BARRETTA Gardens Inn, is an elegantly restored 1904 Victorian farmhouse. The house is fully central air-​conditioned with a few Jacuzzi tubs, soaking tubs, rain-​fall showers and some fire stoves. Some are suites with private entrances that can be combined for larger families. Well known for its beautiful gardens with many sitting areas to enjoy in the warm summer nights. We provide early am coffee/​tea service to your room and a full sit-​down breakfast in the dining room or outdoor porch in the summer time. We cater to special dietary needs and can provide one ADA compliant room. See our chickens and vegetable garden or practice dancing on our outdoor dance floor.

Only a short 10 minute walk to downtown Sonora with its shops and restaurants, it’s ideally suited for romantic getaways, family reunions, and elopements. A short 2.5 hour drive from San Francisco, 1.5 hours from Sacramento makes this Gold Country bed and breakfast perfect for weekend escapes.

History

Established in 1904.

Barretta Gardens Inn was originally built in 1904. The house was built by a contractor from Chicago, Kleinecke, whose nephew was the Superintendent of Standard Lumber Company. He bought the land from the lumber company and built his house above the lumber yard. He also built the local high school. He had a horse and buggy accident and contracted blood poisoning and died in his early fifties. The house was sold to an Eric and Pearl Segerstrom, of Swedish origin, who raised their family here for 50 years. Both owners are buried at the Masonic Cemetery not far away from the house. Third or fouth owner turned it into a lodging establishment and it has now been a Bed and Breakfast Inn for over 27 years.

We welcome you to Sonora and Barretta Gardens Inn. We are Swedish (Astrid) and American (Daniel) and have lived in Sweden, Australia, and in California. We chose Sonora as our home because every time we visited from the Bay Area, we found something new and exciting to do, from wine tasting, golfing, antique hunting, frog jumping, music festivals, gold panning, swimming, skiing, fishing or hiking in Yosemite National Park. We know you will enjoy the gold country as much as we do. And we are sure that our guests from Europe and those from the United States will enjoy the opportunity to meet one another and share experiences.

We look forward to your visit and will welcome you in Swedish, German, French, Italian or in English.

Absolutely loved staying here! Such a beautiful Victorian home with stunning garden areas. What a perfect place for a small intimate wedding! Check in was a breeze, and there was a cozy fire, oatmeal cookies, coffee and tea to greet us. Astrid and Daniel were so helpful in sharing about the best restaurants, cocktails, and sights to see.
We stayed in the Barbara room. There was plenty of space to get comfy. And the bed! It was so comfortable! We had two wonderful nights sleep. Although the inn had other guests, it was so quiet and private. Not like some B&B’s where you can hear other guests. It was so nice to have a spacious bathroom with a tub and shower.
Every morning at 8, there was fresh coffee and tea waiting for us. Breakfast was served at 9, and oh my god, that breakfast! Starting with the fresh fruit (which my boyfriend is still talking about two weeks later) the perfectly poached eggs, and the best omelette I have ever had. Everything was lightly, but perfectly, seasoned. I’ve stayed at many B&B’s and Baretta Gardens Inn served some of the best breakfast of them all. Astrid and Daniel are so friendly, you feel so welcome and like family with the other guests at the breakfast table.
Every detail was just lovely! Thank you Astrid and Daniel for such a friendly stay. We will definitely stay there again and highly recommend staying here to anyone without hesitation.

My husband enjoyed staying at Barretta Gardens when we attended a wedding in Sonora on 2÷6÷16. Our room was the Merlot Room and it was lovely. The views from the balcony were striking, even during the winter, so they would be sensational during the rest of the year. The breakfast we enjoyed the next morning was delicious and the conversation with the other guests/​owner was a pleasant start to the day.

For a weekend getaway from the Bay area, my boyfriend and I stayed in the Tempranillo suite and found it to be very romantic, with the decorations and the whirlpool tub en suite bathroom. The thermostat in the room was stable and kept everything very comfortable, the bed was warm and there was everything from the typical toiletries to soft robes to lounge around in. It was a pleasant surprise to have it so clean compared to other B&Bs I have been to, as both my boyfriend and I are sensitive to dust and animal dander.
Checking in was seamless, and we were greeted with some tasty oatmeal raisins cookies and tea. Coffee, cups, cream, and sugar were set on the table outside our room early in the morning, which we took back into the room discretely after we woke up before getting dressed for 9am breakfast in the dining room. Breakfast was balanced and delicious, not your typical continental or rough American style fare.
Astrid is a lovely person to speak with, and has a lot of stories to share on really anything you can think of. She is attentive, kind, and accommodating with excellent recommendations on where to eat in the area. She has the living room stocked with brochures and pamphlets on activities in the area as well, should you ever need suggestions on those.
I would definitely make an effort to stay here again!

