Solitude Mountain Resort

Huge shout out to Roundhouse Lodge — mid-​mountain restaurant… the best mid-​mountain food EVER! Skied all mountains recently — if you are at Solitude — you must eat here! Their Shepard Pie was out of this world!!! Make this a must do!!!

Solitude is like Brighton’s older cooler sister that drives a convertible and dates the school jock.
Solitude is updated in its interior décor, bar, maps, and chair lifts. Their most beginner lift, «easy street» is very straight forward. It is fairly wide for those who are learning and it’s not too steep. The rest of the lifts can be very steep in certain areas but also has areas where the slope flattens out.
I like Solitude because the trails interconnect more than Brighton. You can take one chair lift, navigate down the trails and end up at the other side of the resort. Also, at the chair lift exits they have benches to lean/​sit on which helps to get you strapped in.
The lodge at Solitude was perfect. A stone wrapped fireplace and reasonably priced food (see previous review of Brighton) made it welcoming to me as I came off the slope a little sore. I read my kindle near the fire and had a beer. Life was great! Oh, and free wifi!
The only drawback of solitude was their archaic locker system. You place 6 quarters in, lock your belongings and unless you have six more quarters, your things are in there until you’re ready to leave. Kind of a pain, and pretty annoying seeing that their facilities are new and updated. There is a change machine conveniently located near the elevator, so we were able to get more quarters but it seems silly to have to pay every time you need to get your things and lock it again.
Overall I enjoyed Solitude… I will definitely recommend it to friends traveling to Salt Lake City!

Absolutely love this place! I visited with my wife and 9 year old son the first week of February. We stayed at the very nice Inn at Solitude and the freindly staff was helpful/​attentive. Our room on the fourth floor had large vaulted ceilings, a small fridge, plenty of hot water, a nice 37 inch flatscreen TV, two plush bathrobes (for getting to the hotubs, I presume) and very comfy beds. There are complimentary ski lockers in the lower lobby as this is truly a ski in-​ski out hotel. The village has a few dining options (pizza, upscale, bar food) and you can rent skis/​boots and buy tickets in the village rather than at the main entrance (lines are much shorter).
As for the ski resort itself, it was outstanding. The lifts all worked well and got you up the mountain rather quickly. Although there are not many green runs, there are lots of wide open and not too steep runs near the bottom that are great for beginners/​kids. There are a decent number of challenging blues and blacks as you get higher up. The snow was perfect on our weekend and our son loved the ski school (it was highly recommended). We ate each day at the Moonbeam main lodge complete with a roaring fireplace and moutain views. Very good burgers and salads, hot chocolate and coffe, etc. A little pricey but hey, it’s a resort. Seating is somewhat limited on busy days but there is an outdoor patio. Lockers are available for only .75 cents. There is a nice gift shop and a bar next to it. Rental is also in the main lodge — great folks. As others have noted, this place was not crowded at all (busiest day was Saturday and it then tailed off thru our last day of skiing on Monday). The traffic down the canyon road on Saturday after Solitude closed looked a bit hairy — you may want to do the park and ride if you can. Overall, this is a great place for families and beginning to intermediate skiers.

Can’t beat fresh POW, should have brought my snorkel.

We came for a few days in mid December to find excellent snow cover and a constant resupply due to frequent snow showers. We are east coast novice skiers, so we defer to other reviews for the more advanced ski opinions, but for us, it was excellent! Not crowded at all! There was a lengthy but easy beginner slope that we found excellent for toning up our few skills and doable «easy» slopes, that we found quite challenging. No ski snobbery and the staff on the lifts and around the slopes were, like everyone at the resort, extremely friendly, warm, helpful and «on the ball». We always thought that Disney World had the best trained staff for friendliness and helpfulness, but Solitude has Disney beat. Everywhere you go, in the ski shop, restaurants, front desk at the hotel or condo check-​in desk, the staff are incredibly on the ball and bend over backwards to help you out and answer any question, no matter how mundane. The food was OK to good… not a foodie heaven, but it was widely available and varied. We especially enjoyed the «Mountain Food”(Indian) available up the slope at the round house. We did not try it, but heard that the trek up the mountain at night to a catered meal at the «Yert» is a great experience and we will do that when we come back, and we will come back. The rooms at the Inn were spacious and nicely appointed and the service staff was as skilled and friendly as everyone else here. There is a upscale restaurant in the Inn, a casual bar, a pizza joint and nice snack and lunch restaurants out on the slopes. We rented our equipment, all brand new! And the staff at the rental facility was helpful and very knowledgable, something us newbies appreciate.

