Sweets n Stuff

My husband & I have been going to Duncan’s Mills to camp for years, every time we have been there this shop is never open… now I know why, it is so dirty, I am sure there is a rodent issue because of the filth and let’s not forget the abundantly clear hoarding that the owner has going on within the store. She has tons of boxes, candy and clear garbage piled high behind the very small counter she tries to do business from. I was kind of grossed out that she digs the candy out from boxes she keeps on the floor. This place would be so cute if it was torched and refurbished. I hope the health department goes in there for inspections as I am sure the mice and whatever else is lurking is tasting your candy before you do… just disgusting!!!

Why can’t I give this place a «No Star» rating? I blame myself really because I blatantly ignored all the warning sirens, flashing lights and internal voice that was screaming «Run Leslie Run! Save yourself! Look away!» No one else would have been sucked in. but I’d gone with friends and our kids and we were primed for some tasty goodness. If only I had heeded the uneasiness I felt when I noted that all the «bulk» candy had been double wrapped in clouding plastic bags and the gourmet chocolates in the display /​STORAGE (!!) case were also mumified by protective plastic. I quietly wispered to my girlfriend «I’m scared». But continue shopping we did. I stepped up and ordered some toffee from the clouds of plastic along with a coconut haystack; my achilles heel. To be safe, I added a sealed and boxed package of black licorice after ferverently searching for an expipration date unsuccessfully. «Candy doesn’t go bad does it?» I asked myself hopefully. While I waited for my friend to complete her purchase my eyes drifted to the «No Cash Refund» sign on the back wall. I’m sure the silently odd woman behind the murky display case meant to take it down. She would have been hindered however by the giant hoearded mass of crap measuring 4ft high, and a square 6ft x 6ft girth. We silently returned to our car each in our own cocoon of denial while spitting out our half chewed purchases onto the blacktop. Guess what? Candy does go bad. Very bad. Even when it is stored in a sealed box with no expiration date. When I finish this review I’m calling the health department.

Corlina owns this cute little walk down memory lane, although I think the place could use some re-​decorating, the store is about the candy! There are also cool toys and alot of old fashioned candies like the coconut haystacks, chick-​o-​sticks, Violet candies, Good n Plenties, even the chocolate Ice Cubes! There are also a huge variety of gummies and taffy, it truly is a FUN addition to this sweet little town of 85 population!!! I hear this coming weekend July 18 – 19 is Civil War Days and on Sunday the 19^th the Occidental Fire Department is holding their annual BBQ feed! This town is a must, and if you are having a sweet tooth, stop by and say hi to Corlina, you may get a sample or TWO!!!
