Darren and Dawn have been proud owners of Shine Salon Spa since it’s inception in late 2006. Dawn was born and both have been raised is Sparks and are happy to have the community of Sparks as our home.

Our goal as owners of Shine is to provide «Affordable Luxury… Priceless Beauty» to every guest that visits our SalonSpa. We offer a comfortable, family friendly environment with a highly trained Team of Stylists, Aestheticians, Massage Therapists and Manicurists.

Darren & Dawn both graduated from Reed High School and are raising 3 amazing children here is Sparks.

We believe in being involved in and supporting our community. Shine Aveda Concept Salon Spa continually supports the local schools, groups and organizations such as The League to Save Lake Tahoe — Keep Tahoe Blue, Children’s Miracle Network, Lena Juniper Elem., Spanish Springs High, Pack Paws, Girl Scouts, Truckee Meadows Boys and Girls Club just to name a few.

This was my first time to the salon. I’m usually a quick cuts or something generic kinda guy but me and my 8 year old needed to get trimmed up for the weekend and thought we’d try something new.
Upon entering, the aroma of essential oils fills your senses. It was very relaxing and welcoming. The front desk got us squeezed in for a last minute walk in and both my son and I were in a chair in no time.
My stylist sat me down and immediately made me feel comfortable and at ease. After gaining an understanding of how I liked to wear my hair she gave me a neck and shoulder massage with some amazing oils. It was instantaneously heaven. After my cut she took me to the wash basin and gave me a scalp massage and shampoo. I about died in the chair. So relaxing. Then off to styling. Gave me the look I was trying to achieve and offered me some much needed product to keep it going. Both my son and I were super happy with our cuts. But beyond that, it was the attention to detail and service that won me over. My entire family will be using this salon from now on. Oh!!! Best part. It’s the same price as I pay for the get in and out quick cut place but with 10x the value.

First time at Shine. Have been in search of a massage that would help incorporate my chakra balancing and tension release.
Was happy that I was able to fit into a cancelation spot same day. (Making an appointment is highly recommended)
The spa/​salon uses Aveda products so I knew I was getting quality oils to begin. The massage was amazing. I connected with Jenn right away and she made my experience exactly what I wanted it to be. balancing, enjoyable and relaxing.
I was able to purchase products that were used on me and am looking for my next visit.

I’m SO glad I came to this salon/​spa! My haircut is exactly what I asked for from Teresa, and she also did a great job at styling it. I will be back for sure :) The front desk staff was friendly as well… which is always such a big plus!

I dropped in from the Bay Area after Burning Man had playaed my hair into dusty dreads. They shined me up! Best natural looking color and highlights I have ever had in my life! She matched my natural color and I walked out looking fresher and younger, not fake. I will be coming back to Reno in 6 weeks just to get a touch up here! The relaxation room with massage chairs makes the time pass quickly and they serve relaxing tea. They can also do playa braids for Burning Man – coming back next year for that if I can only find a ticket!

I’ve been getting gel nails at Shine Aveda Concept Salon since 2010. Dawn Mullins is a magician. She is prompt, customer-​focused, professional, reliable and more! I can’t imagine ever going to someone else for nail services. I actually came to her by accident. I got acrylic nails for many years (from another salon) and suddenly developed a serious and very painful allergic reaction to the acrylic. I had gone about five years without getting my nails done at all and frankly was extremely fearful about having them done again. I had Dawn do my nails and she was so reassuring and gentle so I have been going to her ever since. The salon itself is inviting and cozy. I always feel at home there. I would give 10 stars if I could.

I came here about two weeks ago and saw Erika. She was great she colored and cut my hair and it came out so pretty. I didn’t have to wait, when I got there I got offered something to drink within minutes. The staff here is really nice and makes sure you are welcome

I’ve been here three or four times now for hair cuts, and I’m consistently happy when I leave. The staff are friendly and professional. The salon is clean and well-​kept.
Erica E. cut and styled my hair. It was a pretty big change for me, and she took time to make sure she understood what I wanted and was satisfied with the result. She is always super nice, and seems very experienced. I love my cut, and will be back again.

This was my first trip to Shine. Came on Saturday, December 6 for an 11:30 appt. For a full set of gel nails with tips and a spa pedicure with gel, glitter toes.
I was looking for a full set of gel nails and a spa pedicure with gel toes. I was looking for an aveda salon; specifically for the spa pedicure and one that could do gel nails. I planned this due to a beach vacation in a few days. I called and scheduled my full set of gel nails and rock star spa pedicure. I live an hour away so had to accomplish both in one trip.
I arrived on time and got my full set of gel nails with one person and my pedicure was with another. My nails took about 2 hours through no fault of my own. When it came time to get my spa pedicure the girl told me because my full set ran over time she would only have time to do my gel polish and not my pedicure. I fully understand there were other appointments after me and that’s why I couldn’t get the spa pedicure. None-​the-​less I am terribly dissapointed because the «spa» pedicure was the whole reason I came here.
The services I received were great. Now I am going on my beach vacation with rough feet though because through no fault of my own, I did not get what I asked for.