(This is Joe’s wife writing this review.) We happened upon the Barretta Gardens Inn the day before Thanksgiving and were so pleased we did! The property is completely lovely! There is a multi-​level fountain/​pond with koi fish, a beautifully manicured yard with lots of secret places to sit and enjoy nature. The Inn itself takes you back in time. It is peaceful and decorated beautifully with elegant antiques. There are quaint sitting rooms to partake of the tea and freshly-​baked cookies that are offered. And the bedrooms are private, comfortable, clean and have the extra touches one loves to find– chocolates, antique mirrors, lotions and tucked-​away games and books to peruse. The owners, Daniel and Astrid are very kind and really care about their guests. We woke to coffee and tea in the sitting room outside our suite, and following that, were invited down to a delicious and beautifully presented breakfast in the dining room. My husband has some food allergies and Astrid was very happy to adjust the menu to fit his needs. We truly enjoyed our stay and would definitely come for a return visit.

My husband and I were so pleased with our 3 night stay at the Barretta Gardens Inn Bed and Breakfast! We stayed in the Merlot Room and could not have been happier! The room is gorgeous! From the marble bathroom with that amazing shower, to the hardwood floors and antique furniture and that claw tub was incredible. The entire grounds are absolutely stunning! The hosts Astrid & Daniel were so welcoming and gracious! They were there for us for everything we needed. We had coffee delivered to our room by 8:00 am and then breakfast was served at 9:00 am each day.
Can we talk about breakfast? Oh my gosh… so delicious! First, fruit salad and fresh mango juice, then the unbelievable french toast, scrambled eggs like no other and delicious sausage! On the second day my husband wasn’t feeling well so Astrid delivered our breakfast to our room. She is really such a sweet lady! This time it was fresh guava juice and fruit salad followed by poached eggs over rice potatoes, sausage and the cutest cantaloupe boat topped with a sugared strawberry & blackberry!
After being out and about for the day, their kitty’s welcome you when you get back to the Inn. It just makes it feel like home! I can say without a doubt that we will be back.
I would recommend Barretta Gardens Inn Bed & Breakfast to anyone looking for an amazing place to stay in Sonora, Ca.

My wife & I stayed here for a week and absolutely loved Barretta Gardens Inn. Astrid is so warm & friendly, and her husband’s fresh ground coffee will knock your socks off (in a good way). My wife’s first view of our room was «Wow, this is beautiful!» The gardens, on the side of a steep hill, are spectacular. And Astrid’s breakfasts are quite hearty, with potatoes, fruit, eggs, sausage, and more coffee. The Inn is located close to Mono Way, one of the main roads in Sonora, so getting on the highway for day trips is very easy. We both enjoyed our stay immensely.

Go to this place is you have the appetite of a flea, they are very stingy on the food. And they have the temperature settings up high, if you have it set cool they will shut it off on you, then you will come back to a hot room. They are very cheap for the amount they charge, there is other bed and breakfasts for less that are not STINGY STINGY

My husband & I & 2-​week old stayed here for 3 nights on a gift certificate & had a wonderful experience! They upgraded our room to the master suite at no extra charge, gracefully accommodated our vegan/​vegetarian diet preferences on short notice, and took great care of us! Such a treat! Astrid and Danny are gifted in hospitality & so friendly. They have also done a beautiful job of the gardens & rock work on the property, making for a very restful atmosphere.

We just stayed at Barretta Gardens last night and couldn’t wait to write a review! Danny was absolutely lovely — we couldn’t have asked for a better host. Unfortunately Astrid was sick, so we’ll have to meet her next time!
Our room (the Syrah) was cozy and comfortable and it was such a treat to wake up to coffee and tea in the sitting room just outside our door. Danny had already set up a fruit bowl and refreshments for us when we arrived at breakfast and was so wonderful to chat with as he made the most delicious poached egg plate! The house was very clean and quiet, just like the perfect bed and breakfast should be. Our only regret is not spending more time there!

I stayed at the Barretta Gardens Inn recently with my two kids. I have to say I loved everything about this place. The room was amazing, the grounds were beautiful and Danny was a wonderful host. Astrid was out of town so we didn’t get to meet her but I am sure she is equally wonderful!
When we arrived there was tea and cookies waiting for us. When we woke up in the morning Danny offered us tea and coffee. Then we were treated to a delicious breakfast.
I am sad we were only here for one night but we will definitely being coming back again soon!

