I had been meaning to write a glowing hosanna similar to Jessica H.‘s for a few weeks now. Shield has been my go-to gas station ever since I stopped driving by the Hess on Mass Ave. Unfortunately, I realized today that the gas here is not as cheap as I once thought. The prices advertised on the sign are self-serve prices only. Now, of course I usually expect a price bump for full serve, but the rub here is that there are no self-serve pumps. So, despite the self-serve price advertised prominently($ 1.93 today), only the inflated full-serve price($ 1.99) is available. Lest you fear boycott, let me qualify my criticism by saying that the price is still significantly cheaper than the Sunoco across the street, and the attendant(the same one I’ve had every time) is exceedingly nice. Also convenient: plastic is a-okay, something I’ve learned not to take for granted at small independent gas stations. And Jessica H. is right that there’s rarely a wait for a pump. So, will I keep Shield Service Station on my go-to list? Probably. Its prices certainly don’t cross over to «bad», and convenience is king, but I’ll feel a tiny pang of betrayal every time I look up to its gleaming yellow sign.

This is where I buy all of my gas! They always have the cheapest gas around. When all of the corporate places have their prices going up up up, Shield pretty much stays the same. I used to go to Pepe’s which is right down the street and has about the same prices as Shield, but Pepe’s get really busy and does not have enough pumps. Shield has like 8 pumps! You can’t beat it!
