History

Established in 1977.

Lum Optometry has been serving South San Francisco since 1977. Dr. Randall Lum received his Doctor of Optometry degree from the University of California, Berkeley.

Dr. Lum received two Bachelor of Science degrees, one in Biology from Santa Clara University and one in Physiological Optics from U.C. Berkeley.

Dr. Lum is board certified to diagnose and treat eye diseases, eye infections and eye allergies with prescription medications.

We have always offered our patients the newest frame and lens technology and the newest contact lenses designs available.

Dr. Lum was born and raised in Honolulu, Hawaii where he attended Punahou School (President Obama’s alma mater). Outside of the office Dr. Lum enjoys traveling, reading and spending family time with his wife and two children.

Dr. Lum is a member of the San Mateo, California and American Optometric Associations. He is also a member of the California Optometric Laser Associates. Dr. Lum has previously worked at North East Medical Center, San Francisco Veterans Administration Hospital and Kasier Permanente San Francisco.

Dr. Lum has also traveled to Guatemala and the Philippines with Volunteer Optometric Services to Humanity to provide free eye examination and eye glasses to the needy. Locally Dr. Lum does volunteer eye exams at the Samaritan House in San Mateo, the AOA infantSee program, the So. SF Lions Club & California Vision Foundation.

I really like Dr Lum, and his staff is so nice. I have a very slight prescription and rarely wear my glasses and I never feel like he pushes me to get new ones, even when my insurance covers it. He just encourages me to wear what I have when I feel I need it.
I’ve been going to him for several years and now my kids see him, too. He’s great with small kids (my son started going to him at 2)– I feel like he really understands their limits and is very patient! Plus he has lots of toys and kids things to look at, and they get to pick a prize from a treasure chest at the end of their appointment.
I highly recommend!

My family has been going to Dr. Lum since he came to the office in SSF at least 20 years. My daughter lives in San Jose and still will come to his SSF office. We use his services for eyeglasses, contacts and office exams. He has a very competent staff and they work well with our vision service insurance.

What a Great Doc! Office staff is so friendly. I have Kaiser insurance, but I will not stray from Dr Lum. My family and I have been going for at least 15 years. The office is Always Clean, friendly and always on the up and up! Dr Lum Always has Awesome Disney Tips too for the avid Disney goer!

This is a great bunch. They are always smiling, helpful and just plain great. I had come a few times to get my glasses fixed and they do it right away and do it right. I’m not changing optometrist any time soon. Keep up the good work.

I have only good things to say about this place!!! We’ve been going to Dr. Lum for maybe 8 years now… maybe more… our entire family sees Dr. Lum, and we are very happy with every visit we have had. He knows how to deal with kids and adults alike. Its sometimes hard to find a good place to go as an adult when you have to take all of your kids along, and you worry about them causing a distraction or being bored while they wait. Never at this office. There is a nice kids area to entertain the children while the grown up gets an eye exam. And they never want to leave when I’m done! I’ve never been overcharged, or treated rudely. His staff is WONDERFUL! So I have a hard time where negative experiences might come from… maybe the person was having a bad day before they came in, or maybe that person was the rude one! I really highly recommend this office!

Yes. Nice people and nice customer service. I’ll give them 5 stars for that. I gave them 2 because they try to push you to buy more than I wanted. They had a lot of test done and made me buy a year worth of contacts which I told them I only need them when I play sports. By the end of the day, I owe them $ 500.00 with my optical insurance!!! I never went back.

I’d give additional stars if I could, so I’m surprised to read the negative reviews for Dr. Lum. He’s been my doctor for two years now and recently I brought my 2 year old son in for his first exam. Dr. Lum and his staff are very nice and accommodating in every way. They now have a new feature where you can make appointments online which is so convenient.
My most recent appointment my son fell asleep just as we pulled up to the office, naturally. The staff was able to still do my exam with him sleeping in my arms. He woke up just in time for Dr. Lum to do his exam and he was very thorough in explaining everything he was doing, what he was looking for and he was very gentle with my son. Thank goodness he didn’t freak out! He also has various toys in his office which kept my son busy so I could have my eyes checked… extra stars there!
As far as the selection they carry, I feel that it’s just right. I mean, I’m sure if there was double the amount someone would complain that they were overwhelmed with the selection. The good thing is that they may have a pair you like and if you ask if it comes in other colors they can easily check and give you your options. I’ve been to another optometrist where the staff would tell you that certain frames wouldn’t look good on you, so I like the fact that you’re able to try on anything and see for yourself and if you want their opinion they’re arms length away to ask.
Super bonus stars for the travel tips! You name a place where you’ll be traveling to and he’s got tips, tricks, discounts, you name it! Plus he’s a Disneyland enthusiast like myself. Can’t go wrong!

I have worn glasses since I was two and Dr. Lum is one of the best optometrists I’ve had.
I first heard about him when my husband, who is uninsured, signed up for a state program that provides free eye exams. My husband was very pleased, so when it came time to make my yearly appointment, I made one here.
I told the doctor I’d been having problems with eye strain and headaches. Previous doctors had tried and failed to fix the problem. Dr. Lum got right to the bottom of it and after over a year with this prescription, all headaches and eye strain are gone.
I just had my second appointment this week, and everyone was lovely. I was even greeted by my name when I walked in. I love this place and I recommend him to everyone.

