La Promesa

We went to this restaurant before heading back home, Good Customer Service, Clean, Fresh Food! I had the Menudo and it was GOOD!

The quality of the food was great especially for the low price! 1 burrito americano, 1 asada chimichanga, side of rice and beans, 2 sodas and complimentary chips was just under $ 22. My only complaint is that the burritos did not come with enough meat. The lack of meat was shocking. And, sadly there were no jalepenos in sight. What’s a meal without jalepenos? Dinning area was very clean and appealing. Staff was very friendly.
I read some complaints regarding the thickness of the chips. Chips were slightly thicker, yet not the thickness of a tostada, but still just as yummy.

I went to this restaurant alone for dinner based on the nice ratings on Unilocal.I was disappointed. The place is truly a hole in the wall operation, in a not favorable way.
You order at a counter. I spent $ 10 just on one dinner dish. It was not tasty, and I am used to hotter Mexican food. Rice was wet; beans were mushy and bland; chips were thick and hard; portions were small. Plastic utensils; self served low quality salsa in small plastic tub. No alcohol drinks. Place was clean though.
Only one other table was occupied by a local family who are friendly with the server/​owner. Others locals came in and stood around for take outs.

Tiny place but great food! We came as a party of 20 and received excellent service. We all ordered different food and were all very pleased. Definately coming back on our next trip back to Tahoe!

I eat here multiple times per week. Hands down the best Mexican place in South Lake Tahoe. I have had everything on the menu at least one time.

Ordered two super burritos wet style. Flavor was good but not much meat to speak of. Service was good people were nice. Wouldn’t come again.

Mad authentico! Atmosphere was basic… But let’s face it the food is what keeps you coming back, and the food was delicious.

Awesome, delicious, inexpensive. It’s everything you want from a taqueria! I got a machaca super burrito and it was filling and well done :)
the salsa was also spot on.
I got custard empanadas on the way out and it was NOT a mistake ;)

Delicious and affordable food in a comfortable setting. Al pastor enchiladas were possibly the best I’ve ever had. My dad loved his fish tacos and my mom thinks her carne Asada was quite good.

So good! I grew up in a Mexican restaurant in so cal and for Tahoe this is as good as it gets! The food is fresh and very tasty! Me and my family eat here at least once a week. The prices are very affordable and the people are very nice.

The super chicken burrito wet/​with red sauce is amazing. I have zero complaints. It took my a while to find my favorite Mexican place in town, and this is it. Tried the carnitas tacos, not for me as they use cubed pork. But having grown up in Oakland I feel I know a thing or two about good burritos.
The tres leches cake is great too, homemade and helps cool your mouth down after the burrito.

Strange vibe walking in the door. We kind of just got stared at by the lady at thw counter. She gave us menus and waited… Meanwhile, the phone started ringing… loudly, as it was hanging on the wall right next to us. Somehow she was able to ignore it. I asked her if she needed to get that and she replied, «No» and it just kept on ringing. Like seriously, person on the other end, if u call a restaurant and the phone rings 30 times, just hang up and call back in a few minutes. I couldn’t focus on what to order because that loud ass phone was ringing in my ear and she was standing there staring at me while I stared at the menu!
Despite all of that, the tacos were decent. Chicken was super dry, though flavorful. Asada and pastor were respectable. Orchata was OK as well.

Shredded beef taquitos combo was amazing! Such good flavor! The rice and beans had good flavor as well. My husband had the carne asada burrito and said it was one of the best he had ever had. We were greatly impressed! The family that runs it is very nice as well. We will definitely be back

Rockin food with the essence of homemade. The agua fresca is pretty great. Friendly service. Reasonable prices.

On our spontaneous trip to Tahoe, the family wanted burgers for dinner. I don’t do burgers so I scouted out this place. Boy am I glad I did! This tiny place is tucked away in the same parking lot as CVS (to the left). The directions led me astray but alas I followed the advice of a fellow Unilocaler and was able to find La Promesa. I was glad to see some vegetarian options. I ordered the veggie chimichanga and it did not disappoint. I am not 100% sure the beans are vegetarian but since I am not a diligent veg head, I didn’t mind. There was NOT an overwhelming flavor of lard or anything so the beans *could* be vegetarian — if it matters, I suggest asking. My husband finished his burger and was stealing bites of my food. I didn’t mind because I had enough to share! Give this place a try!

Found La Promesa by chance on a trip to South Lake Tahoe in late September 2013.
We drove into this shopping center to flip a u-​turn and caught a glimpse of this little diamond… tucked into the back of the strip mall.
My husband LOVES Mexican food and immediately pulled over to investigate and see what «The Promise» (English translation) was all about. I thought it was cute he came back to the car with a green chili burrito and two peices sweet bread. We soon learned what «the promise» is all about. It’s a promise to offer the most authentic, fresh, and delicious Mexican food you will find in Tahoe.
We came back the following day and enjoyed dinner in their small but cozy dinning room. Had they been open earlier on our final morning in Tahoe, we would have eaten there on our way out of town. We look forward to dinning here again on our next trip.
The restaurant, staff, and menu are no frills… nothing fancy… just a little «hole in the wall» offering good food.
A huge plus is how reasonably priced everything is… if you can, drop by and give them a try.

I love the chimichangas here hands down! Definitely one of my favs in town. Their pastries and tacos are great too! The family owned restaurant is a hole in the wall walk to the beach that makes you feel at home. My only gripe is that they are pricey compared to my other local favorite Mexican spot Jaliscos.

Great place for take-​out! Hubby & I came here right before a movie. The service is quick & friendly. I ordered the two chile rellenos & hubby got the two enchiladas. Bother were yummy & reasonably priced. Chile rellenos were homemade & made my «top three» for flavor & texture! I am a chile relleno snob, too, so you know these were delish! Hubby also got a little pastry which he liked very much!
The place is super small inside & not that clean, but food was worth coming back for. I happened to be there when there was a SUPER annoying family was consuming all the extra space & getting in my personal bubble (Thanks for standing right next to me with your crotch in my face, dad, while you sent your 50 kids to the bathroom!). Hence, we ordered our food to go. I just had to vent…
I can’t wait to come back again next time I want decent Mexi food to go!

This place is like that wonderful secret spot you can’t help but want to share with the world. I’m super picky but the food here has never disappointed me and it is the ONLY place I will order a Burrito as is without changing anything. As for the bakery items, they make everything in house and take cake orders. And the cakes, are to DIE for.
Try it out. it’s amazing.

Totally baffled by the high rating of this place…
If you have ever had Mexican food in your life from anywhere decent in the Bay Area, you will not be satisfied. Food was big and well priced. Taste was below average, service was average to non-​existent, salsa bar was not a bar at all. It is two salsas and some radishes and limes.
I left full. But I wouldn’t come back. The horchata was, however, the best I’ve ever had. So there’s that.
