Kickass Cupcakes

No way to run a business.
I was very excited to have kickass cupcakes making the cupcakes for my wedding this past Saturday. We had for years gotten cupcakes here (though less often more recently) and loved them. We ordered these cupcakes 2 months in advance paid $ 300 for them and then the unforgivable happened.
On the day of our wedding, the day we had scheduled with them to pick up our cupcakes: THEY WERE ON VACATION. There is no mention of this vacation on the voicemail message or on their website.
We received no warning that this would occur but had grown a bit concerned when they hadn’t answered their phones for two days beforehand when we were calling to confirm pickup times and all. Also, now their voicemail box is full so we can’t even leave a message to resolve this issue.
How does a business book $ 300 worth of cupcakes two months in advance and then utterly fail to deliver.
Now two days later, my now wife has called multiple times. No answer and voice mailbox is still full.
I never intend on having any of their cupcakes ever again.

Meh meh meh. Expensive and SMALL cupcakes that I find hard to imagine kicking any ass.
As much as I love supporting local businesses, their cupcake is much too weak for me. The flavors while inspired don’t deliver and the only thing that comes through is sugar. I would pay $ 1.50 for one of this, but $ 3+ is laughable.

I love going to Kickass Cupcakes even though they are not my top-​rated cupcake purveyor in Boston. The staff are always really friendly and they have some very unusual cupcakes. I used to make a point of visiting on the last Friday (I think?) of the month when they would serve a few free alcoholic cupcakes and frosting shots. So good!
I’m taking off a star because the cupcake flavors are not consistently good. For the vanilla with chocolate frosting, they’re pretty stellar, but when they put flavor bulbs (not sure what else to call them) in the middle of the cake the result is often overwhelming. I had a guinness cupcake a few years back that was so bad I didn’t even finish it. And me not finishing a cupcake is really saying something. I don’t think they’ve quite perfected the art of balancing the elements of their cupcakes the way Sweet has. However, I love the way they take risks with their flavors and are always expanding their offerings. They’re much better than someplace like Crumbs or a generic bakery cupcake. Just not quite at the top of the heap.

It was my fiancé’s birthday. I was in need of something small to sing «Happy Birthday» around, that wouldn’t result in us having tons of leftover cake… because what happens then: «Breakfast Cake»… for the next 5 mornings! Not necessarily a bad thing, but with summer nearly upon us, I decided to go with cupcakes.
I stopped in at Kickass after work. They seemed to have a good deal still available, but not EVERYTHING. Which I get, it was towards the end of a day. I grabbed this double chocolate brownie looking cuppy-​cake, funfetti (because, funfetti), and a traditional chocolate on vanilla. They had several others, including a Green Monster one and one that was for dogs! (good to know).
At $ 3.00 a shot, they better be good cup cakes– and they were, just not as spectacular as I would have hoped. I just left feeling that I should have done something different. They only have discounts when you get a dozen.
The cake was moist, and the frosting was just the right amount… bordering on too much, but I’d rather be on that border than the other? Am I right? Not overly sweet, and not too savory.
The shop is smaller than their other locations in the city, but you arent going to be hanging around eating cupcakes all day are you? OR ARE YOU?

Alot of people here complain about the pricing and I suppose I have to agree merely because these cupcakes are way smaller than what you normally think of when you think cupcake. But from the way other people talk it sounds like they are complaining about paying $ 3 for a cupcake as if that is a lot. But I wish I knew where people were going to get cheaper and better cupcakes, because where I am from in CT most places like this are more expensive (usually like 50% more cupcake for like 50 – 75 cents more)

If the only problem, was the size I probably wouldn’t bother writing a review (I do eat a lot of cupcakes), but the problems do not stop there. The taste on all of them are just not very good, the cake itself is dry and all of the flavors are just let downs. If you order a «Raspberry Chocolate» cupcake I expect the cake to taste like Raspberry and Chocolate, not for the cake to be Chocolate and a tiny dollup of Raspberry Jam in the center to give it the Raspberry flavor. Another cupcake we had was «Key Lime,» but seriously it didn’t taste anything like Limes. Basically every cupcake we tried had mediocre cake flavoring and was very dry. I will say their icing is quiet good though.