So, i came here despite what I had read because I had been coming here for awhile. That came back to bite me in the @$(#. I will admit, a lot of the time was spend suggesting products rather than talking about me. I was able to get over that. However, when I went to pay, I was charged an extra $ 49.99 for a pair of lenses that he said I could barrow. Never said it would cost me. Had I known that, I would have just kept my pair on. When I asked about the charge, the receptionist, quickly blurped out the reasoning for the charge and stating the definition of the charge like it had been rehearesed several times. Rather than say it is for your contacts that you are wearing right now, they said it was for the mechanical device that you put inside your body that we are charging for. This is the first time I have ever heard of a place that charges you for a sample pair, let alone $ 49. I wonder where the money goes. I know times are tough, but $ 49.9 for a pair of contacts. I’ll be getting my frames somewhere else thanks to that!

Came as referral from a good friend of mine.
Pros:
Staff is friendly and nice
Cons:
–Felt like the eye appointment was sales driven to get me to purchases contacts over glasses
–Picking a frame felt rushed. Person was not interested in making sure I got what I wanted.
–Glasses broke 3 days after picking up
–Took over a week to get them fixed
–Didn’t receive a call back as promised when they came back in
–Called in and left a message. No return call.
–Called in again. Glasses were there. No explanation as to why I didn’t get a call back.
–Voiced dissatisfaction to an older woman working (she was nice) and was told she would talk to the Doctor and have him call me.
–Doctor called me but didn’t apologize or even address my issue.
End.

With my bad vision and living around the south san francisco area, I found in Lum Optometry a professional staff and a courteous Optometrist. I’ve been going here for years and with my busy schedule, I appreciate the quick eye exam and the updated equipment. The selection of frames and sunglasses is a good mix of high end to more affordable options. For those with Flex-​spending, they will work with you.

I’m so surprised this office has had bad reviews. Myself and family has been seeing Dr. Lum for a few years now and every experience has been a great one. Dr. Lum is really patient and I believe thorough. He’s awesome with young children too. I’ve received contacts & eyewear from him with no problem and rather quickly too. He doesn’t try to prescribe and sale things that truly aren’t needed.
I’ve referred people here and they’ve had great experiences too. They went over with me step by step what my insurance covers and what my out of pocket expenses were which weren’t bad at all.
Dr. Lum & staff are great. I guess you can’t please everyone all of the time.

So my friend that used to work my former optometrist now works here. Thank goodness bc now I have a better optometrist. Dr. Lum is very informative and friendly which makes me trust him and his staff better than the optometrists I’ve had before.
I’m usually very weary or Dr’s and am a very untrusting consumer so to have someone provide me with information and why i need to do something makes me feel comfortable. He says he’s very informative, sometimes to the point where patients don’t want to know, but i say knowledge is power.

Went there one time and that was enough for me to know there wouldn’t be a next time. Dr. Lum charged me extra out of pocket for what should have been covered through my vision program. I think it was in the area of $ 30 or so. This is my second bad experience with optometrists where they try to mark up their prices so you end up paying above your insurance deductible. Just plain bad business and dishonesty. Stay away from this place.

I would have to disagree with the previous review here. I actually had a great experience there. I usually don’t like going to any type of health exams unless I need to. Like this instance, I really needed to see the eye doc. I had a small scar on my eye from an infection and was quite scared that it might be something bad. So, not only was it a routine eye exam, but I also needed to to figure out what’s going on.
This was my first time here and found them through VSP. When I first called in, the popular times to schedule was booked for like 2 weeks. So, I immediately thought, wow this guy is popular. During my visit, Dr. Lum’s assistant was very nice and welcoming. A great first impression for any business. Went through the first part of the procedure fine and she was very patient with me. Then on to Dr Lum, he was very informative and resourceful, as any doctor should be. He was also very patient and took the time to make sure I understood everything. He does talk fast, but repeats to make sure you got it. I felt that he’s a lot more experienced and very up to date with all things eye. In my opinion, much better than Kaiser.
So the person that reviewed before me here thought maybe he was rushing you, I think it’s just the way he speaks. I’ve actually been to quite a few eye doctors, I usually end up leaving their place like I had to do a task. But here, I didn’t feel that way. I’m actually recommending him to my relative and friends.

DON’T COME HERE IF YOU CAN AVOID IT! Lum was fine, he seemed like a really nice guy. His office people SUCK. I picked out my glasses after he decided on my perscription. AFTER 6 OFFICE VISITS AND 2 MONTHS, I HAVE NOTHING. I picked out a frame that wasn’t in their office, so they made me come back 2 weeks later to say I liked it… Waited another 2.5 weeks before it came in… THEY WERE CRACKED. Can’t believe that whoever processes these don’t check them when they come in. SHE WANTED ME TO STAY TO GET THEM FITTED. A week after that, I went back for them cause they «rushed» the order. I inspected them for cracks, they were fine. Told her they were too tight, so she went to the back and adjusted them. When she came back, there were cracks everywhere in the lense!!! SHE SUGGESTED I TAKE THEM HOME, maybe so at least I have SOMETHING. I said, No, I want a full refund. NO APOLOGIES!!! DON’T WASTE YOUR TIME. I’VE HAD BETTER LUCK WITH LENS CRAFTERS.
