I swing by New Delhi Market whenever I need something for an Indian recipe, but am feeling too lazy to make my way to a bigger store. They have a solid selection of essential Indian spices and groceries(split mung beans, basmati rice, mango pickle, etc.). The prices on the Indian foods are pretty reasonable, but as with most convenience stores, you’ll pay a bit extra for the usual American stuff. There’s an $ 8 minimum for cards, but with all the delicious munchies in stock, crossing that threshold isn’t a problem. I got the guy working the register for an Indian snack recommendation to get my $ 5.49 tahini purchase over the hump; he helpfully pointed me to a crack-tastic $ 3 Indian snack mix(Haldiram’s Khatta Meetha) that I will definitely be getting again. New Delhi Market, I like you. Four stars.

I love this place. Indian spices, chutneys, teas and etc. Plus all the the convenience candy and etc for those who aren’t there for the Indian stuff or lottery tickets. Conveniently located very near/practically next door, to Guru the Caterer. Our own little slice of excellent Indian food and foodstuffs right here in Teele Square!

This store doesn’t have a wide assortment of brands but they do carry everything that you’d expect in an Indian grocery store. It’s not every Indian grocery store that carries sandwich masala but they had it here. They had a decent amount of frozen foods and random things you’d need to pick up like rakhis. I agree with the previous review that the man behind the counter has an odd sense of humor but he’s pretty nice.

This is one of the few South Asian grocery stores in the area. It has the basics: most dry & powdered spices of the Swad brand, rice, pungent preblended spices, and a mixed bag of frozen foods. I had never seen Pillsbury brand frozen paranthas, but they’re real. The Doughboy even wears a turban instead of a chef’s hat… just kidding, but he really should :) I had to dig around, but I found some frozen ground coconut way at the bottom of the freezer. The produce here is pretty bad. The potatoes were all sprouted and the onions were on the verge of spoiling. I’ve never seen them carry fresh curry leaves, but they claim to have them once in while. I don’t know how often they change out the refrigerated naan, but check it for mold before you buy it. If they have any in the freezer I’d go for that first. In a pinch, I can get most things here, but I would rather go to Shalimar in Central for a more complete selection.

I used to get my Sunday paper form this place every… der…Sunday. And the young man behind the counter always made the same type of jokes every. single. time. ****SCENARIOONE**** Him: «Do you want a bag?» Me: «Yes.» Him: «We don’t have any! hahahahahaha» Me: «Yes. Ha ha.» Him: «I joke. So… uh…do you want a bag?» Me: «Erm. I’m afraid to say… yes?» Him: «We don’t have any! hahahahahaha» Me: … ****SCENARIOTWO**** Him: «We don’t have any money left in the register, so no change for you» Me: ??? Him: «I joke! hahahahahaha» Me: «Mmmm. Yes. Ha ha.» Him: … Me: *cough* I swear. He got me every time because I was too tired to realize he’s joking. He still is my favorite person to buy a paper from and if it wasn’t wildly inconvenient for me to get it there now, I would still go. The ladies at Store 24 just aren’t cutting it. And all the Indian food and clothing in the store makes me feel cooler and more cultured than getting it from the aforementioned ladies. Special note: they have samosas warming in the toaster oven. But if you try them, make sure you bring exact change and don’t need a bag unless you’re ready for zany jokes!