Did Disc Golf today as part of our family reunion. We did the short course after
riding up the lift. We generally enjoyed the challenge of the course and terrain but found the course map inaccurate and very confusing with little to no markings to keep you on track causing us play the wrong hole and have to hike back out. Also felt the lift ticket at $ 10 but $ 21 for two discs (discounted by $ 10 for returning them) makes this a pretty expensive family activity compared to other alternatives. The views and mountains were beautiful though.

We stayed during the summer months in a condo at Solitude. The condo was just what I hoped it would be: spacious, clean, fresh and included a balcony and full kitchen. It was also less touristy than the Park City options. The resort has some great hikes on the property and riding the chairlift was cheaper than some of the competitor mountain resorts.
However, I found the majority of staff during the summer to be bored and inattentive. We tried to ask the staff member in reception a question about the chairlift and she kept turning around and talking to people behind her halfway through my sentence, which I thought was so unprofessional and rude. The lady who was working in the little shop was so much nicer and pointed out places we could go on a map. Another thing to note is that we didn’t come across any staff that had actually done any of the hikes, or knew anything about them. As hiking is a key summer activity there it would be good if the front office staff at least knew the basics of these trails. Perhaps the staff are better in the peak winter season. I found the resort a relaxing place to stay otherwise.

This is easily the #2 disc golf course in Utah (but still behind Base Camp a few steps). We came up here on a Saturday around 10 with myself, my father, and my two brothers, ready to try out an exciting course.
The lift is $ 10 per person and runs Friday, Saturday and Sunday, or if you have two cars you can easily hike in from Brighton. It’s a slow lift, but you do have some great views on the way up. We actually talked to a group at the bottom when we first arrived that were planning on doing the two car hike thing, and they beat us to the top.
There was a moderate sized crowd, but it wasn’t a problem. We had to wait about 10 minutes or so because there were 2 or 3 groups in front of us when we started. The first group was painfully slow, it must have been their first time playing as they were throwing wildly and not very far. While this isn’t a problem, if you are new to the sport and slow, PLEASE let other groups play through you.
You will likely lose a disc or two per group here. We got very lucky and managed to keep all of ours, but there were quite a few times where we all had to stop and search for someones disc. Again, if you are going to be searching for a while and a group is waiting behind you, let them play through. I’d also recommend a spotter for holes that have a higher potential of losing discs. There are a lot of trees here to lose your disc in, so keep an eye on the direction it’s heading.
It took us around 3 hours to go from the lift to finishing the round. There are a lot of great throws here, and a lot of unique ones. ¹⁶⁄₁₈ of the holes are downhill, which is pretty unique compared to other courses. It was an interesting challenge to try and figure out where your disc would land based on the drop. The 2 uphill holes were challenging as well. All the holes were a lot of fun, and I look forward to improving my score down the road!
You can order food from the pizza place at hole 18 on your way down… we were disappointed in the time it took them to get it to us though. We could have driven out of the canyon and ate better food faster than it took them to get our order made.

Fantastic place to ski, best snow ever, not a party place.

What’s not to love? Full day and night skiing with a variety of terrain at fair prices. A locals mountain with a professional feel and one that I make sure I visit year after year when I’m in town for my annual ski trip.

Great day weather wise to be out here, a bit too warm so the snow is heavy and rides a bit slow. The staff is super friendly and approachable, great customer service guys! Kudos to management for having a great time, realizing this job is not easy and low pay.
This is my 5^th time coming from Miami, so I’ll continue to visit. Great place!

Solitude is the name to perfectly describe this winter playground. My beginner friends were challenged by your steeper green runs, but the powder which fell all day was truly «champagne powder” – the lightest, driest, fluffiest powder on earth that Utah is famous for. I spent half the day blissfully playing in Honeycomb Canyon with nary another person in sight. See you next year.

An low key beautiful ski resort. Rarely crowded during the week. It’s a nice alternative to Park City or Alta/​Snowboard. Good value, with day pass of $ 70+. Some may complain about lack of covered chairs or a gondola, but the terrain is great. Parking is a snap too. Lodges offer the normal dining fare, but cheaper than the larger facilities.

This was my first visit to SLC. We snowboarded Snowbird and Solitude and really loved Solitude. There are a large variety of blue runs that are easily accessed and can keep you busy all day. Also this mountain was much less crowded so few lines. There were a mix of faster/​slower lifts but without lines there still wasn’t much downtime.
Lift tickets were a little pricey but comparable to all the other mountains, we should have booked ahead as you can get a considerable discount.
The mountains in SLC seem to have shuttles and parking figured out! The whole system was easy and the shuttles run so often it was convenient to get to and from the car.
We went in the early season so I can’t say much about the snow. I would LOVE to get back here and play after a dump of powder. We still really enjoyed the day.

