A girl named Seaborn Most lighthouse have weird and spooky tales and stories about them. Most frequently involved ghosts, ship wrecks and storms. The Hendrick’s Head Lighthouse has two such famous stories that have persevered throughout the years. The first involves a huge March storm back in 1875. A ship was lost on the treacherous rocks near the lighthouse and although the keepers tried a rescue and looked for survivors it became obvious that that nobody could survive a disaster of that magnitude. Then as the keepers were about to give up all hope they noticed a couple of small bundles tied together floating toward the shore. When they gathered it in they were shocked to find a small infant girl inside, quite unharmed. No other survivors were found and the identity of the girl was never established. The lighthouse keepers adopted the baby girl and named her Seaborn. Although the veracity of the story is doubted by some the records do indicate that a girl named Seaborn did indeed live at the lighthouse during that time. The other story involves a ghost. Lots of lighthouses have ghosts and this particular ghost is an unknown woman that was found floating off the lighthouse in the early part of the 20th century. She was well dressed and quite beautiful but her identity was never discovered. The cause of her demise was listed as suicide because of the lead weights found in her pockets. Over the years many people have claimed to have seen a beautiful woman in fine clothing walking along the cliffs and rocks by the lighthouse but always disappears when approached. Of course she is usually seen on very foggy mornings or right before storms. The lighthouse is located on the Sheepscot River and is indeed a treacherous place with lots of rocks. storms and nasty currents. The first light was built back in 1829 and then completely rebuilt in 1875 when huge storms severely damaged it. The light is 39 feet tall and originally had a fifth order Fresnel Lens that was removed when the light was automated. The light is now private and the present owners did a very meticulous job in restoring the light to it’s original condition. Unfortunately it is on private property and can’t really be closely approached but great views can be seen if the observer gets a bit creative. Lighthouses are historic, lovely and sometimes spooky places that always have a lot of cool stories and tales around them. Some I believe and others I doubt. But I choose to believe that the story of Seaborn is just to wonderful and unique not to be true.