I have eaten MANY kickass cupcakes. I lived in Somerville when they first opened up shop 4 or 5 years ago. They got me through when I learned I had celiac and couldn’t eat gluten. After my diagnosis, many a friend brought a Kickass Cupcake to commiserate with my new change of diet. I remember them as being pretty good…
I’ve been back to Somerville twice in the past year and visited Kickass when I was there both times. And either my memory was wrong or something has changed. I was sorely disappointed with my cupcake both times.
The first time I was there, I got a Gluten Free Mojito cupcake and the cake was super bitter. I figured there must have been a mistake with the batter and brought it to the staff’s attention. They replaced it with yellow cake/​chocolate frosting gluten free cupcake which was fine. (Not worth $ 4, even if it is GF!) My next time at Kickass, I got a mojito again, and it was exactly the same! Unbelievably bitter!
Perhaps their other, glutenous cupcakes are worth $ 4 — with their exciting flavors and toppings… But the only exciting gluten free cupcake is the Mojito. With that now off the table, I don’t see much point in returning.

These cupcakes are waaaaay too sweet and overpriced. $ 4 for a cupcake, really?
The mojito cupcake here could have easily got me a DUI. That thing must have had a double shot in it… anyhow, hat wasn’t a complaint, it was the reason I gave 3 and not 2 stars :-)

As a reviewer, Kickass Cupcakes leaves me in a little bit of a predicament: a 5-​star cupcake living in a 2-​star world. So, where should I start– would you like the good news first or the bad? I’ll leave it up to you:
[For the GOOD NEWS, start here: the Caramel Mochiatto cupcake]
It’s a moist chocolate cupcake filled with a gooey caramel center and topped with a mocha frosting with the perfect balance of dark chocolate and coffee flavors to balance the sweetness. It is, thus far, my favorite cupcake in Boston and has on more than one occasion been given (and received!) as an unquestionable expression of love and support. I can almost gladly spend $ 3 on it.

Red Velvet — The cake itself is on the drier side but redemption is found in their cream cheese frosting. So it’s not exactly bad news, just mediocre cake with a great frosting– it’s a-​okay. (Saturday Flavor of the Day)
Cookie Dough — Standard vanilla cake and frosting with a yummy ball of cookie dough inside. Again, not exactly bad news but the cookie dough is the best part, so I’d advise you to save your $ 3 and use it to buy a pack of cookie dough at Shaw’s instead.
S’mores — A cupcake inspired by the beloved s’more should have so much potential, but alas, I tried this awkwardly balanced creation once and I most assuredly do not want s’more. (Friday Flavor of the Day)
Super Chocolate — There’s nothing super about this mediocre chocolate cupcake. Again, it’s quite dry (are you sensing a trend here?) and if you’ve got a hankering for chocolate, refer to the good news section and get the Mochiatto– now that is some super chocolate-​y goodness.
And finally, each little cupcake costs a whopping $ 3.

I want to kick my own booty for trying these cupcakes more than once. The business name is cool, and I like that the cupcakes aren’t the ginormous, mammoth concoctions that other places sell. Those are the only pleasant things I have to say. Unfortunately, these cupcakes are dry, and the frosting does not taste too wonderful.

For $ 3 a pop, I was expecting more. Catchy name, which is what made me stop. I had the funfetti cupcake. I personally think my funfetti cupcakes are way better … maybe when I get back home to SC I can sell my funfetti cupcakes for $ 3 each.
They do not accept a card for less than $ 9, it is cash only.
I have no problem paying for something is it is worth the calories and money but in this case … not so much.

The creator of the sommerville sensation showed me this place. We got a combo of six to share– may have been a little a motions for our waistlines. But the green monster and the mojoto was delicious.
So much goodness to drool over. Come with a sugar low so you can recharge with these desserts!

