Secretary of State

Please note I used the online text phone reservation system to get an appointment to change my license. I saw the super long line to check in and the very long wait time number calling system for people without appointments. Make an appointment online.
Located in a semi-​run down large multi sided stripmall. Slightly hard to find the correct side to pull into the correct parking area.
The text system worked great, I was sent updates that said my appointment may be delayed, but in the end it wasn’t. I went in and 2 minutes after my appointment time I was summoned to a station via the notice screen and text at the same time. 5 minutes later my address was changed and I was out the door. Friendly, fast service right on time.

Who likes to visit the Secretary of State. It’s something we tolerate and must do to be legally living in this state. Or something like that. I’m sure I’m generalizing way too much.
Whatever the case, I’ve been to this particular SOS several times and for the most part the employees have been really nice and helpful. No one’s been out of the question rude and obnoxious, I’d call that a win.
If you just need your registration renewed, there’s a machine on the far left side of the room, so when you walk in, just walk straight ahead past the line, and you can do it with a credit card, without them checking your insurance information. How awesome. And you’ll be done in like 2 minutes.
If you need anything else done, just be sure to get in line online a few days before you go and if you go 5 – 10 minutes before your appointment time, you should be golden. How awesome is that.
Maybe it’s just that I haven’t had horrible experiences. It’s a shame, reading a lot of the others’ reviews that they’ve had such bad experiences. But I’ve never been there more than an hour, and have always gotten what I needed out of them. Once again, for an SOS, I call that a win.

If you could give negative stars the Secretary of State would receive them. I guess relative to other SOS it’s about average but compared to any other business in this country it’s a painful experience.
Wait, wait, deal with a rude state employee, wait some more, wait again, fill out a form, wait, write a few Unilocal reviews, deal with another rude employee, (sorry to bother you) go out to car to get license even though they have all the info on there computer including your picture, wait again than give them money and you are on your way :-).

This is the slowest and worst SOS I have ever been to. The employees need to be trained in what the word «work» means. There are more than 20 people waiting in line and the employees behind the counter are doing anything but their job. No respect of others time.

I wish I had a morsel of positivity others did when visiting this location. I’ve been here twice now, and it’s been equal parts hell and dread both times. The first, they handed me number three, and they were on number 30. Awesome. Then their «national system» went down, and they couldn’t process any IDs.
The next time was almost identical. I was handed number 71, and they were on 95. Awesome. After waiting nearly two hours, their «national system» went down again. I was told my wait time would most likely be anywhere between thirty minutes and three hours, and I had a job to get back to. More and more people were coming into the office and taking numbers, but did they let these people know that their «national system» was down? Of course not.
The employees here were disgruntled as ever, but not nearly as disgruntled as the poor people were who had to wait while they sorted out their cesspool of a mess, which never happened, at least in the additional hour I waited.

I dread going to the DMV/​Secretary of State the way technopeasants fear an all-​day trip to the Apple Store.
I went to the SOS to transfer an out-​of-​state title and license, and obtain new tags. It so happened I picked the snowiest day for two weeks, it was tricky to find, the ATM was out of order, and my strategic plan to take an early lunch was shared by other office workers. All spelled a possible recipe for disaster, but good customer service and patience saved the day. I made a quick dash across the parking lot to the Charter One bank to use the ATM, and the helpful aide at the check-​in quickly shuttled me off to the right place.
The SOS wait was a bit lengthy, but ample seating and the friendly staff eased the discomfort. Once you get up there, the process is quick and painless, just the way I prefer. I was whisked through getting a license, though turns out I lacked the right insurance document to show Michigan’s no-​fault insurance. My picture was snapped twice (hey, I blinked!) and she had me ready to go in no time at all. The agent informed me I was better off waiting on transferring my title until I had the no-​fault page, and she gave me a «get out of jail free» pass for when I returned, so I could skip the line. I didn’t even realize these things existed outside of spy thrillers! Talk about a time saver to avoid being stalled in the seating area.
I came back a week later on my second trip, armed with the title and license. The wait was a bit longer because they were swamped with three difficult cases at the registration desk, and I came to find out I didn’t even need to check in. I just had to wait on the grey square. My plates were in my hands, title registered in Michigan, and that park sticker slapped on in less than ten minutes.
I’ll probably do all my transactions from now on online, but this is a handy full-​service office with some great, hardworking employees who do their best to get you through one of those necessities quickly.

I have been to this location several times and the employees have always been very helpful.
Tonight I needed to go in to renew my registration tags. I got there and even though there were quite a few people waiting they got through everyone really quickly. Everyone who works there are very nice. It never takes me longer than 30 minutes to get it and out!

It’s the only day in life you hate your birth date and love it all at the same time. Time to renew your license plate tags. That dreaded trip to the Secretary of State. Oh well, no need in prolonging the inevitable. I walk in, «Hello, please follow the line to the first service desk». Hello? Please? Where am I. OK, here we go. I’m sure that was just an intro to soften the blow for what’s going to come later. I inform the service rep of what I need to do. She smiles. A smile? Then she says, «No problem». I hand her my paper work, she gives me a total, she takes my payment, gives me a receipt and smiles again and then, this is the kicker, she says, «Have a great day and Happy Birthday». WF*? I have just experienced something that has often been aloof when it comes to government services, SERVICE! Who knew? Best visit to the S.O.S. (ironic initials) yet. It’s no fluke either. I suggested this location to a friend and she had the same experience. One in a million!
