History
Established in 2001.
Karl Bruner established Downeast Friendship Sloop Charters after earning his USCG Captain’s license by logging thousands of sea miles along the Maine Coast and the Caribbean.
Friendship Sloops are the original lobster boats — built when lobster fishing in Maine was done under sail in the late 1800s. We operate the oldest operating Friendship Sloop, the «Alice E.», which was built in 1899. In addition to our fleet of sailing vessels, we operate the «Elizabeth T.», an original wooden lobster boat that we use to provide demonstrations to guests on hauling lobster traps.
Downeast Friendship Sloop Charters are committed to maintaining the rich tradition of sailing in Maine, and take pride in the detail and craftsmanship of our vessels.

Business Owner
Karl is a USCG-licensed captain who grew up sailing on the coast of Maine. While at Colorado College, he earned a degree in Geology and studied in New Zealand. After graduating, he thru-hiked the Appalachian Trail and then returned to Maine to work in the Windjammer industry in Camden. He began working toward his USCG Master’s license by serving as a deckhand aboard a turn-of-the-century wooden schooner sailing from Maine to the Caribbean. Since then he has logged thousands of bluewater miles by delivering private yachts between the Caribbean and the East Coast.
