Junior High School 226 Virgil I Grisson

Omg, honestly attending this school was one the best experiences I’ve had. I graduated from there in 2012 and had a wonderful time there. Yeah of course some people in the school are bad but every school has bad students. But luckily, I was in a ARP class which is an advanced honors class. So the people in my class weren’t really bad at all. Everyone in my class got along with each other and had sooo much fun together. Times I’ll never forget. My teachers were great. Especially Mr. Moses, Mr. Wood, Mr. Sugrim, Mr. Angelo, and that’s really it I quess. Those teachers really cared weather you passed it failed and would do everything in their power to make sure you passed, especially Mr. Wood. He was a really good math teacher and made everything much easier. I had so much fun in this school in 7^th and 8^th grade!!!
But times weren’t always that fun, 6^th frade was one of my worst experience. It was so boring and everyone was so annoying and the teachers weren’t the best. Many people agreed with me that sixth grade was the worst year in 226. In 6^th we also had soo many books and our backpacks were huge and heavy! (but by 7^th grade teachers weren’t that mean and I literally only had like one notebook and a folder in 8^th grade!) We also went on nearly 16 trips in 6^th grade! No in serious, 16! But still even with all those trips I hated 6^th grade and wished I could transfer. BUT IM GLAD I STAYED BECAUSE 7TH AND 8TH GRADE WERE ONE OF THE BEST TIMES OF MY LIFE AND HAD SO MUCH FUN WITH MY FRIENDS!
So if your apply to this school or applying your child here, remember no matter what they go through in 6^th grade; 7^th and 8^th grade would be better and they’ll enjoy it. (Also the 6^th graders are in a separate area than the older kids and the 6^th graders are sheltered like babies) So I recommend this school. If your not in ARP in 6^th grade, try to get 90s in all your classes do when you go to 7^th grade you’ll be placed in an ARP class. And being an ARP student wasn’t all that fun since we had Mr. hernandèz. He gave so much homework and was… When you go there and get him as a teacher you’ll know what I mean lol. Loved this soo much and I’ll never forget all the friends I’ve made and the memories we built.

And I DEFINETLY agree with the other review about the homework problem. And I know for a fact her son/​daughter has Mr. Hernandez or some of the teachers I had. I thought I was the only one that felt this way when I attended this school. They honestly over load on the homework (cough cough mr. Hernandez) he use to give us a death load of homework over the breaks and if you missed one thing he failed you. I even started a petition which received nearly 70 signatures and had a many reason why the homework thing was wrong and how it affected us, but I can’t even remember what happened to the petition I think someone list it or something. So for that mom who wrote that review, start a petition! But other than the homework problem this a great school!
In the end, great school (except for 6^th grade and homework) I highly recommend sending your child here. Just make sure they know who their friends are and stick with the good crowd!

This school is really a big disappointment especially since they got a new principle who seems eager for success.
Now don’t get me wrong, the school has improved over the past couple of years in «some areas», but some of the things they still imply is really ridiculous.
My child goes there and normally gets 3 hours of home work every day. Its even worst on the weekends. And between dinner, a shower and homework he goes to sleep after 10pm every night. How can a child perform like this every God day? he is only 12 for peat sake.
There is also a few teachers there who you would question how they got jobs being teachers, (Eg: Mr. Ali)…
Also, imagine, your child has a week break (winter recess) and the school gives them a package to last them the entire week !!! … I mean, its nice to keep kids in tuned especially for the summer holidays which is rather long, but come on, they give them equivalent work for the time off period.
Whats the point of having a break if you have to do more or less the same thing you are breaking from?
Now my kid is burnt up and just cannot function how he/​she should. …
All these teachers focus on is saving their jobs and show no personal interest in your child.
May I remind you that there is not enough work you can give a kid that will improve he or she if the parent is not taking an active role in the kids life and schooling.
Furthermore, when do my kid get time to go to karate, soccer, swimming classes or any extra curricular activities like normal kids living in Long Island (for example) do… ?
No where else in the country are schools ridiculous as the ones in NY where the teachers are constantly under pressure to save their jobs and in return they burn out your kids.
There must be some balance and yes, home work and school is very important to kids so please do not miss-​quote me… however, there must be a better way and in the benefit of the kids, not a bloody pissing competition!!!
Now they are telling me my kids will not get a winter recess (in February) because of hurricane sandy because they now have to make it up because of the 4 days lost during that period… PLEASE !!! … the Mayor just wants to justify teacher’s salary, that’s all.
Don’t get me wrong, I do however like the principle, she is very friendly and approachable… but her approach to improve the school must be a little better and, … get the kids out on the track sometimes, a little change in environment is good too.
Michael Bloomberg is the most inconsiderate, selfish and unreasonable person/​Mayor. He doesn’t know what real life is, he is hard headed too.
The NY system is a big dump. And we could do so much better but we sit here and accept this corrupt system.
My kid even told me that the gym teacher there is busy gossiping with other teachers during gym class and is not interested in teaching the kids anything. They just get to do what ever they chooses even if its standing with each other talking about video games. What a shame indeed.