We stayed here one night on a tour through Gold Country. We checked in about 430, there is no front desk area so we had to peek around the corner to find the young gal that checked us in. She was pleasant, showed us our room (the Zin-​private bath down the hall). She asked about tea and coffee for the morning, and informed us we could opt for 8am beverages upstairs and downstairs breakfast was at 9am. The room was comfortable, and the bathroom nice. We had the whole upstairs to ourselves. The AC worked good (room controlled) considering it was 100 outside. There was ice tea for the evening with nuts and chocolates. THe next day we met the owner, Astrid, who cooks breakfast. Breakfast was simple but very tasty, eggs, sausage, fruit, potatoes. We did find out that morning that we could have requested an earlier breakfast time if we had needed but we enjoyed our tea and coffee upstairs at 8am.

We just spent two wonderful nights in the Merlot room. Very well annointed with marble throughout the bathroom, hardwood flooring, crown molding, antique furniture, with beautiful views of the terraced gardens. Beautiful flagstone walkways, cold dip stone pool, Jacuzzi, BBQ, I could go on and on. Oh, and I can’t forget our wonderful hosts Danny and Astrid! We’ll be back.

Just returned from a weekend at Barretta Gardens, in Sonora — what a treat! We loved our accommodations and the owners (Dan and Astrid) were lovely people. My family felt so comfortable at their home! The rooms are tastefully decorated and the grounds are picturesque. Danny has done an amazing job with all of the rock work around their home and Astrid has an incredible green thumb! The two of them have created something so special — it’s absolutely gorgeous. We enjoyed a delicious breakfast with fresh fruit and omelets prepared with veggies grown from their own garden. Astrid suggested Pinecrest Lake for the day, so we packed up the kids and went swimming! What a beautiful day we had! Dan and Astrid were so sweet to lend us some beach chairs and a beach blanket, for the day. I’m truly impressed with the hospitality we received at Barretta Gardens. This place is a rare find! We’ll definitely be back…

B&B done right!
A truly great experience, we are looking forward to going back. A beautiful house with a lovely garden; a very calm and relaxing atmosphere. Perfect for couples and families. Also, big plus if you like friendly cats (like we do!). But no problem if not — the cats remain outside at all times.
Astrid and Daniel were very accommodating and went out of their way to provide us a vegan breakfast, including locally sourced fruits. Highly recommended!

Barretta Gardens Inn is a wonderful place to stay either as a family or for a romantic get away. Astrid and Daniel are gracious and make you feel comfortable the moment you arrive. Astrid was very helpful with suggesting the right room for my family getaway. During our stay we were caught in the unexpected snow and Astrid called my cell to check where we were and if we needed any help getting back to the Inn. Luckily we had already arrived back to the Inn but were in for the night. Astrid invited us to help ourselves to anything in the kitchen for our dinner since we would not be going back out that night. Grounds were impeccable inside and out. Daniel was working on the backyard to enhance the beautiful grounds, you can tell they truly enjoy being hosts. We stayed in the Sangiovese Suite and it was perfect for us. All of the rooms are maintained well and are very charming. Close to Murphy’s and Columbia (Restored old town). If you need suggestions on what to do around town be sure to ask Astrid!

Barretta Gardens Inn is the loveliest, most pristine bed & breakfast we have had the pleasure to experience — the décor, culinary pleasures, extreme comfort, discreet decorative touches, and warm and affable hosts were above and beyond. I have stayed in inns around the world, and this is easily among the finest. An incredibly wonderful stay. We plan to return to Sonora, if only to stay at Barretta Gardens Inn.
If you are looking for privacy and comfort, the Merlot Room is heavenly with its two private patios, deep soaking tub, gorgeous four-​poster bed, and impeccable décor.

The wife and I stopped by for our honeymoon on the way to Yosemite.
Stayed in the cabernet sauvignon room. Astrid was very pleasant, the morning breakfast was really well prepared and the bed was so comfortable!

We first met Astrid when we called for avails and found her so welcoming, helpful and charming to suggest the great sites of the area to take in besides Yosemite park — prior to that conversation the only site on our itinerary.
We arrived to Sonora by way of Ebbetts Pass, winding down through crystal alpine lakes, faerytale meadows and boulders and forests that speak in quiet and ancient tongues. The pass opened upon amber grasses contrasted against lovely sagey-​colored trees and verdant yet rugged vineyards. It turns out the Victorian-​inspired Barretta Gardens is overseen with a care as golden as the hue of sepia-​colored days gone past and motherlodes once legendary for their bounty. Yet breakfasts are as simple, elegant and memorable as any contemporary B&B can boast. The proprietors Astrid and Daniel run an inn as refreshing as the Moroccan mint tea set out every afternoon to greet us from a hot day exploring Gold Country.
We found Barretta Gardens flexible and welcoming to our two boys as well. Our only suggestion is that if they choose to turn off each room’s A/​C while guests are away for the day that they would turn it back on in anticipation for their return in the evening. Baretta Gardens B&B is a rare treasure I hope more visitors to the area will mine for years more to come.