More like SUCKASS CUPCAKES! My vegan ginger peach Bellini was bland and dry and missing its signature raspberry. Really not a fan of ginger and wish they had more vegan/​GF options. Not much of a variety here. Would never go without my 50% off with Foursquare coupon. So not worth $ 3

I’ve never paid full price for a cupcake from Kickass Cupcakes. And I’ve eaten (and thoroughly enjoyed!) them on numerous occasions. I find this pretty impressive.
I was introduced to KAC when my company hosted an event with free food trucks. The Kickass Cupcakes truck was there handing out cupcakes to the employees for free! This is what dreams are made of! I opted for their Cinnamon Chai Pecan Sticky, and it was absolutely delicious. I’m a huge fan of chai tea and fall flavors, and this cupcake was executed extremely well.
I was intrigued, so a few weeks later my roommates and I visited the shop close to Davis Square. As we were looking at the offerings in the case, I checked in on FourSquare, and a deal popped up! 50% off your purchase! I chose the Boston Cream Pie cupcake, as I’m always partial to filled cupcakes. Although not as good as the real thing (I could die happy with a Boston Cream Pie from Legal), I definitely preferred this cupcake version to the Dunkin Donuts Boston cream donut.
My roommates also got me some for my birthday. So more free cupcakes. My only suggestion would be that they offer more options with fillings. It’s like a little surprise!
KAC also hosts mini cupcake cocktail happy hours the last Monday of every month during which they have 3 different mini cupcakes out for sampling. Absolutely free! They have sheets which detail the boozy ingredients, and they are always creative and delicious. We’ve tried many including Guinness, Bailey’s, Mint Julep, and Limoncello. The staff is always very welcoming during these events, it’s not too crowded, and we haven’t felt pressured to leave quickly or buy anything, which is much appreciated.
Kickass is a great, local company! I always get so happy when I see the truck or a new cupcake photo on their Facebook. Definitely check out the happy hours and support them!

I’m baffled that Kickass Cupcakes has such a low overall rating. If we’re talkin’ size, yes, they’re teeny. And I can see how that’s offensive at $ 3 a pop. However, from the single flavor I tried, I’m gonna call it – they excel at executing creative flavor combos! May be a premature assessment, but it’s what I have for now, folks.
My shirley temple cupcake was delightful! Lemon cake drizzled with cherry syrup, sugary lime icing, topped with a maraschino cherry. Thankfully not overwhelmingly citrusy, given the two strong components. Cake was moist, I assume thanks to cherry syrup. I’d definitely get this again, but not until I try their Mojito flavor.

Well… their website is Kickass. Not only do they give you their address but they give great directions for both public transportation as well for driving. We took the T to get there and the website gave very detailed directions on how to get there after you get off the train!
With such a promising start, then the cupcakes should live up to their name, right? Wrong!
We went on a Saturday night. The shop itself is clean but very drab and even a bit depressing. However, the people working there were friendly and helpful. We decided to get a half dozen, figuring we would eat some the same evening and refrigerate the rest to have the next evening.
Our order consisted of 2 Lucky cupcakes, 1 funfetti, 1 vanilla, 1 red velvet and 1 chocolate. They were all attractively decorated and certainly looked good. However, looks can be deceiving, as we were soon to discover.
Back at the hotel, my husband had a Lucky cupcake. This cupcake consists of lemon cake with white chocolate buttercream frosting and candied ginger on top. Before being boxed, a fortune, like one found in a fortune cookie, is put on top. He said that his cupcake had virtually no flavor.
I tried the red velvet, which as it turned out, was the Saturday flavor of the day. My cupcake was also flavorless. The cake didn’t even have a hint of cocoa and the frosting was nothing to write home about.
Our daughter tried the funfetti and echoed that hers had no flavor. In addition, we all agreed that the cake part of our cupcakes was dense and dry. After finishing her cupcake, our daughter said that she didn’t even want to eat other one the next day. Still, I did refrigerate the remaining 3.
The next day, she reconsidered and said that she wanted to try the chocolate one. So, we all had our cupcakes. Here’s the interesting thing —weirdly enough, overnight refrigeration actually helped improve the flavoring! While they were still dense and dry, they appeared to have a bit more flavor!
On paper, these cupcakes sound so promising. Their website tells you that they are «artisanal bakers» and «bake from scratch everyday in small batches». They «use only the best all natural ingredients» — no hydrogenated oils, no trans fats, no artificial flavors or preservatives. Further, they add this: «We think that butter is the yellow brick road to happiness» and that they never use shortening.
With such a description, one would expect superb cupcakes. Sadly, they are far from it. IMO, it’s not worth a trip to Somerville for these cupcakes.

