Koda Farms

As a third generation Japanese American or «Sansei», I grew up eating steaming hot white rice with every dinner meal. My Nisei father considered it the best white rice in the world. In the ‘90s when the Japanese Rice Trade Policy was in the news, he took several bags of California grown Koda Farms Kokuho Rose white rice to Japan so that he can do the «taste test» against the premium Japan grown white rice with his Japanese colleagues and friends. I understand that the Kokuho Rose Koda Farms premium medium grain rice was the clear winner.

This rice is harvested in the fall, once a year so that’s the best time to buy it. You can buy this rice by the sack at their farm in Dos Palos or from Japanese grocery stores in the Bay Area and in selected stores in Arizona, California, Hawaii, Illinois, New York, Oregon and Washington. A note that you will find Kokuho Rose rice in similar packaging, «Koda Farms Kokuho Rose» and «Nomura and Co. Kokuho Rose». Nomura and Co. is their broker so make sure you see the words Koda Farms on the bag. I once found a Japanese sushi restaurant in Florida with a small grocery store. I spotted the large sacks of Koda Farms white rice on the floor and asked if I could buy a sack. The chef/​owner agreed to sell it to me but the Japanese clerk tried to sell me the non-​Koda Farms Kokuho Rose bag and argued with me that there wasn’t a difference. The clerk reluctantly sold it to me and I never went back to the store.