This is my favorite SLC area ski resort. The terrain is perfect for an intermediate to advanced level skiier, with a lot of steep terrain that isn’t too cut up with moguls. The resort is just right in size, so you don’t spend all of your time trekking around narrow catwalks, but there is enough area to explore. Finally, there aren’t too many people. It pretty much lives up to its name in that regard. You can find untracked snow well into the afternoon.
My pro-​tip is to try Challenger, which is supposedly the steepest groomed run in Utah. I can’t prove that, but it’s pretty f-​ing steep.

After not snowboarding for over 7 years, I decided to get back into it at Solitude since I heard that there isn’t much of a crowd here. And boy were they right! I didn’t run into anyone during my day on the slopes (Sunday).

— Fast ski lifts (if you take the express ones)
— Not too busy
— Great for practicing beginners
— Have a beginners pass for cheaper
— One of the closest resorts
Con’s:
— Pricey lift tickets
— Pricey food ($ 5 for fries???)

Definitely lives up to its name; Solitude was not overcrowded and made snowboarding very enjoyable. Iv’e been snowboarding only a handful of times, their greens and blues here are slightly more challenging then other resorts I have been to but overall was really nice. Ample parking and free, snowboarders welcomed, rental gear was all recent and in great condition, and a fairly decent dining area. My only complaint though was at the time there was only one main person working the rental area and it took over half an hour to get our gear and pay. It looks like typically there are up to three people but for whatever reason there was only one and the line was moving extremely slow.

I. LOVE. THIS. MOUNTAIN. A great place to start a ski trip if you need some time to reacclimate yourself to the slopes. There are so few people on the mountain, it is absolutely wonderful. You don’t have to worry about lines for the lifts, or crazies running you down while you are on the mountain. And if you are trying to get better at skiing by giving a black diamond or two a run, then this is a great place to get your feet wet.
Free + easy parking at the bottom of the slope and plentiful rest stops on the mountain. The most daunting part of the mountain is the one lane altitudinal climb to get there. very windy, steep cliffs… you’ll 100% need a 4X4.

Very nice resort! Uncrowded, beautiful and awesome. The staff is helpful but not overbearing. The room was perfectly clean and quite a bit larger than a typical hotel room. Great view from the balcony.
We would love to visit again.

Solitude is a great place to go skiing or boarding!
It’s not usually as crowded as Brighton or Snowbird. It’s not snobby about snowboarders like Alta and Deer Valley. It’s a good resort for locals, but it doesn’t have the «locals only» attitude. You can find good discount deals for Solitude if you look around a bit.

A bit isolated up in the mountains, 30mins East of SLC. Pretty close to some of the other SLC resorts (Brighton, Alta)
Low-​Average price ($ 72). We got ours for $ 61 at a ski shop on the way up. Worth it.
Size, Runs, Terrain:
Relatively small resort (1200 acres); we rode almost the entire mountain in a short day. The name fits it well in that it feels somewhat secluded. 2,047 ft vert and 64 runs. Although there were many families here, the beginner runs are limited and fairly crowded. There are many good blues and blacks on the mountain with long, smooth runs. The smoothness comes in really handy on some of the faster groomed runs, especially when the shadows are cast over the runs (which is much of the day… riding over rough terrain w/​low light conditions is terrifying). There is a good amount of textured (read: mogul) areas here, but they are often immediately adjacent to groomed runs. If there’s a mixed group, it’s really easy to choose your individual preferences.
Lifts
Fewer than average (8). Feel a little outdated with mostly fixed-​chairs, but adequate capacity to avoid lines. Most of the lift distances are relatively short, so the fixed chairs wasn’t much of a problem.
Snow & Weather/​conditions
500″ annually. It hadn’t snowed in the 2 weeks or so prior to our trip, but the skiable terrain was still decent. A couple icy/​hard-​pack areas on the groomed runs, but we still managed to find some semi-​fresh powder off to the side of the resort (in the trees). It’s great to find a resort that has good terrain even in off-​weather days.
People density
A small resort, but with few people. Only the beginner lift had any lines at all, everything else was ski straight up to the gate. Parking is in a single lot in front of the main lodge, a very short distance from everything.
Favorite Run (s)
Challenger (Black) –we were trying to set our downhill speed records here. Lots of good stuff and somewhat varied terrain. Liberty (Blue). Sol/​Bright (Blue) had the tree powder.
Overall
Every resort has it’s own feel and personality. I think my friend described it best when he said «it’s a mellow little resort with just the right amount of aggro». Solitude’s name fits it well in that it’s a good distance out of the way and definitely not a popular resort. There aren’t a ton of people here and it feels very laid back. At the same time, there is good terrain and features to keep you interested and on your toes. The moguls here add to the challenge (but are easily avoidable), and some of the runs are hard and fast. I would probably not fly out here to ride this resort by itself, but it makes a great addition or substitution for a single day on a multi-​day trip.