Kickass cupcakes — I don’t really understand you! I’ve been here in person a few times and I was never really that impressed. The cupcakes were kind of small, they seemed a little dry, and for how inventive they all sounded like their green monstah cupcake they were just nothing that Kickass…
Then you have your fun food truck that came to Tufts for grad student appreciation week, and not only did I love getting a cupcake for free, I actually appreciated your cupcakes then! Coincidence??? But really, that food truck had a ton of cupcake variety including vegan and gluten free ones for those of you out there wondering, and the chocolate espresso one I got really was quite tasty! So maybe you are more kick ass out on the road? Or you make your cupcakes better for special events?
They obviously don’t have the best reviews on Unilocal,and I have to say that up until this kickass food truck experience, I also did not think that they were kickass at all. But now, I guess they’ve earned an average three star review. So find their truck!

I agree with all the other mediocre reviews here… but I have soo many other things to say…
I was sooo anxious to go here, I was planning to have Cupcakes for my Sons Bday so I had been scoping out all the local cupcake joints. Saw the pictures, have been hearing all the rage of KickAss for months so decided to give them a try…
Walking in was a little of a let down, the place is dinky… No table or stools to even sit for a taste.
The girls were nice enough but not overly accomodating or didnt go out of their way to make me not feel like I was nagging by asking all my questions… I wanted 48 Cupcakes & I was told I still had to pay $ 3 each… Tip to Kickass: if someone is offering to buy that many you should have been willing to make a deal with me…
So because of that I was immediately put off…
So I bought some to try just because I was there, I made up in my mind that I wasnt going to order, but that was another thing I told you I might have just wanted to purchase 48 cupcakes but you didnt offer to let me try some… I had to pay for all 6 I purchased…
They are soooo small, for a place that has been all the rage, I cant believe these little things are what everything has been raving about… They are actually good, the weird little names & concoctions, but I cant see paying that much per for the size…
So all in all if you are in the area try 1… But not worth going out of your way for.

A misnomer if I ever did hear one! Someone lied to them about the kickassery of their cupcakes because kickass they are not!
I ordered the red velvet cupcake from their food truck and got confused when I took a bite. It was neither red nor did it taste like red velvet. It was clay/​mud colored and tasted a little carrot cake-​y. At the very least they got the frosting right, because that part was pretty good which in turn saved the cupcake. Otherwise I would have returned to kickass and kicked someone in the ass lol.

I gave this place another shot when Scoutmob had a 50% off special. The lady at the counter still almost overcharged me, but we settled things at the end.
The cupcakes here are smaller than other places and the prices are a tad bit pricey ($ 3 and above). So I expected good quality, because the quantity is lacking, right? Well, even the quality was suspect. Overall, a lot of the cupcakes I got… weren’t even and neat. The cakes were tilted to varying degrees, which is definitely sloppy and careless baking. The frosting on top isn’t exactly the greatest in terms of aesthetics either.
The cookie dough flavor was unremarkable. I hardly remember the taste. The mojito wasn’t too bad and the rum flavor is definitely present. The mochiatto wasn’t all that, as it just tasted like a regular chocolate cupcake.
The regular chocolate and vanilla cupcakes were also meh. It was a good effort putting candy on top of those to try provide some creativity, but in the end, it’s just not that special. Of all the flavors I had, I enjoyed the Lucky cupcake the most. I liked the lemon cake, buttercream frosting, and candied ginger combination. The fortune on top was a little tacky though.
You can be different in a good way, but also different in a bad way. Kickass tries to show their rebellious streak by boasting their unpopularity on Unilocal.But there’s a reason why it’s unpopular: because this isn’t even close to being kickass…
