The chef is culinary trained and serves up delicious soul food made from scratch using local produce from farmers right in the Spencerville community. Very cool. Love the fact they sell crabs and always give you more than you pay for. Also, they brought in a custom made smoker and smoke true southern barbecue everyday. They even roast whole pigs every Saturday! Awesome. Food is excellent and cheap. They’ve expanded the beer selection and prices are the lowest in town. Only downside is there isn’t really a place to sit and eat, but with food and beer this good, it’s the perfect grab and go. Sounds like the new owners have plans of expanding further. Can’t wait to see the new changes.

Love this market. Very easy to pop into off the road. Want to share what I think is a little known secret. They make fresh breakfast sandwiches & coffee in the morning with Scrapple for all you Scrapple lovers. What I just found out today was that they also make Rotisserie Chickens. I bought one earlier today while it was still cooking. It was Garlic/Lime and smelled so good I had to have it. They called me when it was ready and I went and got it, though they offered to bring it to me since I live so close. This chicken is PHENOMENAL. Its cooked to perfection, full of flavor, the meat is moist all the way through and its a BIG chicken. I love Whole Foods and their rotisserie chickens but they are very small and I always need to buy 2 to feed everyone. The chicken I got from Spencerville Market is more than enough so I can use the extra meat for chicken salad and will boil the carcass for Tetrizinni! Just found my new chicken place in an place I’ve been going to for years. I highly recommend anyone who lives in the area or passes by this market either to or from work to stop in and give the food a try. I see people lining up out the door at 7 – 11 loading up on their heated up, frozen, pre-packaged food and donuts… oh if only they knew that fresh home made food is right down the street!