You know a business is great when you’ve received equally flawless services two different times. So what’s up with the ridiculous amount of filtered reviews and 3.5 stars? Unilocal YOU NEED TO FIX SOMETHING!!!
The first time I came into Shine was in 2012, the day before Thanksgiving. EVERYWHERE was booked so I made a final blind call just waiting to hear a final rejection for a full color and cut. To my suprise Shine welcomed me with open arms. I almost cried right there and then… They called a stylist who was off to accomodate me. That’s not great customer service, that’s AMAZING customer service.
Aveda is a great company and I knew that any stylist in an Aveda salon would take care of me. I asked to go darker and after a thorough consultation my stylist worked her magic. I came out with beautiful black cherry color and an amazing cut. I’ve moved to the bay area since this experience but I knew I wouldn’t be far away from Shine.
Just this weekend I booked an all over color and cut for my mom. The prices were the same from what I remembered and again we were able to make an appointment and were taken care of. Thomas at the front desk was great to see again and my mom’s stylist Kristie (I really hope I got her name right because she rocked…) did an amazing job. My mom wanted a new do especially for this new season. Instead of going to a high turnover place like AHEM AHEM ULTA, I made sure she went here. And again Shine delivered!
Thank you Shine for representing Aveda well. YOU GUYS ARE AWESOME AND I CAN’T WAIT TO COME BACK!

I would actually give 3.5 stars if I could. My Esthetician was very very nice and I thought she did a great job. The only thing I would suggest would to be to work the products into the face more. I scheduled a 90 min facial and felt like nothing was really worked in, kinda like product was just applied to my face. So just a little more aggressive would have been nice. She was knowledgeable and very friendly though.
One more thing, you NEED to get music in the room. I could hear everything that was going on in the salon despite everyone was pretty quiet especially for a salon. Music not only allows the client to relax it blocks out any outside noises. 90 minutes of complete silence was a little strange/​awkward.

I am very torn while writing this review. Erika is awesome and provided a great color and cut. I would never recommend the waxing service. My brows immediately broke out from their unsanitary waxing products, or what they used was so toxic, it made my face break out on contact. I left the salon with the bright red rash and two full days later, my brow line is still a red, rashy mess. My hair looks great, but it’s hardly consolation for the painful, itchy, red brow line that shows no signs of healing. Hello, Health Department, I have a concern…

I love that this spa is in the middle of a strip mall (it’s in with the Raley’s on Pyramid and McCarran), but that you don’t even realize that you’re in a strip mall. Once you are taken back into the relaxation room before your treatment (where you get tea and a massage chair), you wouldn’t even know that you were surrounded by other stores. This is my second time here (the first time was at their old location), but I found this time to be infinitely better! I had two treatments from Amber before my wedding and everyone told me I was just glowing! Also, the pricing wasn’t bad for a spa.

The new salon is located in the Scolaris complex on McCarran. Apparently they’ve responded to the cramped spaces with a new location and it seems to work out well – no issues with chemicals or feeling cramped. Ceilings are very high so I can’t imagine there are issues with aeration.
I brought in a picture on my iPad of how I wanted my hair cut and Rachelle nailed it to a T. There were awkward moments, in that the last time I’ve ever been to a salon they didn’t do shoulder massages, at least for guys,. I got the feeling that they were going to hit me up for product but they stopped short. I’d rather they didn’t but I’m sure they’re pushed to do so.
Paid $ 20 to go from a medium man’s cut to a short man’s cut.
Overall experience was pretty good. I may shop around in the future for a better personality fit in that I haven’t had a haircut in 25 years but if I go somewhere else and they screw it up I’ll go back to a sure thing with Shine.

I love this place! Rachelle Messina is wonderful. I get my cute rock star toes done from her and they last for weeks!!! She is also an AWESOME stylist! The salon is cute and clean, and the girls all seem very nice. The prices are awesome considering it is all Aveda products. Other Aveda salons in Reno Sparks charge almost double for the same services.

I’ve had very long hair for years and decided it was time to get rid of it. I got a Groupon for Shine and made an appointment. The day I was there, Laura was the only one there, everyone else was at a convention in San Francisco, so I can’t speak for the ventilation as another reviewer mentioned. The salon space is small, but I didn’t find it cramped. The décor is contemporary and natural. The product line is wonderful and the staff is knowledgeable about them.
The last two times I had my hair done in an «upscale» salon were both disappointing. One time, the stylist talked the whole time about herself and did only a basic trim on my long hair and charged me $ 39. The second time, the stylist didn’t say anything and did only what I told her to do. I got better service at the Supercuts for $ 20!
When I sat down with Laura, she took the time to look at the pictures I brought, look at me and my hair and actually make suggestions about what would look good. I had brought a couple friends with me and she very graciously let them hang out and take pictures. Laura cut almost a foot off my hair and the salon arranged to donate the hair for me. The haircut was exactly what I wanted, even though I didn’t know exactly what I wanted! It looks great on me and works great with my very curly hair. Not everyone does well with curly hair, but Laura took the curl into account when cutting and kept scrunching it as she cut to see where it would curl up. She recommended product that worked with my new style. I am thrilled with the results and will definitely be back!

I thought this place was great. I had been looking for not only a good stylist but also a clean and professional salon in the Sparks area and in that search, I stumbled upon Shine Salon!
I ended up making an appointment with Laura and she was truly wonderful! Not only does she do great hair but her personality is great too and she made me feel so comfortable!
The salon was easy to find and had great parking. It was clean and they were friendly! What more can you ask for?!
I’d definately refer anyone to Shine Salon!

The atmosphere is cramped and toxic. The styling stations are WAY too close together in a small room. The ventilation is poor and the fumes from the acrylics and chemicals are nauseating. This alone was a deal breaker for me and not what I expected from a salon that uses Aveda products.
Then during my haircut, the stylists complained about how they would have to start pampering customers with hand and scalp massages. Wow, they would have to actually pamper the customers? How unreasonable. I will not be going back.
