History

Established in 2012.

Out in the Open Adventures is the re-​incarnation of an outdoor adventure company previously established by the same owner in 1995, Luna Adventures.

Maine

Our signature sea kayak holidays are based in Portland, Maine. We can’t think of anywhere else we would want to be for the summer!

We love working with private groups, and we always manage to find something for everyone. Let us help you plan your next group adventure; please contact us for more information.

Colorado (Winter)

There is no denying our love affair with the West, and

there is a very good reason we base in Boulder, Colorado for part of the year. Warm weather and bright blue sky means we can pretty much bike and lounge in outdoor seating year — round while taking advantage of the snowfall beyond the Front Range within an hour’s drive. Paradise? We think so!

International

Piper’s background includes over a decade as English faculty in boarding and day schools, international exchange and domestic and international programming, leadership development, high and row ropes course instruction, coaching nordic and alpine skiing, soccer, lacrosse, sculling, fencing, and kayaking, the Business Division of Apple, Inc., Sea Kayak Guide for LL Bean’s Outdoor Discovery School, and extensive adventure travel.

Piper is Wilderness First Aid certified, a Registered Maine Guide, and a member of the Maine Association of Sea Kayak Guides and Instructors, Professional Maine Guides Association, and Maine Island Trails Association.

When not immersed in everything Out in the Open Adventures — more than a full time endeavor — she is reading, writing, and enjoying the great outdoors in Boulder, Colorado, and Casco Bay, Maine.

My husband and I were in Portland, Maine for a family wedding and had a day to explore. We love to go on various adventures and didn’t want to miss a fun day on a kayak. We had a wonderful time and Piper was great and extremely accommodating! She was super friendly, informative and let us take a leisurely kayak ride in the harbor to Bug’s Lighthouse and back. I would highly recommend if you’re in Portland, looking for a fun activity and a chance to learn more about the area. Thanks Piper!

Kevin and Piper provided an excellent adventure in Portland harbor, despite our last minute booking. Safe, relaxing, and fun, largely because of their expertise and lively banter. Perfect tour guides for a unique, waterfront view of my hometown.

My girlfriend and I recently traveled to Maine for vacation and enjoyed every minute of our trip. Part of our trip was an early morning kayak trip across Casco Bay courtesy of Out in the Open Adventures. The guides — Piper, Kevin, and Brian were all fantastically helpful and professional.
Piper, our leader for the morning and registered Maine guide, fielded pretty much every question we threw at her. Suffice it to say that Piper is personable, funny, and hella knowledgeable. Though we already had an idea of a few great places to visit, she gave us suggestions on the best, least touristy beaches to visit, the perfect spot to enjoy a classy libation (with a view), and a choice pizza spot.
I found it ridiculously hard NOT to enjoy Maine, but if you’re looking for an added bonus-​enjoy some time on the water with Out in the Open Adventures. An additional endearing note-​they donate a portion of your tour cost to a great cause — helping improve the lives of homeless LGBT youth.

A sunset tour that is perfect for a beautiful day. If you are looking for kayaking in Portland this company is definitely the first to contact, whether you’re an experienced kayaker or not. The employees, Piper and Kevin, are extremely well informed about their jobs and the surrounding area. They were also very patient teaching my friends and I the basics of rowing because most of us did not have much if any experience kayaking. The kayaks and equipment were new and rutters were provided on the kayaks so turning the kayak was easier. They also give you water guns to use against youre friends! Overall we had a great time travelling with Piper as she told us about her job and the city of Portland. Just give them a call and set up an appointment, they were very cooperative and were a pleasure to meet. They also donate a portion of their total profit to not-​for-​profits focusing on LGBT youth, and are very passionate about the charities they donate to. An amazing time with amazing people, easily the highlight of my trip to Portland!

This was the highlight of my trip to Portland by far! We were looking for a last minute kayaking trip and I couldn’t have been happier with what we found. Definitely worth every penny. I called in the morning for a sunset tour and Piper was more than accommodating. Once we got to the place where we were going to start our trip, my friends and I were instantly greeted with a smile from Piper and Kevin. She let just my 5 friends do our own tour, and it was such a great experience the entire time. First, Piper offered to take pictures the whole ride out there, which was great! Next, she took us to this old WW1 building on its own island and let us explore for as long as we wanted. We all took our time on the ride back and were able to enjoy an incredible evening and a picture perfect sunset. Additionally, Piper couldn’t have been more patient with us either. Not all of my friends were experienced and she took the time to make sure we were comfortable paddling and didn’t rush us at all. She also gave us awesome food and drink places to go to at night!
Overall, if you’re in Portland and are looking for an awesome kayaking experience, you MUST use this company. It was such a fun experience. She also donates a portion of the fee to homeless LGBT youth, she’s awesome!
Again, it was the highlight of our trip and would absolutely recommend this company to anyone!
